Masterpiece Trust 2019 Impact Report.Docx 2019 Impact Report I am delighted to share the enclosed MASTERPIECE Trust Impact Report. Let us look back fondly on MASTERPIECE and the MASTERPIECE Trust’s achievements in 2019. MASTERPIECE enjoyed myriad successes in 2019: the series released its first-ever feature film, The Chaperone, expanded its podcast lineup with Mining Poldark, and published new educational outreach materials, all while broadening its reach in both broadcast and digital spaces. We look forward to celebrating the series’ upcoming 50th birthday with our MASTERPIECE family. Through the generosity of Trust members like you, MASTERPIECE will continue to do what it does best – delivering the finest British drama to the next generation of American viewers – for another half-century! Warmly, Emma Thomas Major Gifts Officer, The MASTERPIECE Trust MASTERPIECE Trust Members Around the Country MASTERPIECE Trust Partner Stations o HPM/Houston o TPT/Twin Cities o KERA/North Texas o VPBS/Vermont o KLRU/Austin o WGBY/Springfield o KPBS/ San Diego o WHRO/Norfolk o KQED/ San Francisco o WNET/New York o KWSU/Washington o WPBT2/South Florida o MPBN/Maine o WPT/Wisconsin o MPT/Maryland o WTCI/Chattanooga o PBS SoCal/Los Angeles o WTTW/Chicago o WUCF/Orlando MASTERPIECE Trust in 2019 2 MASTERPIECE Behind the Scenes MASTERPIECE in the Press Exceptional…it Poise, passion and resounds with heart higher stakes Compellingly dark and twisty … Les Misérables; Victoria Season 3; Mrs. Wilson; The Daily Beast The Telegraph A masterclass in The Boston Globe dodging clichés Unforgotten Season 3; The Independent Its own distinct and sure-footed entity Endeavor Season 6; A story that’s ever more The Guardian A heaping amount of laughter and joy timely and relevant The Press Season 1; The Durrells in Corfu Season 4; The Atlantic Paste Magazine The Boston Globe The Boston Globe 3 New on MASTERPIECE MASTERPIECE was excited to premiere several new series this past year, including: Mrs. Wilson — Golden-Globe winning actress Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre) stars in this three- part drama inspired by the memoir of her grandmother. The series follows Alison Wilson, who thinks she is happily married until her husband dies and a woman turns up on the doorstep claiming that she is the real Mrs. Wilson. Les Misérables — MASTERPIECE and the BBC bring Victor Hugo’s classic novel to the small screen. Led by Dominic West (The Affair) and David Oyelowo (Selma) in the roles of Jean Valjean and Javert, this retelling delves into the many layers of the iconic characters’ cat-and-mouse relationship. Press — A contemporary drama set in the turbulent world of newspapers, this series explores the fortunes of competing broadcast and tabloid papers, and the colorful staff who work for them. Bidding “Farewell” To Fan-Favorites As two of MASTERPIECE’s most popular programs approached their riveting last acts, we said goodbye to various beloved characters as they graced our screens for the final time: Poldark — We welcomed back our dashing leading man for his ultimate ride into the sunset with the fifth and final season of Poldark. Over 40 years after the swashbuckling Ross Poldark first galloped across PBS viewers’ TV screens in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hits, Aiden Turner (The Hobbit) concluded a career-defining performance as the titular hero in the emotional finale of this fan-favorite series. The Durrells in Corfu — Keeley Hawes (Upstairs Downstairs) reprised her role as Durrell family matriarch Louisa for the last season of this popular television series adapted from Gerald Durrell’s autobiography My Family and Other Animals and its two sequels. Known as one of Sunday night’s brightest gems, The Durrells in Corfu was much adored for its lush scenery, joyful sentiment and charming characters. Hawes’s performance was particularly resonant; “Only Mary Poppins could do practically perfect better.” – The Guardian 4 MASTERPIECE’s First-Ever Feature Film MASTERPIECE’s first theatrical release, The Chaperone, premiered at select theaters in September of 2018 before airing on the small screen last March. Reuniting favorites from Downton Abbey, including writer Julian Fellowes and star Elizabeth McGovern, The Chaperone tells the story of Jazz age icon Louise Brooks and her first trip to New York in the 1920s. We were thrilled to be able to welcome Elizabeth to our studios to speak about her film. Here, Elizabeth is joined by WGBH’s own Jared Bowen (host of Open Studio). Teaching History with MASTERPIECE In tandem with the airing of Les Misérables in 2019, the MASTERPIECE Historical Drama Collection on PBS LearningMedia added new and exciting resources to its library. This unique offering pairs videos from our award-winning series with innovative educational tools; teachers have open access to discussion questions, activities, and research assignments that are specifically tailored to help students understand historical events, people, and places. August 2013 ABSTRACT From the late 1970s on, as competition intensified, British broadcasters searched for new ways to cover the escalating budgets for top-end drama. A common industry practice, overseas co-productions seems the fitting answer for most broadcasters; for the BBC, however, creating programmes that appeal to both national and international markets could mean being in conflict with its public service ethos. Paradoxes will always be at the heart of an institution that, while pressured to be profitable, also carries a deep-rooted disapproval of commercialism.

MASTERPIECE TRUST RECEIVES UNPRECEDENTED $1 MILLION DONATION Viewer Supports Favorite Television Series and Local PBS Station Boston, MA, March 28 —MASTERPIECE, the public television drama series that had millions of viewers glued to their seats watching Downton Abbey, has received a $1 million gift from a generous supporter. Darlene Shiley of San Diego, a well-known philanthropist and longtime donor to her local station, KPBS, made the $1 million contribution - the largest gift to date to The MASTERPIECE Trust, a fundraising initiative and partnership between PBS stations that encourages individuals to contribute to the series’ future. Half of Mrs. Shiley’s gift, which is made on behalf of her and her late husband Donald, will go to support KPBS, San Diego. “Darlene’s gift is an absolute affirmation of the purpose of The Masterpiece Trust — to give loyal viewers a way to show their support for our program, while keeping their local public television stations healthy,” says Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of MASTERPIECE, which is produced by WGBH Boston. “She has a true understanding of the value of public broadcasting and we’re incredibly grateful for her gift.” “My late husband and I have been supporters of KPBS for over 20 years," says Mrs. Shiley. "Knowing that our contribution helps MASTERPIECE and my local station is the best example of collaboration I know. That others are joining in the effort gives me hope that appreciation of the arts and culture will remain strong in our society." This is the second gift to The MASTERPIECE Trust from Shiley, who was among the first donors to give to the Trust after it was created in early 2011.

  • A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography
A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography Volume 7 Audio/Visual Materials Alphabetical Listing Compiled by Timothy J. Johnson Minneapolis High Coffee Press 2018 A Holmes & Doyle Bibliography Vol. 7, Audio/Visual Materials, Alphabetical Listing INTRODUCTION This bibliography is a work in progress. It attempts to update Ronald B. De Waal’s comprehensive bibliography, The Universal Sherlock Holmes, but does not claim to be exhaustive in content. New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry. The second volume presents the exact same information arranged by subject. The third volume focuses on the periodical literature of Doyle and Holmes, listing individual articles alphabetically. The fourth volume includes "core" or "primary" citations from the periodical literature. The fifth volume includes "passing" or "secondary" references to Doyle or Holmes in the periodical literature. The sixth volume organizes the periodical literature according to De Waal's original categories. As the bibliography expands, additional annotations will be provided in order to give the researcher a better idea on the exact Holmesian or Doylean reference contained in each article. The compiler wishes to thank Peter E.
