The method is based on the link of developmental stages of arthropods, especially of blowfly larvae, to their age. The major advantage against the standard methods for the determination of the early postmortem interval (by the classical forensic pathological methods such as body temperature, post- mortem lividity and rigidity, and chemical investigations) is that arthropods can represent an accurate measure even in later stages of the postmortem in- terval when the classical forensic pathological methods fail. The Occurrence of Stalk-Eyed Flies (Diptera, Diopsidae) in the Arabian Peninsula, with a Review of Cluster Formation in the Diopsidae Hans R

Feijen*, Ralph Martin & Cobi Feijen Catalogue and distribution data are presented for the six Diopsidae species known to occur in the Arabian Peninsula: Sphyracephala beccarii, Chaetodiopsis meigenii, Diasemopsis aethiopica, Diopsis arabica, Diopsis mayae and Diopsis sp. (ichneumonea species group). The biogeographical aspects of their distribution are discussed. Records of Diopsis apicalis and Diopsis collaris are removed from the list for Arabia as these were based on misidentifications. Synonymies involving Diasemopsis aethiopica and Diasemopsis varians are discussed. Only one out of four specimens in the D. elegantula type series proved conspecific with D. aethiopica. The synonymy of D. aethiopica and D. varians is rejected. A lectotype for Diasemopsis elegantula is now designated. D. elegantula is proposed as junior synonym of D. varians. A fly cluster of more than 80,000 Sphyracephala beccarii, observed in Oman, is described. The occurrence of cluster formations in the Diopsidae is reviewed, while a possible explanation is indicated. Diana Gallagher Master’s Project for the M.S. in Entomology An Annotated Bibliography of Archaeoentomology April 2020 Introduction For my Master’s Degree Project, I have undertaken to compile an annotated bibliography of a selection of the current literature on archaeoentomology. While not exhaustive by any means, it is designed to cover the main topics of interest to entomologists and archaeologists working in this odd, dark corner at the intersection of these two disciplines. I have found many obscure works but some publications are not available without a trip to the Royal Society’s library in London or the expenditure of far more funds than I can justify. Still, the goal is to provide in one place, a list, as comprehensive as possible, of the scholarly literature available to a researcher in this area. The main categories are broad but cover the most important subareas of the discipline. Full books are far out-numbered by book chapters and journal articles, although Harry Kenward, well represented here, will be publishing a book in June of 2020 on archaeoentomology. -

Abstract A male corpse was found in a park, located in an urban residential area in Taiwan. The insect data collected from this remain shows that there was an unusual insect fauna on the corpse for an outdoor case. There were three features for the entomology study in this forensic case. First, the fauna of the collected insects was more diverse than in other cases. Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart, 1842), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Van Der Wulp, 1883), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794), Sarcophaga dux (Thomson, 1869) and Fannia pusio (Wiedemann, 1830) were found on the corpse. The dominant species was S. nudiseta which is usually found on indoor human corpse. It was the first case of larvae of S. nudiseta and F. pusio found on outdoor human remains in Taiwan. Second, the Minimum Post-Mortem Interval (minPMI) was estimated to be about 10-14 days base on the develop- mental data of three species of fly, including S. nudiseta (pupae), C. megacephala (flies), S. dux (pupae). Third, fly artifacts were found on the body and clothes, and those tiny spots were thought to be blood splatter patterns, which puzzled the investigators and so they were not sure whther it was a suicide case. -

Fannidae), dung flies (F. Scathophagidae) and root maggot flies (F. Anthomyiidae). It is comprised of approximately 7000 described species. The monophyly of the Muscoidea and the precise relationships of muscoids to the closest superfamily the Oestroidea (blow flies, flesh flies etc)e ar both unresolved. Until now mitochondrial (mt) genomes were available for only two of the four muscoid families precluding a thorough test of phylogenetic relationships using this data source. -

Key to the adults of the most common forensic species of Diptera in South America. Flies (Diptera, blow flies, house flies, flesh flies, horse flies, cattle flies, deer flies, midges and mosquitoes) are among the four megadiverse insect orders. Several species quickly colonize human cadavers and are potentially useful in forensic studies. One of the major problems with carrion fly identification is the lack of taxonomists or available keys that can identify even the most common species sometimes resulting in erroneous identification. Here we present a key to the adults of 12 families of Diptera whose species are found on carrion, including human corpses. Also, a summary for the most common families of forensic importance in South America, along with a key to the most common species of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Fanniidae and to the genera of Sarcophagidae are provided. Phylogenetic relationships among the species in this group, as well as the biogeography of these species, are discussed on the basis of a cladistic analysis. Piezura graminicola shanxiensis Xue, Wang and Wu, 1998 is redescribed and elevated to species rank based on comparison of its morphology and phylogenetic relationships. Syllegopterula flava Hsue, 1983 and its replacement name Thricops flavidus Xue, 1998 are treated as junior synonyms of Piezura graminicola (Zetterstedt, 1846). Key words: Piezura, Fanniidae, phylogeny, biogeography, new status, new synonym Introduction Fanniid flies (Diptera: Fanniidae), with 285 species, occur in all zoogeographic regions of the world (Carvalho et al. 2003). Four genera are currently recognized in the family: Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy, Euryomma Stein, Piezura Rondani and Australofannia Pont (Pont 1986). The small genus Piezura is mainly confined to the Holarctic Region and comprises four species and one subspecies (Xue & Wang 1998; Moores & Savage 2005). Moores and Savage (2005) revised the genus Piezura worldwide to resolve a series of long standing taxonomic problems. The comprehensive descriptions and keys of all species by Moores and Savage (2005) are useful for taxonomic studies of the group.
