Where: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (Annapolis, MD) Who: Boston Cannons vs. When: Tuesday, July 23, 2020 7:00 PM EST Watch: ESPN+ (LIVE), TSN.ca/TSN App (LIVE), NBC SPORTS BOSTON (11 p.m.)

GAME PREVIEW: Boston Cannons vs. Connecticut Hammerheads

The matchup: For the first time in history, the Cannons will play the Connecticut Hammerheads in their fourth game of the 2020 MLL season.

Cannons Record: 2-1 Last Time Out: The Cannons staged another fourth quarter rally on Tuesday to take down the Barrage, 12-10. Bryan Cole netted a hat- trick and Bryce Wasserman picked up five points on two goals and three assists to lead the team. Nick Marrocco made 13 saves on 23 shots. Boston had a day off on Wednesday. Who to Watch: Kevin Reisman has been very good for the Cannons at the faceoff-X, posting a 61% winning percentage with a 46-for-75 record through three games. On offense, Reilly O’Connor has really emerged with four goals and five points, giving the Cannons the secondary-scoring punch needed in a 10-day tournament.

Hammerheads Record: 1-2 Last Time Out: The Hammerheads picked up their first win in franchise history on Wednesday, beating the 10-8. Goaltender Sean Sconone had a strong game with 15 saves, including a whopping eight stops in the first quarter. Who to Watch: Bradley Voigt stands out because he leads the Hammerheads with nine goals, is coming off a four-goal performance yesterday, and has arguably been their best player.

Analysis: The playoff race has tightened with Denver and Chesapeake clinching two of the four spots for this weekend and Boston can clinch at least third place with a win over Connecticut today, an opportunity the club needs to take advantage of.

For the most part, the Hammerheads have really struggled this season. They were outscored 32-16 in their first two games before beating New York by a slim margin on Wednesday. They have some solid pieces, but just haven’t been able to really click yet. Voigt has been the squad’s best player on offense and beside Sconone in goal, the defense has not been good enough on a consistent basis. One bright spot for Connecticut through three games has been Noah Rak, who’s won 58% of his faceoffs.

The Cannons, on the other hand, slow starts have forced them to come from behind in every game thus far. Tonight’s game gives Boston another opportunity to put together a full 60-minute effort. They were starting to gel a little more by the end of Tuesday’s win over the Barrage, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can pick up where they left off tonight.

Following tonight’s game, the Cannons will play the Outlaws on Friday in a rematch of last year’s semifinals.
