NBCUniversal International Television Production, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and TF1 enter ground- breaking partnership to produce US procedural dramas LONDON – 13 April 2015: NBCUniversal International Television Production (NBCU-ITVP), Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and TF1 today announce that they have entered into an international co-production partnership to produce original US-style TV procedural dramas, allowing these leading international broadcasters to secure a pipeline of high quality, US-style procedural content from NBCUniversal. It is the first time that European broadcasters have partnered with a major US media company for a deal of this nature. This unique tripartite collaboration, conceived by Michael Edelstein, President of NBCU-ITVP, brings together leading international broadcasters – Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and TF1 – with a major US media company that produces world class content across multiple genres. The partnership is designed to produce up to three new dramas over two years and will benefit from NBCUniversal’s wealth of expertise in producing high-quality, long-running procedural dramas such as Law & Order and House. Commenting on the partnership, Michael Edelstein said: “Procedural drama is a highly popular TV format in the global marketplace due to its episodic, rather than serialized, format. This pioneering venture with RTL and TF1 has the ability to create a number of exciting new series and represents the bold approach of these forward thinking broadcasters. August 2013 ABSTRACT From the late 1970s on, as competition intensified, British broadcasters searched for new ways to cover the escalating budgets for top-end drama. A common industry practice, overseas co-productions seems the fitting answer for most broadcasters; for the BBC, however, creating programmes that appeal to both national and international markets could mean being in conflict with its public service ethos. Paradoxes will always be at the heart of an institution that, while pressured to be profitable, also carries a deep-rooted disapproval of commercialism. -

MASTERPIECE Launches 50th Anniversary Season with Hit Drama Elizabeth is Missing Starring Glenda Jackson Flagship PBS Drama Series Turns 50 on Sunday, January 10, 2021 Boston, MA; July 29, 2020---MASTERPIECE on PBS will kick off its 50th anniversary season in January 2021 with Elizabeth is Missing, a BAFTA-nominated mystery starring two-time Academy Award® winner Glenda Jackson in her triumphant return to MASTERPIECE. In a performance described by the Guardian (UK) as “harrowing, compelling, unsentimental and altogether magnificent,” Jackson portrays a woman in the grip of dementia trying to solve the case of her missing friend. Almost 50 years ago, in 1971, Jackson won two Emmy® awards for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in MASTERPIECE’s Elizabeth R. Elizabeth is Missing will premiere on Sunday, January 3 at 9pm ET. January will also see the premiere of a new adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, a seven-part series based on James Herriot’s heartwarming, entertaining and hilarious adventures as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire; a 1970s adaptation was a hit when it aired on public television. Email: [email protected] June 2010 This working paper forms part of the CBR Research Programme on Corporate Governance Abstract In UK public service broadcasting, recent regulatory change has increased the role of the private sector in television production, culminating in the BBC’s recent introduction of ‘creative competition’ between in-house and independent television producers. Using the concept of ‘cognitive distance’, this paper focuses on the increasing role of the independent sector as a source of creativity and innovation in the delivery of programming for the BBC. The paper shows that the intended benefits of introducing new competencies into public service broadcasting have been thwarted by, on the one hand, a high level of cognitive proximity between in-house and external producers and, on the other, a conflict in values between the BBC and the independent sector, with the latter responding to a commercial imperative that encourages creativity in profitable genres, leaving gaps in other areas of provision. While recent regulatory reform appears to have had a limited impact on the diversity of programming, it does suggest a closer alignment of programme content with the imperatives of capital. Implications for the literature on communities of practice are noted. -

THE 7.39 WRITTEN BY DAVID NICHOLLS Carnival Films and BBC One The 7.39 Carnival Films and BBC One’s new two-part romantic drama written by David Nicholls (One Day, Starter For Ten), The 7.39 stars David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Sheridan Smith (Mrs Biggs), Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) and Sean Maguire (Scott & Bailey). Writer, David Nicholls says, “The 7.39 is a love story for grown-ups, the sort of drama that has not been seen on television for a while. I'm delighted to be writing for the BBC again and working with such a terrific cast and production team.” Carl Matthews (David Morrissey) is stuck. At the age of 45 his life has become routine. Every morning Carl fights his way onto the 7.39 train where he sees the same unhappy faces doing the same daily commute into Waterloo. Happily married to his best friend from college, Maggie (Olivia Colman), with whom he has two healthy, if sullen, teenage kids, life for Carl has become predictable. Sally Thorn (Sheridan Smith) has recently moved out of London, where she still works as the manager of a health club. But she’s unsure if she likes her new suburban life and is anxious about the prospect of marriage to Ryan (Sean Maguire), an enthusiastic personal trainer. Ryan is desperate to start a family, get married, settle down. Not that there’s much time to worry about these things, not while she’s running to catch the 7.39. Over a fight for a seat one morning Sally and Carl begin talking and suddenly their daily commute becomes a lot more interesting. -

Roles followed in two one-off television dramas co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The first was Conspiracy (2001), a film surrounding the story of the Wannsee Conference in 1942 to consolidate the decision to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The film prompted Tom’s first encounter with Kenneth Branagh who took the lead role of Heydrich. The second project came in 2002 in the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award- winning biopic of Winston Churchill The Gathering Storm, starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave. Tom played the role of Randolph Churchill, Winston’s son, and cites that particular experience – working alongside Finney and Redgrave, as well as Ronnie Barker, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Broadbent – as extraordinary; one that changed his perspective on the art, craft and life of an actor. Tom graduated from RADA in 2005, and within a few weeks was cast as Oakley in the British independent film Unrelated by first-time director Joanna Hogg. Unrelated tells the story of a woman in her mid-40s who arrives alone at the Italian holiday home of an extended bourgeois family. -

Biographical Notes Rebecca Eaton Executive Producer, MASTERPIECE Rebecca Eaton took over the helm of the PBS series MASTERPIECE THEATRE and MYSTERY! in 1985, and oversaw a highly successfully relaunch of MASTERPIECE in 2008 that has attracted a new generation of viewers to the series. Eaton has brought American audiences the recent hits Sherlock and Downton Abbey, the top-rated PBS drama of all time, as well as such high-profile titles as Mr Selfridge, Endeavour, Wallander, Prime Suspect, Cranford, Little Dorrit, Inspector Lewis, and The Complete Jane Austen. Under her leadership, MASTERPIECE has won 55 Primetime Emmy Awards®, 15 Peabody Awards, 6 Golden Globes®, and two Academy Award® nominations. In 2011, Eaton was named one of TIME's 100 most influential people. Her distinguished career has earned her the official recognition of Queen Elizabeth II—with an honorary OBE (Officer, Order of the British Empire). BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Laura Carmichael Lady Edith Crawley in Downton Abbey Lady Edith has been through a lot since the early seasons of Downton Abbey, when she was treated like the ugly duckling of the Crawley clan. She’s been jilted at the alter, had a fling with a married man, and now—unbeknownst to her parents and sister— she’s a mother! Actress Laura Carmichael plays this complex character with charm and vulnerability. A graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, she headlined a 2012 production of Uncle Vanya in the West End opposite Anna Friel and Sam West to critical acclaim, and she will appear in a new film adaptation of Madame Bovary opposite Mia Wasikowska and Paul Giamatti. Carmichael's television and film credits include The Heart of Thomas Hardy, House at the End of Our Street, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, in which she played Sal opposite Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
