UCSD ensembles to perform on February 20 in Mandeville Auditorium, with guest artists Jeannie Cheatham and Buddy Collette

UCSD JAZZ ENSEMBLES TO PERFORM ON FEBRUARY 20, WITH GUEST ARTISTS JEANNIE CHEATHAM AND BUDDY COLLETTE

Straight-ahead and experimental jazz will be presented in small combo format, when students of the Jazz Ensembles Program of the University of , , and guest artists, perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Mandeville Auditorium.

Tickets are $5 and $3 and may be purchased at the UCSD Price Center Box Office and at the door.

The UCSD Jazz Ensembles Program, directed by Jimmy Cheatham, presents six concerts annually, three in jazz combo format and three in jazz orchestra format. "This concert," Cheatham said, "is part of sharing the campus-wide and national celebration of African American History Month, dedicated to the African Americans who left indelible contributions and legacies to our world."

Special guest artists will be Jeannie Cheatham, vocals and piano; Buddy Collette, reeds; John "Ironman" Harris, drums, and Tony Azzerello, bass viol, performing together in a quartet.

Also performing will be the trio "Interplay," featuring UCSD music department alumni Susannah Martin, voice; Rob Weiss, drums and Joey Carano, guitar.

Bob Boss, lecturer/instructor, will direct the six-piece, UCSD Jazz Guitar Ensemble.

The student group, "Direct Out," a quintet, will be led by guitarist Dave Cook, with Martin Chandler, bass; Eric Hansen, keyboard; Eric Linberg, saxophone, and Brett Sanders, drums.

Drummer Peter Gonzales III will lead a quintet featuring Manfred Hecking, bass; Eric Hansen, piano; Jon Sorenson, alto saxophone, and Chris Lyons, trombone.

The quintet "Jazz Vacation" will be lead by saxophonist Ladd El Wardani, and will feature Geof Land, trumpet; Eric Griswold, piano; Martin Chandler, bass, and Robert Weiss, drums.

"Straight Ahead," led by John Flood on vibes, will feature guest artist Kermit Rosenberg on saxophone, with Martin Chandler on bass, Loie Wheeler on piano and guest drummer Ron Haslem.

The "Jazz Sax Choir," directed by instructor/associate coach Berke McKelvey, will perform with Ladd El Wardani, Scott Delson, Dento Oki, Bob Brannen, Colleen McDonald and Jon Sorenson. "TCB Plus 2" will be led by Craig Dawson, and include Martin Chandler, Mark Applebaum, Ed Felix, Eric Lindberg and Brett Sanders.
