I am saddened that we have sustained the loss of members. Most recently, Peg Minnich and Lloyd Stagg. Both had such an impact. Peg was our classic woman who improved the scenery and conversation and led in our raft ups. Lloyd was on the Board of Directors for several years and “may or may not” have injured himself twice with the race cannon. Proudly hung in Our Grill Room is the orange flag with a hole in it. He supposedly and unfortunately shot himself twice while using the cannon while serving on the Race Committee. He even shot the flag, which you can see. Lloyd left the Juniors a 5-year donation of $6000 each year. If you see his widow Beverly, please thank her. We have had many members who have overcome COVID 19, and for that I can’t say “thank you” enough to our Lord Jesus Christ. We continue with our normal Christmas events this year. We will have our Christmas Children’s Party, the Marina Party and Commodores Ball. I hope you will each join us for as many events as you feel comfortable attending. And while I will miss you if you aren’t here, I understand why. Wear a mask inside our Club unless you have a drink in your hand or are seated at a table for food. We can only protect each other if we follow these simple rules. Oh, and don’t forget, shoes are required, (I know it’s silly to say) - kids, too. We have had so many glasses break on our carpet that your children’s bare feet are at risk if they have no shoes. I thank you, PYC Membership, Leadership, and Staff, for allowing me to serve this Club. I have learned so much, learned to sail, learned to lead. The sailing was this Club’s gift to me. I can’t get enough. Sailing is my release, my escape. I never imagined the impact this job would have on me. Thanks to all of you who have pushed/helped me. César Travado, Tom Pace, David Owlsey, Mike Levert . . . you four made me a sailor. Jim Reeves . . .you plowed the road for me to serve. Jim Warwick, Scott Segers, John Redfield, and Andrea Vandal, you paved my road inside the club. My husband, Chris, I can’t say thank you enough. When I was initially asked by P/C Susan McKinnon to be on the Board, it was Chris saying “yes” that allowed me to serve. Our kids were 4, 6, and 8 at the time. It was crazy, but he said - “Do it.” This is my last article after 7 years on the Board - a bit “bittersweet.” But, I hope I made an impact. You have all made an impact on me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. The Curtain Closes

Commodore Nicole Ferry & First Mate Chris Ferry “Thanks for the memories!”

Changing of the Guard First day on the water in 2 weeks! January 3, 2021 While waiting for the wind, I rigged, Congratulations to the new team for 2021. derigged, and dragged to the beach & back. Oh, and I didn’t capsize, They will lead us well! had no boom incidents, and my hair Thank you again for your strong support for the past two years! stayed dry! PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Tom Pace I love words and word craft. That blending of proper and, at times, improper words and phrases to tell a story, or to simply have a grin among friends. Thinking about all that 2020 has put up for everyone to navigate, one word comes to mind to express why I’m baffled most of the time. WHODATHUNKIT???

