4 THE HCASC STORY In 1989, Honda and the College Bowl Company teamed up to create Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC). The birth of HCASC marked the creation of varsity scholar teams and official academic competitions at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The goal is to support the unique mission of America’s HBCUs and to emphasize the belief that knowledge is our most valuable resource. Knowledge enriches us BY THE personally and opens our eyes, minds and hearts to the possibilities the world NUMBERS presents. It reinforces the ideal behind Honda’s motto, The Power of Dreams. 125,000 Honda’s commitment to HCASC expresses its belief that success isn’t measured Students have competed in HCASC solely by the products we make, but also by the lives enhanced. 10,000 HCASC is an entertaining game of outstanding intellect and quick recall. In Questions are asked each year addition, it reinforces critical life skills: sportsmanship, teamwork, passion, preparedness, striving for success, accepting defeat with dignity and presenting $8,000,000 oneself with style and grace at all times. In HBCU grants from Honda have been awarded through HCASC Our alumni travel the world applying their skill and compassion to every imaginable career and human endeavor. They give back to their alma maters 28 and HCASC by supporting campus activities, mentoring students and becoming HBCUs have won at least $100,000 in institutional grants from Honda global ambassadors for our Friends for Life philosophy. DR. MAKOLA ABDULLAH VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY Dr . Makola Abdullah competed for Howard University in 1990 and at the age of 24, he became the youngest African American in Northwestern University’s history to receive a Ph D. . in engineering .
Before taking the reigns as President at Virginia State University, Dr . Abdullah served in a variety of executive and professorial roles at Bethune- Cookman University, Florida Memorial University, and Florida A&M University . He has spent his entire career inspiring young and promising students to embrace the challenges of ever-changing technologies, keeping pace with the world and seeking transformative change .
42 SPECIAL HONORS ERNEST C. JONES SPORTSPERSON AWARD DJ MEDEARIS - NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL DJ Medearis has thrown himself into the entire HCASC experience . In win-or-lose situations with his team, he showed great poise in interacting with both the team players and the game room officials . He has demonstrated his eagerness to play the game with every fiber of his being . He is already excited about applying for an HCASC volunteer position in the future . DJ is a shining example of what is best about this competition and the students who are a part of it .
COACH OF THE YEAR ROBERT BATTEN - BOWIE STATE Robert Batten goes to extraordinary lengths to train and support the entire HCASC team; helping to create knowledge, continuously building up the team spirit, and making sure all players are competition ready, including having the flyest outfits for the NCT . He instills in the students that everything is done “for the honor ”.
