situation in Oxford became worse and Queen Henrietta and Sir Jeffrey Henrietta was pregnant again, so she Hudson with his pet monkey travelled to Exeter for the birth, but was forced to leave her baby there and travel to France. She continued to support Charles with funds and an exchange of letters, but the Royal couple did not meet again and Charles’s execution left her destitute, being no longer the Queen but Queen Mother to Charles II. After the Restoration she returned to England several times but by 1665 she was suffering with bronchitis – blamed on the British weather - and died near Paris in 1669 having taken an excessive dose of opiates. She was buried in the basilica of St Denis and her heart was buried at Chaillot. In our large painting, Henrietta is accompanied by the court dwarf, Sir Jeffrey Hudson, an unusual example of a proportionate dwarf. He was presented to the Duke of Buckingham by his father, an employee of the Duke, who in turn presented him to the Royal Court. Eventually he became no longer prepared to be a clown or to suffer the butt of jests and he challenged his chief tormentor, Crofts, to a duel. Crofts treated it as a joke but Hudson arrived with a pistol and shot his opponent through the head. Duelling was illegal so he was forced to flee to France where he was later captured and held as a slave for 25 years by Barbary pirates. He was released in 1669 and died of unknown causes in 1682.  There is a good portrait of Henrietta’s brother, Louis XIII, to the right of the large portrait and to the left is her youngest daughter, Princess Henrietta. Above it is a metal tray with the embossed image of her father, King Henri IV, who was assassinated in Paris Henrietta Maria married Charles took a dislike to the Duke of Buckingham, in 1610. £30k funding to help achieve carbon neutral homes
A carbon neutral toolkit will assist developers, housing providers, existing homeowners, self-builders and local communities wishing to work with three District Councils to bring forward sustainable carbon neutral applications. Cotswold, West Oxfordshire and Forest of Dean District Councils declared a ‘climate emergency’ earlier this year, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality within the next decade. The £30,000 grant from the Local Government Housing Advisers Programme will secure expert advice to assist in producing a ‘toolkit’ (similar to a residential design guide) to promote the delivery of highly efficient carbon neutral homes.
Cllr Lisa Spivey, CCD, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to initiate a robust guide for developers and homeowners to advance carbon neutral design. We are committed to working with our partner councils to create sustainable and vibrant developments whilst protecting our rural landscape and heritage.
“The Council’s work to tackle the climate emergency goes hand in hand with delivering social rented homes - if we build carbon zero houses we significantly reduce the energy costs for future tenants.”
Cllr Steve Good, WDC, added: “ A well-designed toolkit can tackle the design and delivery of major developments including a new garden village, single dwellings, rural exception sites and the retro-fitting of existing homes across the partnership.”
Cllr Di Martin, FDDC explained: “A key strategic aim of this partnership is to help tackle climate change by accelerating the delivery of energy efficient and carbon neutral dwellings while addressing the demands of existing stock, meeting the needs of a growing population and promoting growth in the local economy.”
Working alongside the production of local plan policies, the three councils aim to introduce the toolkit by spring 2021.

Don’t do drink & drug driving
The campaign starts on 3rd December
Drink drivers constitute not only a danger to themselves but to other more responsible road users.
A twin-pronged campaign to tackle drink and drug driving over the Christmas period has been launched in Gloucestershire, aiming to educate drivers and pubs and social clubs about the dangers of getting behind the wheel after consuming any alcohol or drugs.
Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl has contacted licensees, encouraging them to promote taxis and alternative means of transport home, and to offer free soft drinks for drivers, or some non-alcoholic drinks options. Mr Surl said he wants to help customers and would rather drink drivers didn’t get on the roads in the first place rather than get stopped for drink driving.
The police will be out in force over the Christmas period. Chief Inspector Alistair Barby said, “We all know of the profound impact that driving after having been drinking or taking drugs can have on people, we will ensure that those who ignore this advice will be targeted. It is important that those people understand the consequences of their actions.”