(True, this is not an actual word, but man, it sure seems real to me!) Who on earth thought the world would endure the Covid-19 pandemic? Who thought we would see such extreme division and vitriol amidst social and political unrest?? And, for those of us along “her-ik-un” alley - who thought we could be exposed to storm after storm, and get such a punch from a little Cat-1 system that walloped like no other in over a decade and a half??? Not a chance that we would have a “Trump-thunk-it” or a “Cantore-thunk-it,” or even a smidgen of a “Skanska-thunk-it,” yet here we are, rolling with the punches the year has delivered. Not only is PYC doing OK and surviving, but the Club is t-h-r-i-v-i-n-g, and in all candor - while always optimistic, Tom-did-na-thunk-it” either! Your PYC has weathered these challenges well and collectively as a family - from new and old members, to managers and staff; and our venerable old building has as well. Across the board, PYC is strong and moving forward. The grounds look fantastic, food, beverage, and service are phenomenal, the marina repairs are well in process, and the insurance proceeds will be enough to repair our damage and return the Club to a fine, fit, and finish. In that, I believe that ultimately, We-all-thunk-it” and really “knew it” all along!! Going forward into 2021, I am eager and energized with what we have in the works for PYC … We will remain diligent in protecting members and staff amid virus concerns, and we will be developing ways to gradually increase our ballroom functions, safely leading to the inevitable time when vaccines and treatments make the concerns of this year a happily distant memory. Our sailing presence in the GYA had some bright spots, and we will be expanding in our Lipton (Viper) racing program. Our PHRF/ Bay events will have a “shot in the arm” from the participation initially of the FISH Class boats and leading to more broad support from sailors in our Bay-Area Clubs. Our regional and national events will return with a Windsurfing Mid-Winter Championship, a Catalina 50-year celebration event, and the Melges 24 Bushwhacker Cup next November. Additionally, the postponed 100-yr GYA celebration will occur in New Orleans next Fall, and PYC needs to show up to that event as a strong contender for top honors on the water and in the bar! In leadership, management, finances, and yachting, your PYC has fantastic potential for a phenomenal year ahead. We learned a lot this year and Past Commodore Jim Reeves opined that 2020 represented an “unpredicted audible, called at the line,” as PYC made the adjustments with strong, continuous efforts to meet every challenge. My past few years on the Board, working with our Club Officers and Management, have been exceptional. Working with Commodore Ferry has been an amazing journey for both of us. Not only has she done fantastically for our Club in all our challenges, but she did so with an ever-present smile, energy that was off -the-chart, and a steadfast determination that our Membership would get our very best efforts. And during all of that, Nikki became a sailor! A few of us witnessed her hours on the water, recoveries from cold-weather capsize, and a constant determination to learn and improve. And the windier it became, the more she was itching to get on the water in her Laser. Nikki has just begun, and she understands to her core that being a sailor is a bit like being in the : once in, you’re in it for life! She will be instrumental in our Lipton Cup events throughout 2021, and she will continue to expand her sailing dreams. I can’t wait to see her progress!! Here’s wishing all of you a very happy and healthy holiday season - PYC is fortunate to have all of you members that absolutely make us “The South’s Finest”! AUBIE-SANTA ALOHA, TOM

“Awesomeness” (friend) “Whodathunkit!!” Reindeer Word Play Merry Christmas to all my PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET (TOM) Auburn Brethren! Rear Commodore’s Comments Dr. David Chandler PYC Progressing to 2021 The Pensacola Yacht Club is making determined progress toward the restoration of facilities damaged by Hurricane Sally. Commodore Nicole Ferry, Vice Commodore Tom Pace, Previous Coommodore John Matthews, General Manager Jim Warwick, Dockmaster Greg Spitzer, and Sailing Director CesarTravado are helping us progress through the necessary evolutions to right our ship.

