ANNEXURE - I

M/s. Godavari Bio Management proposed to establish Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility of capacity 800 Kg /day in an area of 1.28 acres at Sy. No 258, Marripudi Village, Rangampeta Mandal, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh with capital cost of Rs. 2.2 crore.

Process Description Treatment of Medical Waste The primary methods of treatment and disposal of medical waste are: ¾ Incineration ¾ Microwave ¾ Autoclaves ¾ Irradiation ¾ Mechanical/Chemical Disinfection

Medical Waste Incineration Medical waste incineration involves the burning of wastes produced by hospitals, veterinary facilities, and medical research facilities. These wastes include both infectious ("red bag") medical wastes as well as non-infectious, general housekeeping wastes. The emission factors presented here represent emissions when both types of these wastes are combusted rather than just infectious wastes.

Incineration According to the EPA, 90% of medical waste is incinerated. Incineration is the controlled burning of the medical waste in a dedicated medical waste incinerator. Among industry folks, these units are often referred to as hospital/medical/infectious waste incinerators (HMIWIs). Incinerator of capacity 200 Kg/hr is proposed.

The waste generally passes through the incinerator on a belt, and because most medical waste can be incinerated, the waste is not sorted or separated prior to treatment. Incineration has the benefit of reducing the volume of the waste, sterilizing the waste, and eliminating the need for pre-processing the waste before treatment. The resulting incinerated waste can be disposed of in traditional methods, such as brought to a landfill.

The downside of incineration is potential pollution from emissions generated during incineration. The EPA has stringent requirements on emissions from medical incinerators. The incineration process can be applied to almost all medical waste types, including pathological waste, and the process reduces the volume of the waste by up to 90%. Modern incinerators can provide a secondary benefit by creating heat to power boilers in the facility.

Autoclaves Autoclave of 500 lts, is closed chamber that apply both heat and pressure, and sometimes steam, over a period of time to sterilize medical equipment. Autoclaves have been used for nearly a century to sterilize medical instruments for re-use. Autoclaves are used to destroy microorganisms that may be present in medical waste before disposal in a traditional landfill.

Medical waste that is subjected to an autoclave is often also subjected to a compaction process, such as shredding, after treatment so that it is no longer recognizable and cannot be re-used for other purposes. The compaction process reduces the volume of the treated waste significantly. After treatment and compaction, the treated waste can be combined with general waste and disposed of in traditional manners. Waste that is treated using an autoclave is still recognizable after treatment, and therefore must be shredded after treatment to allow for disposal with general waste. Autoclaves are not recommended for the treatment of pathological waste, because of the appearance of the waste after treatment and the possibility that pathological waste may contain low levels of radioactive material or cytotoxic compounds. One problem with autoclaves is that the process can aerosolize chemicals present in the waste and depending on the design of the autoclave; these chemicals can be released into the air when the autoclave is opened.

ANNEXURE – II: Wastewater Treatment Facilities The effluent generated from the proposed Bio-medical waste treatment facility is mainly from Floor washings, Vehicle washings, Incinerator scrubbers and domestic wastewater. Wastewater from washings and incinerator scrubber are sent to effluent treatment plant and treated wastewater reused for floor washings while domestic effluent sent to septic tank followed by soak pit. Total Effluent generated and mode of treatment is presented in Table A-1.

ANNEXURE – III: Water Balance Water is required for Floor washings, Vehicle washings (10% Hypo solution), Incinerator scrubber and domestic purposes. Total fresh water required for proposed treatment facility is 1.14 KLD in addition to recycled water of 0.25 KLD, 10% Hypo solution for vehicle washings shall be 0.07 KLD. ANNEXURE – V: Stack Emissions Details The sources of air emission expected from the proposed bio-medical waste treatment facility from stand by DG set of 65 KVA and incinerator of capacity 200 Kg/hr. DG set shall be provided with stack height based on the CPCB formula for effective stack height, Scrubbers shall be provided to incinerator before letting out the emissions from

incinerator. The emission rates of PM, SO2 and NOx from each stack are presented in Table A-4.