The Cotswolds Conservation Board (CCB) submitted a detailed response which actively supports the need for improvements to this busy and problematic stretch of road. CCB also urges Highways England to continue to work with the Board on its recommendations to further improve the proposed works..i.e: any new route would be as originally conceived: a truly ‘landscape-led’ design which would benefit road users and further reduce the adverse effects – and increase the beneficial effects – on wildlife and the local landscape.
As the entire stretch of proposed new route lies within the boundaries of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the CCB is working with Highways England and other conservation bodies to ensure that proposed improvements to the A417 Missing Link are genuinely ‘landscape-led’.
In its consultation response, the Board has worked to identify and highlight priority recommendations for Highways England as follows:
1. A comprehensive and quantitative assessment of the overall balance of adverse and beneficial effects for the Cotswolds AONB.
2. Give further consideration to the potential benefits and viability of a ‘cut-and-cover’ ‘tunnel’ option, instead of the 25 metre deep and 1 kilometre long open cutting with a green bridge which is currently proposed.
Calculations made by the Board show the cut-and-cover option would be overall at a comparative cost of the current proposal, with the addition of many more benefits for the environment – including creating a greater habitat area for wildlife; reduced noise, air, and light pollution; retained woodland; a reduction in the area of land affected by a new scheme; increased tranquillity; an enhanced experience of walking the Cotswold Way National Trail; and a significant reduction in excavated and relocated material.
3. Give further consideration to alternatives to relocating excavated material from the proposed new route to the head of the Upper Churn Valley at Shab Hill Junction, and to the adverse effects of excavating and disposing of large volumes of excavated materials on site.
Current proposals could potentially involve a quantity of excavated material the equivalent of 10 times the volume of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Current plans include relocating a proportion of this to the proposed Shab Hill junction – which is currently an area of precious calcareous grassland – an important priority habitat for a number of plant and wildlife species. The Board’s alternative suggestions would significantly reduce the volume of excavated material and the volume of material that needs to be disposed of elsewhere, lessening the impact on the surrounding landscape.
The Board fully appreciates the restrictions placed on Highways England in relation to the scheme’s budget. It’s suggested recommendations have been aimed to achieve overall comparative costs.
The Board remains committed to continuing to work closely and constructively with Highways England to achieve the jointly agreed landscape-led vision, design principles, and objectives for any solution – as agreed with Highways England in 2017.
The recent Landscapes Review of National Parks and AONBs, commissioned by government and recognising the Cotswolds as a potential National Park, reinforces the need for a highly sensitive and genuine landscape-led solution for the A417.
Liz Eyre, Chairman of the Cotswolds Conservation Board, said, “We’re pleased to be working with Highways England. The need for this stretch of road to be improved is undeniable. As an organisation whose statutory duty is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Cotswolds, the CCB have responded to the proposed A417 Missing Link plans responsibly making a number of costed and considered recommendations which could deliver a number of significant further improvements, ensuring even more that the scheme is truly as far as possible landscape-led.

A New Walk for 2020
Do you enjoy walking? Have you ever thought about doing a long distance walk but are put off by the daily distances and Saturday 14th December 2019 at 7.30pm the terrain? THE COTSWOLD SCHOOL The Cotswold Voluntary Wardens have put together a linear Bourton-on-the-Water walk called Delights of the Eastern Cotswolds TICKETS £12.00 The walk is organised in a series of 8 walks all between 5 and 8 miles Available from: and will take place on the third Thursday of the month starting in April Visitor Information Centre Bourton-on-the-Water 2020. North Cotswolds Rotary
On 8th October, North Cotswolds Rotary held its inaugural Sustainability Community Meeting, a get together for the local community. Nearly 90 people representing 28 organisations and clubs got together for an evening to discuss practical steps to Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle plastics. The meeting included the launch of the Yellow Bins for TerraCycle recycling. Despite our best efforts to avoid plastics it may take manufacturers many years to reduce or replace plastics in their products, many of which cannot be recycled by local authorities. But products such as crisp packets, bread wrappers, biscuit packets, sweet wrappers, toothpaste tubes, brushes and Pringles tubes all can be collected and returned to a company called TerraCycle who turn them into things like garden furniture! In cooperation with Gloucestershire County Council, Fran Hamilton, a volunteer from Stow on the Wold has just taken delivery of the first batch of yellow wheelie bins that will be placed at a number of sites in the local area. So please keep a look out for them. A key message from the evening was that recycling can only go so far – the most effective thing we can all do is to reduce the amount of single-use-plastic we consume in the first place. And it is clear that there is not enough information readily available to guide people. To help, we are aiming to grow a network of people who can share and spread information to help us all make better choices. If your company, organisation or school would like to help, or needs help, with reducing the impact of single use plastics in the Cotswolds; or maybe you’d like to become a ‘yellow bin collection point’ for TerraCycle; then please contact us by email: [email protected] or use the NCR3Rs Facebook page. ROTARY CLUB Tree of Light & Christmas Fair Once again, the Club is organising the annual Tree of Light and popular Mulled Wine Stall at the Christmas Fair on Saturday 7 December from 2 – 7 pm.
The lights on the Tree, which have been donated in memory of loved ones, will be switched on at 5.30 p.m. Last year the Tree of Light raised approximately £2,000 + Gift Aid and the mulled wine stall raised over £900.