The PYC Facilities Committee met on November 11, 2020, to review progress on the PYC Post- Sally Facilities Action List Dashboard to bring recommendations forward to the PYC Board of Directors meeting on November 18, 2020. MARINA We have removed all boats requiring salvage to clear the way for dock repairs. We received a repair bid of $128,195 from Bellingham Floating Docks. Also, we are evaluating cost opportunities to optimize our restoration value. Dale’s Marine completed most non- floating dock repairs, but additional repairs are pending in the last salvaged vessel area in the East Marina area. Dockmaster Greg Spitzer completed decking repair in East Marina. McLemore ordered our two electrical panels, and we expect receipt before December. We are leveraging technological innovations to permit a 3-Phase Hoist Motor installation for around $20K, more than a 50% saving, utilizing an inverter, a new motor, and surge protection for faster launching. Lastly, P/C Bob Dawkins notified us of a safety concern regarding the structural integrity of the hoist boom. PYC Member Stuart Smith, a structural engineer, completed an inspection and noted no significant problems. He did recommend some high zinc-content painting and some routine line maintenance, which the BOD approved for completion under the supervision of D/M Spitzer. Another item brought forward by the PYC Facilities Committee and approved by the BOD was a change in the PYC Marina Rules 2.07 to increase the liability coverage requirement for resident and transient vessels from $300K to $500K. P/C Tim Burr indicated that SRYC made a similar change recently, and there is only a nominal premium charge for the increased coverage. DRY STORAGE Marina Chair Dave Oerting suggested PYC explore additional small boat/dinghy dry storage capacity utilizing the tennis courts and beach adjacent areas. Dry storage in these areas would have reduced amenities and would command reduced rates. Placement of the PYC Flying Scotts and possibly the Vipers in these areas would free up our standard dry storage and provide additional revenue. The PYC Facilities Committee recommended, and the BOD approved, a subcommittee to explore this initiative. Subcommittee members are General Manager James Warwick, Dockmaster Greg Spitzer, James Simkins, Sailing Director Cesar Travado, and Marina Chair Dave Oerting. FLEET P/C John Matthews, V/C Tom Pace, and PYC Member Hal Smith successfully searched for PYC RC Signal Vessel replacement for “Persistence.” PYC proffered a $70K offer for a trailerable 30-foot Mainship. The surveys and sea trials are complete. The PYC Finance Committee recommended and the BOD-approved payment of the $20K above the $50K insurance payment received for the PYC portion of “Persistence,” plus an additional $10K to purchase a trailer. The move to place the PYC RC Signal Vessel on a trailer will free up a wet slip, save on maintenance expenses, and obviate the need for hurricane haul out. Multiple PYC-owned boats sustained Hurricane Sally damage. The RS Ventures and Vipers are insured. Of the uninsured hulls, five Opti’s and one Laser are to be transported to Mclaughlin in TN for repair. Several 29ers, plus others, are undergoing local restoration by Sailing Director Travado. A Gulf Yachting Association grant application for $3K, to cover the costs of repairs and transportation of these uninsured hulls, is now complete and ready for submission before the GYA deadline of 12/01/20. We hope to learn of our successful application at the GYA Winter Meeting hosted by PYC in January 2021. BEACH New sea-wall construction, extending north from the existing East Marina wall, is now complete under the direction of Dock Manager Spitzer. Earth and crushed rock/crushed concrete will be used to fill in the parking lot area. Rock from the prior east-west wall will reinforce the new wall and open up the beach area. Sanders Beach barrier fence repairs underway with posts poured/placed, and completion is expected well in advance of this article’s publication. Governor DeSantis extended the “Executive Order for Hurricane Sally Emergency Conditions” another 60 days, as of November 13, 2020. This extension will allow us more time to explore PYC beach recovery. We are pending a 19-year MHW survey to establish the amount of beach that we can reclaim. (Continued on page 6) PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET (Continued from page 5) POOL A new filter motor is pending receipt. The pool is closed until the installation of this motor. JUNIOR SAILING CLUBHOUSE James Simkins, César Travado, Stuart Smith, Tom Pace, Carlos Godinez, and Commodore Ferry are exploring replacing the PYC Jr. Sailing Club House with modular units and shipping containers. We will want to expedite this project’s completion to support our Junior Sailing Program, summer camps, and protection from the elements for our boats. PYC MAIN CLUBHOUSE We have received all expected insurance quotes for roof damage. Ballroom carpets are cleaned and scheduled for replacement pending receipt of insurance claim check. A survey of PYC chimneys earlier this year indicated that all had significant safety issues. We requested proposals for repairing all chimneys and ventless fireplace installation in the entry and Commodore Room. The PYC Finance Committee recommended and the PYC Board of Directors approved acceptance of a bid from Doodlebuggers for about $25K. We hope to coordinate chimney repairs with roofing replacement to help avoid roof leakage issues. WATSON SAILING CENTER Power air conditioning and lift stations for sewage are pending receipt of the West Marina electrical panel. Roof damage quotes are complete, and roof replacement is pending receipt of the insurance claim check. GROUNDS P/C Alan McMillan contacted Marine Max concerning repairs to the Hurricane Sally damaged fence and screening separating PYC grounds from the area they lease. They indicated recent receipt of a check for their insurance claim and their intent to initiate and complete needed repairs. Our downed oak trees are now removed, but our beautiful PYC landscape has been somewhat diminished by the absence of these trees destroyed by Ivan and Sally. Carlton Proctor forwarded an initiative for a “Legacy Tree Program” to restore the gracious southern charm of live oak trees adorning our PYC grounds. PC McMillan indicated that John Davies, owner of Panhandle Nurseries in Milton, had initiated a discussion about possible favorable pricing for purchase and planting of 15-foot to 20-foot live oak trees. The BOD recommended that the PYC Facilities Committee create a subcommittee to explore a “Legacy Tree Program” with Carlton Proctor and PC McMillan’s inclusion. We should all look forward to the opportunity to support plans to restore our property’s historic ambiance. Several members have expressed security concerns with non-member/non-guest individuals’ entry onto our grounds and into our pool and youth sailing area. Board Members Cynthia Cannon and Claire Rees introduced this topic for discussion. Options discussed included a Cypress frontage fence constructed to be architecturally pleasing and a barrier from the Clubhouse to the Sanders Beach fence, combined with a wall from the Clubhouse to East Marina. The latter would facilitate entry by members and guests into the ballrooms/clubhouse and cordon off the pool and junior sailing area. The Facilities Committee recommended transferring this project to the PYC Long-Range Planning Committee, and LRPC Chairperson P/C Jim Reeves agreed. INSURANCE All of our dreams and plans for PYC restoration are contingent on receipt of insurance claim proceeds. P/C Reeves recommended a private adjuster to help optimize our return. Pat Garrett, our private adjustor, has been working diligently on our Hurricane Sally damages insurance claim. He expects finalization and submission before Christmas. He will also be applying for a $300K advance to facilitate the of our restoration process. ACKNOWLEDGMENT It has been a great pleasure serving as PYC Facilities Committee Chairperson under Commodore Ferry during the challenges of 2020. Along with me, please acknowledge and express gratitude for the participation and significant contributions of our PYC Facilities Committee Members: Commodore Nicole Ferry, General Manager James Warwick, P/C John Matthews, Amir Fooladi, Bob Madden, Brooke Godinez, Carlos Godinez, Board Member Cynthia Cannon, Gloria McMillan, Dockmaster Greg Spitzer, Board Member James Simkins, P/C James Reeves, Marguerite Burr, P/C Ronald Bruce, Steve Cozart, Stuart Smith, Marina Chair Dave Oerting, Joseph Leccese, P/C Alan McMillan, and Carlton Proctor. Please accept my appreciation to all of you for this learning opportunity and your suggestions and guidance this past year. Please continue to assist Rear Commodore Elect James Simkins for PYC Facilities in 2021.

