Mihailo Arsenski TENOR Mobil 0176 7086 5780 [email protected] www.arsenski.de REPETOIRE The French- Macedonian tenor Mihailo Arsenski made his debut at the Macedonian National Opera in the roles of Alfredo (La Traviata), Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Beppe (I Pagliacci), Camille (Die Lustige Witwe) and Homonay (Der Zigeunerbaron). He obtained the «Artist Diploma» from the Oberlin Conservatory, USA, in the class of Richard Miller and until 2001 was part of the Opera Studio «Centre de Formation Lyrique» at the Paris National Opera. In Paris he performed regularly in concerts and productions at the Amphitheatre of Opera Bastille, including Nemorino (L'Elisir d'Amore), Fenton (Falstaff), Roméo (Roméo et Juliette), coached by Janine Reiss (Opéra de Paris), Robert Kettelson (La Scala di Milano) and Joan Dornemann (Metropolitan Opera, NY). He also sang a number of roles at the Paris National Opera, at the Opéra Bastille and Palais Garnier, including Matteo Borsa in Rigoletto, Abdallo in Nabucco, Uldino in Attila, Gastone in La Traviata, Thibault in Vêpres Siciliennes, Dritter Jude in Salome, Haushofmeister bei Faninal in Rosenkavalier and Solo Tenor in Les Noces by Stravinski, with conductors such as Daniel Oren, Pinchas Steinberg, Gary Bertini, Renato Palumbo, Paolo Carignani, Nicola Luisotti, Ulf Schirmer, Dietrich Henchel, James Conlon, Philippe Jourdain, Vladimir Jurowski, Jesus Lopez-Cobos and Arturo Tamaio. Concerts in Paris at the Opéra Comique, Théatre de Champs Elysées, Salle Pleyel and Salle Gavot. Mihailo took part in the Master Classes with Alain Vanzo, Michel Sénechal and Christa Ludwig. He represented Macedonia at the BBC «Cardiff Singer of the World» 2001 competition. -

N E W S R E L E A S E CONTACT: Katherine Blodgett Director of Public/Media Relations phone: 215.893.1939 e-mail: [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: September 10, 2008 CHARLES DUTOIT BEGINS TENURE AS CHIEF CONDUCTOR AND ARTISTIC ADVISER OF THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA During the 2008-09 season, Mr. Dutoit focuses on the music of Hector Berlioz and works written for the Ballets Russes Highlights of Mr. Dutoit’s first season include Opening Night Concert featuring pianist Martha Argerich, the U.S. premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto grosso No. 1, for three cellos and orchestra, and performances of Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet and Requiem as well as The Damnation of Faust, led by Simon Rattle Mr. Dutoit leads the Orchestra in two Carnegie Hall concerts, one of which is part of a festival celebrating African-American cultural heritage (Philadelphia, September 10, 2008) – In his first season as chief conductor and artistic adviser, Charles Dutoit leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in nine weeks of concerts. Known for his interpretations of French, Russian, and 20th-century music, Mr. Dutoit focuses on the works of Hector Berlioz and pieces written for the Ballet Russes during the 2008-09 season and throughout the next four years. He also leads the U.S. premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto grosso No. 1 for three cellos and orchestra as part of the Orchestra’s celebration of the composer’s 75th birthday. JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity.
