Warrick, Ph.D., Interim President Vice President for Academic Affairs SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY On July 5, 2012, Dr. Cynthia A. Warrick became Interim President of South Carolina State University. Dr. Warrick brings to the position Page 2 > over twenty years of experience in higher education, teaching and administration. Her diverse background in academics, research, and fundraising supports her vision of incorporating a progressive, broad-minded methodology to fostering University success. Prior to joining SC State University, she was a Senior Fellow in the School of Pharmacy, Center for Minority Health Services Research. President for Dr. Warrick has held leadership and faculty positions as tenured full professor of Pharmacy, Finance dean and chief research officer at Elizabeth City State University; associate professor and director of Environmental and Occupational Health at Florida A&M University; and, assistant professor in the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health at the University of Texas School of Public Health, Center for Health, Promotion and Prevention Research. She is the recipient of various honors and awards to include Fulbright Specialist For Global & Public Health; Outstanding Alumna of the Year, George Mason University; Board of Scientific Counselors, CDC National Center for Environmental Health / ATSDR; Rho Chi Honor Society; Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society; and Leadership America. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Warrick received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Howard University; a Master of Science degree in Public Policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology; and a terminal degree in Environmental Science and Public Policy from George Mason University.

Dr. W. Franklin Evans was born in Augusta, Georgia and attended public school in the Jefferson County School System. W. Franklin Evans matriculated at the University of Georgia and Georgia State University earning six degrees in areas ranging from Entomology to Journalism, Middle Childhood Science to Curriculum and Instruction, and Administration and Supervision to Higher Education Administration. His professional career has included working as a medical entomologist, a broadcast and reporter, a flight attendant, a science teacher, a high school assistant principal, a middle school principal, a university professor, a director, a college dean, and university vice president. He holds membership is various organizations Dr. W. Franklin Evans such as the NAACP, Black Family Preservation Group, Inc., National Association of Black School Educators, Partnership for a Drug-free Community, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Toastmasters International, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He has served on the advisory boards of organizations such as the Sickle Cell Association, Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis Clubs International, the AIDS Action Coalition, and the Black Family Preservation Group. Always striving to be a servant leader, he is an active minister with the Church of God in Christ International. Most recently as a higher education administrator, he was employed as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Virginia Union University; and prior to that appointment, he was the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Elizabeth City State University. Dr. Evans has worked as an adjunct professor at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, and Athens State University. With aspirations of one day going to law school and becoming a judge, he spends leisurely time traveling, playing tennis, reading, and singing.

Mrs. Charlene Johnson Director of Athletics Charlene Johnson was named Director of Athletics at South Carolina State University in 2004. The only woman to serve as Athletics Director (AD) at the institution, Johnson is in her 28th year as a member of the department, in which she previously served as senior woman administrator, associate athletics direc- tor and coach. In 2005, she became the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Directors of Athletics Association in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. She has also served on several NCAA Committees and is currently a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee. During her tenure, many of the athletic facilities have undergone major improvements, attendance at contests and revenues have increased significantly and academic enhancement has been strengthened. In 2011, SC State was one of 26 colleges and universities Mrs. Charlene Johnson across the nation earning NCAA certification. Johnson earned both her bachelor’s (1980) and master’s (1987) from SC State.