The pandemic had a major impact on the conduct of races/regattas, but when the time came to conduct a regatta, these individuals gave of their time and talent to get the races completed in a very professional manner. The following deserve recognition for their contribution: A very special THANK YOU to Greg Spitzer, PYC Dockmaster, for all the work and effort he provided in supporting every race that PYC hosted this year. He made sure the marks and anchors were ready; the boat were fueled and ready; and that all committee boats had ice, food, and beverages on board. He was always ready to help dock the committee boats and put them back in their slips and storage space. Greg, the Race Committee could not have done it without your help.

Valentines Day Look for upcoming announcements as we plan our celebration this year – We Will Party!

PYC’s Event Attendee Extraordinaire Few PYC events were not further enhanced by the presence of our lovely member, Peg Minnich. She was always effervescent on the arm of her husband. In fact, their radiance as a couple made them stand out in a crowd. Sadly, Peg passed away on November 11, 2020. Our Club will not be the same without her.

Peg and Chuck Minnich were a memorable couple, still in love after 61 years of marriage. She was a dedicated mother, mother-in-law, and “Mimi.” Her son-in-law, PYC’s previous Chef, Lee Lucier, declared that she was the only person from whom he’d take direction in the kitchen.

In her multi-faceted life, Peg was a model, teacher, artist, world traveler, expert cook, entertainer, and entrepreneur. She remained humble despite her many talents. Her friends were numerous and everlasting.

Our PYC events will continue to be extraordinary, but they will lack the flourish that she contributed. The Pensacola Yacht Club invites Peg’s friends to her ultimate event on February 28, 2021: “A Celebration of the Life of Peg Minnich.” Peggy Joan Hicks Minnich

PAGE 13 | JIB SHEET Do You Ride? Bob Kriegel Steve Harp, Bob Kriegel, and Mike McCord set out October 20th on the annual long distance SOB ride – the game plan was to head northwest, possibly to Yellowstone National Park in Montana and then south to Utah to explore the many national parks in that state. Weather changed that – temperatures in the teens mandated an alternate – so the game plan became west, then south, and lastly Utah!

