Demetra Dee Plakas (born November 9, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois; is an American/Greek musician, known as the drummer in the all-female rock band L7. He was preceded by Roy Koutsky. He married Kirk Canning. They don't have children, but she has two nieces named Anastasia and Gabriella. Plakas' early band joined a punk band called Problem Dogs as their drummer. Although he had never played drums before, he bought a set and learned to play as a band rehearsing in the basement of bass player Algis Kizys' house. In Chicago's thriving punk scene, the band played sporadic performances at places like Space Place and O'Banion's, opening for The Bangles at The Metro. They also released a single, City Hall/ You Are The Knife, after Kizys' departure in 1982. The band underwent several personnel changes, with Plakas' original bandmates Rick Radtke and John Connors reforming in Los Angeles as Pirate Radio. L7 In 1987, Plakas joined the rock group L7, which later released six studio albums, with Bricks Are Heavy in 1992 including the hit single Pretend We're Dead. In 1993, Dee and her L7 bandmate Jennifer Finch supported Japanese musicians hiding in several TV shows,[1] they also appeared in the original promotional video for her song Doubt. [2] The group was disbanded in 2001. Plakas's 2000 sex contest is perhaps best known for a contest in which the yellowing L7 stand one night with their drummer. [3] Post-L7 Plakas later played in solo projects by himself and former L7 member Donita Sparks. She later married Kirk Canning, who played cello in Nirvana's Nevermind, and settled in Santa Monica. [2] The band underwent several personnel changes, with Plakas' original bandmates Rick Radtke and John Connors reforming as Pirate Radio upon arrival in Los Angeles. L7 After watching him play drums with Pirate Radio in 1987, contacts from LA Weekly told Plakas that punk rock group L7 was looking for a drummer. [4] Two months later, after Donita Sparks contacted him, Plakas agreed to join L7. [4] After Plakas joined the band, L7 was fixated and gained momentum. Sparks states we found that sweet spot with Dee. It was a big break for us. Because he is what we have lost. He had the same sensibility as us: we were punks but we did hard rock. [5] She was named The Goddess of Thunder by her bandmates. [6] Plakas played drums on six of L7's seven studio albums, including the band's hit single Pretend We're Dead from Bricks Are Heavy in 1992. The band appeared on lollapalooza's main stage in 1994. In 1994, Plakas and his L7 bandmate Jennifer Finch performed with Japanese musician Hide,[7][8] also appearing in the original video for his song Doubt. [9] Plakas appeared in John Waters' film Serial Mom as a musician and performer in the fictional band Camel Lips in 1994. [1] Plakas and L7 were the subject of Krist Novoselic's 1998 pseudo-documentary L7: The Beauty Process. [1] L7 disbanded in 2001 but was reunited in 2014. [7] During his hiatus during the L7 hiatus, Plakas went on to play drums in solo projects by himself and former L7 member Donita Sparks. [10] In 2007–2008, Plakas toured with Donita Sparks and Stellar Moments in support of transmitic releases. [10] Ken Tucker, then general editor for Entertainment Weekly, stated that Dee Plakas continues to drum with fluid power and encourages a lot of music on the album. The album received generally favorable reviews. [13] Plakas and L7 announced a six-week national tour with a start date of May 10, 2019. [14] In April 2019, Plakas reported that he was supported by Drum Workshop and had used their Black Velvet kit on tour. • A Distributed Music Information System
A Distributed Music Information System Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of London for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Yves Raimond Submitted: November 2008 Department of Electronic Engineering, Queen Mary, University of London I certify that this thesis, and the research to which it refers, are the product of my own work, and that any ideas or quotations from the work of other people, published or otherwise, are fully acknowledged in accordance with the standard referencing practices of the discipline. I acknowledge the helpful guidance and support of my supervisor, Prof Mark Sandler. 2 Abstract Information management is an important part of music technologies today, covering the man- agement of public and personal collections, the construction of large editorial databases and the storage of music analysis results. The information management solutions that have emerged for these use-cases are still isolated from each other. The information one of these solutions manages does not benefit from the information another holds. In this thesis, we develop a distributed music information system that aims at gathering music- related information held by multiple databases or applications. To this end, we use Semantic Web technologies to create a unified information environment. Web identifiers correspond to any items in the music domain: performance, artist, musical work, etc. These web identifiers have structured representations permitting sophisticated reuse by applications, and these representations can quote other web identifiers leading to more information. We develop a formal ontology for the music domain. This ontology allows us to publish and interlink a wide range of structured music-related data on the Web.

The band gained a certain amount of notoriety for their performance at the 1992 Reading Festival, when Donita Sparks removed her tampon on- stage and threw it into the crowd in protest against the missiles being thrown by the crowd.

Hardcore punk-rock had been mostly a male phenomenon. Girls were excluded from hardcore the same way they were excluded in society from many other male-only rituals, whether street gangs or USA football. The "riot grrrrls" movement of the 1990s changed the sociopolitical landscape of punk-rock by introducing the "girl factor" into the equation of frustration/ depression/ desperation/ anger. The riot-grrrrls movement originated largely in and around Seattle (Olympia, to be precise), and indeed it was Seattle that boasted the most fertile scene for female-only bands. The movement's manifesto was the article "Women, sex and rock and roll", published by "Puncture" in 1989. The first radio program to address the angry young girls was "Your Dream Girl", conducted by Lois Maffeo on Olympia's KAOS. One of the earliest riot-grrrrls was Molly Neuman, who joined Allison Wolfe to create the fanzine "Girl Germs", one of the main alternative media for college girls. In the summer of 1991 they celebrated themselves at the Olympia campus, shouting their slogan "Revolution Girl Style Now!" The mood had been changing throughout the 1980s: the magazine "Sassy" had been founded already in 1987 as an alternative, not afraid to tackle brutal themes, to the conventional magazines for teenage girls.

Moon May 2015 © 2015 Joshua D. Moon. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Progress, Restoration, and the Life of Rock after Alternative by JOSHUA D. MOON has been approved for the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Vladimir L. Marchenkov Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts Margaret Kennedy-Dygas Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract MOON, JOSHUA D., Ph.D., May 2015, Interdisciplinary Arts Progress, Restoration, and the Life of Rock after Alternative Director of Dissertation: Vladimir L. Marchenkov This dissertation engages the state of rock music in Western popular culture over the past twenty years. Taking inspiration from the philosophy of Theodor W. Adorno, the project utilizes the concepts of progress and restoration to describe how musicians, scholars, and journalists have confronted challenges facing the continued practice of rock music into the twenty-first century. I argue that the tension between this progressive impulse in rock and a restorative response provides an explanation for aspects of rock’s recent history and its creative challenges. Via interpretations of musical texts, references to artistic statements, and engagement with aesthetic theory, the chapters reveal how these concepts have been navigated in the evolving state of rock, including responding to anxieties such as the “death of rock.” Emphasis includes advocacy for a renewed focus in academic scholarship on rock as a musical phenomenon.