As usual the Club will run a Mulled Wine Stall with mince pies to raise money for local good causes. Last year large crowds attended the Fair and so many bought mulled wine from the Rotary stall that extra supplies had to be brought in twice, as trade was so much livelier than in previous years. Come and help us if you can spare the time!

They’re putting in some good performances, with their coach Mark Ingham and Head Club Coach Matt Carter, pleased with their development. They had a tough start with an away fixture to serial Junior County Cup champions Cinderford who took a strong win. However, they turned it around with their next match against Cheltenham Saracens which resulted in a tight 27 - 24 win. An away derby match against Shipston followed with a deserved win for the home team. Old Pats, also recent County champions, were up next with the Colts travelling to Cheltenham. The U13 boys with a very strong team, some of which had moved up from last year’s U11s, including Charlie Astor who ran superbly on the day for 4th place overall. Kian Dee keeps on improving and put in another strong performance, pacing the race perfectly to finish 5th, George Swayne has worked hard since joining the club and this showed, with a very strong performance for 10th place. These three results brought the 1st team home in first place.
After winning the Cross Challenge at Cardiff the day before, Kiya Dee again put in a great performance, winning the U15 girls race with ease.

COTSWOLD TIMES | 45 Moreton in Marsh Cricket Club
Moreton Cricket Club Celebrated a very successful season at its recent Awards Night. The town’s cricketers emulated our league winning footballers by claiming the Cotswolds Hills Cricket League Division Two title. With only three defeats all season they are promoted to Division One along with local rivals Adlestrop.
At the recent awards night Club Chairman Mathew Gillett handed out awards for the Players. James Hurrell won Players player and Bowler of the Season. Captains Player was Ashley Hurrell and the Batting award went to Greg Stotesbury. A special Award was presented in honour of John Currill our long term groundsman who passed away earlier this year. The Champagne Moment of the season went to Ashley Hurrell for a stunning catch.
The Team also received the League Trophy and Winners Shield, and Captain Graham Jones thanked all involved in the Club for their hard work, making it such a successful season on and off the field.
The Club wil be fielding two teams in the Cotswold Hills League next season - and it will always be nice to see more local cricketers from Moreton’s ever growing population playing at the club. HOCKEY The 1s have had a mixed bag of successes recording a further 2 wins against Yate 2 and Old Bristolians but losses against Westberries 2 and league-leaders, Hereford. The team are currently second in the table with 2 more games to go before Christmas. The 2s have also had a rollercoaster set of results with a win against Stroud 2, a draw against Colwell & Malvern and a loss against local rivals, Bretforton. With 3 games before Christmas the team will be pressing to improve their current standing of eighth in the league. Walking hockey continues to attract players of all backgrounds to Blockley’s Clubhouse with another session on Sunday 1st Dec coming up. Starting at 2pm with teas and cake to follow, £2 per player and all welcome. Junior Hockey The Juniors were back to it this week and will continue to the 11th December before breaking up for Christmas. Blockley also entered their first U12 Boys GHA In2Hockey Tournament, which had some tough competition and last-minute changes. There was fantastic team spirit from the boys which saw four of the boys take it in turns to play in goal, all of whom have never done it before. The whole team encouraged each other, building on what they had experienced in previous games and can only mean a stronger working group for the future. Blockley will be back out on the 24th November at the U10s Boys tournament at Dean Close School, and for the first time, the U10 Girls GHA In2Hockey Tournaments at Cheltenham Ladies College. We wish both teams the very best of luck and hope they thoroughly enjoy it. Exciting times next February when our favourite GB hockey player, Ed Horler, returns to run a half term hockey camp on 21st February. Register your interest on the website. FOOTBALL Three games played this month; a 3-2 loss against Alcester with goals from T.Stevens and S.Jinks. A further 5-2 against Shipston Colts in the cup loss with goals from A.Malec and J.Nibblett. 5-7 against Shipston Colts in the league loss. Goals from J.Vanghi x2, L.Oxley, A.Malec and T.Stevens. The next game is at home on Saturday against FISSC in the Divisional cup. SOCIAL Blockley Sports Club will be holding their regular Prize Bingo nights at St George’s Hall, Blockley in the run up to Christmas.