Mike took an early and insurmountable lead in the drop-the-bike competition, scoring double points for a shoulder drop on Bob’s bike before we got out of Alabama. We went thru Arkansas and did one of the famous pig trail rides in the Ozark National forest heading for New Mexico. The cold north drove us south to the land of aliens – Roswell, and then to Big Bend National Park in Texas – great riding, roads, wildlife; we saw elk, deer, fox, and eagles! After a break in Tucson, Arizona we headed for the spectacular national parks in Utah. Nothing appropriately describes the terrain – mountains, arches, canyons, winding roads, wandering herds of free-range cattle and horses. We spent time at Canyon Land, Arches, Capitol Reef, Zion National Parks as well as various state parks and the Great Basin National Park in Nevada. All were amazing, but possibly the first three were the most incredible. However, the beauty of Utah runs from border-to-border. The rides between the parks were often as scenic as the destination. It takes memories, not pictures or descriptions, to do justice to Utah’s majestic mountains and canyons. And, we could not leave Utah without doing Bob’s favorite three-mile stretch down a vertical 1500’ cliff – the Moab Dugway - complete with no shoulder barriers, gravel roads, and switchbacks – and a high scoring all-time favorite. All told, we spent unforgettable time in fifteen national parks and forests, had great weather, and absolutely wonderful riding! When the group split up for the final leg home – Bob proceeded directly, Mike added a day to the south, and Steve a day to the north! And last, put our last remaining ride on your calendar - the Last Ride of the Year to the Stagecoach Café in Stockton, AL, December 30th – another favorite ride to a rally get together and a great lunch.

Roads of Utah Bob’s Road! PAGE 14 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler When you can’t have a raft up, have a “raft not.” That’s exactly what about 50 people did on . It was an incredibly beautiful evening with a bright full moon and moderate temperatures. All the usual ghosts, ghouls, and goblins were in attendance, but the Tiger King and the Skanska Barges took the prize. Our bartender kept our glasses full and The Platinum Premier Trio kept our feet dancing. The food from PYC’s kitchen was delicious, as always, and a good time was had by all. We are currently in the planning stage for the annual PYC Marina Party scheduled for Saturday, December 12. The progressive boat visitation will not be possible this year because Hurricane Sally took a toll on our marina and on member’s boats. The Platinum Premier Band is scheduled to play in the Sailing Center, so stay tuned. Details will be announced on Face Book and e-mail blasts. Hurricane Sally was hard on our raft-up and cruising fleet, causing major damage or total loss to some of the most beloved boats in our marina. Several people are now seriously “boat shopping,” and we may have new boats arriving soon. Of course, these boats will need names. Choosing a name for a new boat is a serious decision for every boat owner. It is just as important to “name your boat right” as it is to have the “right name for your boat.” If the boat has never had a name, one simply appeals to Poseidon and the four wind gods - Boreas, Zephyrus, Eurus, and Notus (north, west, east, and south). Appeal to each of these gods individually for safe passages for the vessel and all who sail aboard her. Be sure to offer a libation after each plea. The gods particularly like champagne, the “good stuff” not the “cheap stuff.” If your new boat already has a name and you want to christen her with a new moniker, you must start with a PURGE. Do not bring anything aboard with the new name on it until this purge is complete. Remove anything and everything from the boat bearing the old name. If it cannot be removed paint over it. White Out can be used on maintenance logs and other ship’s papers. When you are absolutely certain the old name is nowhere on the boat, you may start the renaming ceremony by tossing a coin with the old name into the sea. Poseidon is the keeper of the Ledger of The Deep and must approve all name changes. Ask him to remove all records and recollections of the previous name from this worthy vessel that will hereafter be known with the new name. Adding a libation to this plea is highly recommended, if not required. At this point, release all lines tying the boat to the shore and then quickly reclaim her from the sea and christen her with her new name. We hope to see several christenings and renaming ceremonies in the marina in the next few months. Good luck to all those shopping!
