Support Information

Docking stations which use DisplayLink technology require software installed on the computer connected to them to function correctly.

Always ensure you have installed the latest DisplayLink software for your machine from the DisplayLink website at: https://www.displaylink.com/downloads

In addition to installing the DisplayLink software, MacOS Version 11 requires permissions being granted to the software for it to work correctly. These permissions allow the to send video to the docking station to display on external monitors and do not pose any form of security risk.

The following is the process to correctly install and configure the DisplayLink software on this version of MacOS. The steps required are as follows (clicking on an item will jump to the relevant section):

 Installing the DisplayLink Software

 Configuring the DisplayLink Software for Use

 Allow Notifications and Configure the Software to Start Automatically

 Configure Screen Recording Permissions

 Install the Login Screen Extension

 Restart the Computer

MacOS requires the user to allow Screen Recording for DisplayLink devices to work properly. The Screen Recording terminology used by MacOS does not indicate that what is on screen is actually being recorded by the DisplayLink software. Approving Screen Recording enables the DisplayLink driver to access the pixels it needs to display video on an external display connected to a DisplayLink docking station. DisplayLink Manager does not store or record any screen content.

If you enabled notifications from DisplayLink Manager in the instructions above, the software will remind you to allow Screen Recording if it detects this permission is missing.

9. Because the new permission will only be active the time you start the application, macOS will invite you to “Quit & Reopen”.

Now that the DisplayLink software has adequate permissions, re-open DisplayLink Manager from Applications in the Finder. On MacOS 11 (Big Sur) the application will restart automatically.

The DisplayLink login screen allows the external screens to work and show the login screen when the computer starts up, prior to the DisplayLink software loading after logging in.

10. To use the login screen extension, download and install it from the link available on the front page of the DisplayLink Manager software.

Restart the Computer

12. After completing the steps above we recommend restarting the computer to finalise the installation and test that the settings are configured correctly.

Troubleshooting

In very rare cases, old versions of the DisplayLink software may cause erratic behaviour such as sporadic lock ups, or peripherals to stop working after a period of time.

If updating the DisplayLink software to the latest version and configuring the software as described above does not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to completely remove the DisplayLink software from the computer and do a clean installation from scratch.