John Rosenthall, Interim Vice President for Research, Economic Development and Public Service, received a BS in Mathematics from Tougaloo College and Juris Doctorate from George Washington University in Washington, DC. After two years active service in the United States Army, John spent the next seven years in various capacities at the United States Departments of Defense and Energy. John practiced law in the Law Firm of John A. Rosenthall from 1980 until 1984. For years of 1994 and 1995, he served as the Director of Environmental Justice for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Between 1996 and 2003, John managed the Urban Environment Institute at Howard University (UEI), an entity that provided support to various Federal Dr. John Rosentahll agencies including the United States Department of Energy and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. UEI also supported the National Conference of Black Mayors and supported their members economic development efforts. Since 1996, John has provided support to the United States Department of Energy in their environmental justice and Historically Black Colleges and Universities initiatives. In 2006, John founded the Annual State of Environmental Justice in America Conference and has coordinated that event for seven consecutive years. In 2009, the Conference added the Minority Alternative and Renewable Energy Consortium (MAREC) to the agenda. The MAREC was initially designed in collaboration with the United States Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Energy (DOE), small business entities and various academic institutions to help HBCUs and other MSIs gain greater participation in Federal alternative and renewable energy research and procurement activities. The MAREC has now expanded to include the United States Departments of Interior (DOI) and Transportation (DOT), and supports HBCU/MSI efforts to gain greater participation in Federal procurements across the board. John is active in community service having served as general counsel for the Alexandria Branch of the NAACP, Education Committee of the Northern Virginia Urban League, president of the Medical Care for Children Partnership and the John Leland Center for Theological Studies Board of Directors. John is an active member of Alfred Street Baptist Church. Dr. Rita Teal Interim Vice President for Administration Dr. Rita Jackson Teal has held progressive and diverse administrative roles and teaching responsibilities at three institutions of higher education. Titles have included acting president, vice president for academic affairs, executive director of institutional effectiveness, assistant and associate vice president in academic affairs, dean of the school of freshman studies, director of the learning resource center, director of academic support programs, and associ- ate professor of mathematics. Dr. Rita Teal Leadership positions have included the areas of planning, SACS/COC ac- creditation, first-year experience, retention, assessment, admissions and TRIO. She has served on several SACS COC, Title III and TRIO review teams; written several grants, and presented at SACS COC and TRIO conferences and meetings. Dr. Teal was a Kellogg MSI/NAFEO Leadership Fellow, and participant in the Fulbright-Hays South Africa Seminar, Snowmass Institute for Strategic Planning in Snowmass Village, Colorado and the Kellogg Institute for Developmental Educa- tors at Appalachian State University in Boone, . Her teaching discipline is mathematics. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Teal is the mother of daughter Rashel. Previous Page Next Page Mr. Eric Eaton Assistant Vice President for Finance Eric was born and raised in Montgomery, AL. Eric graduated from Howard University in May 1977 with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Business Administration. Following graduation, Eric joined the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young and spent eight years in the firm’s New York and Continental European practice offices. Eric’s professional background in corporate financial management includes experience in publishing (Time Warner, Meredith Corporation, Earl G. Mr. Eric Eaton Graves, Ltd.), financial services (Western Union, NEXXAR Group, Inc.), and information technology (Connotate Technologies, Inc.) Eric is a Certified Public Accountant (New York) and a Certified Management Accountant. Eric is married with three adult children.

Dr. Tamara Hughes Interim Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Tamara Hughes currently serves as Interim Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. She provides leadership and direction to the following areas critical to the student experience: Student Life and Leadership; Judicial Affairs; Residence Life and Housing; Intramurial Sports; Counseling and Self Development; Health Services; and Career Placement and Planning. Under her leadership, these units work in tandem to coordinate and implement programs, activities, and services to maximize student learning and development. She has over sixteen years of experience in higher education and has served in various capacities. She has also provided guidance and worked closely with the Office of Judicial Affairs from 2004 to 2010. Prior to accepting her present position, she served as Research and Planning Dr. Tamara Hughes Administrator in the Office of Institutional Research at the University. Her primary responsibility was assisting units with the development and implementation of assessment plans and programs that encourage continuous improvement and meet standards of accrediting bodies. Dr. Hughes received her BA in Communications from Howard University, Washington, DC; her MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, South Carolina; and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education, from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. Her primary research interest focuses on the career development of the African American student athlete. She co-authored a chapter, Synthesizing career and family theories: Relevant issues in K. M. Evans, J. C. Rotter & J. M. Gold (Eds.), Synthesizing family, career, and culture: A model for counseling in the twenty-first century. She also serves as adjunct faculty and teaches or has taught the following courses: Social Psychology, Child Psychology, and African American Families in the Departments of Social Sciences and Family and Consumer Sciences. Dr. Hughes serves as Co-chair of the University’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Institutional Effectiveness Committee. She has presented a plethora of workshops on assessing student learning outcomes as well as how to assess academic programs. She has also served in the role of assessing the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan, PUSH Writing: Preparing Undergraduates for Scholarly Holistic Writing. She is a member of the Association for Institutional Research, the Southern Association for Institutional Research, and the American Counseling Association. She is committed to public service through her membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and by serving as the Committee Chair of the Services to Youth Facet in the Links, Inc. Dr. Hughes is the proud mother of Jade and Donavon.
