Centered around a 120-year- old, student-run honor system, a Woodberry education emphasizes intellectual thoroughness and moral integrity. All students live on campus and participate in athletics, the arts, and a wide range of leadership opportunities. The school is located in scenic Madison County, Virginia, and is 75 miles southwest of Washington, DC, and 35 miles northeast of Charlottesville, VA. SELECTED FEATURES • 2020-2021 enrollment: 405 students (95 in senior class). Classes held in person Fall 2020. • Woodberry admission statistics: 51% of applicants accepted for admission – 60% of admitted students enrolled. • Students from 27 states and 28 countries. • 65 teaching faculty – 72% hold advanced degrees, including 10 doctorates. • Average class size is 11, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1. • 100% of graduates attend four-year colleges. • $334.5 million endowment and managed funds; annual fund gifts of $3.7 million; alumni giving rate of 64% • Abroad programs in Central Asia, China, the Galapagos, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, and the UK. • 1200-acre campus includes state-of-the-art facilities for academics, athletics, and the arts. • Accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. GRADES Woodberry Forest calculates an annual grade point average using grades earned in all courses that year. A cumulative weighted GPA is also reported. Students are normally enrolled in five core academic courses each meeting 3 ¾ hours per week. GPA SCALE WEIGHTING SYSTEM MEAN WEIGHTED GPAs (CUM) A = 4.0 C = 2.0 0.1 points are added to the yearlong Class of 2020 Class of 2021 A- = 3.7 C- = 1.7 GPA for each Honors course taken. 11th: 3.47 11th: 3.45 B+ = 3.3 D+ = 1.3 12th: 3.57 B = 3.0 D = 1.0 0.1 points are added to the yearlong B- = 2.7 NC = 0.0 GPA for taking a sixth class. C+ = 2.3 Academic Honors 3.4 and above Woodberry is on a trimester system; first trimester senior grades are considered mid-year grades. CLASS RANK Woodberry Forest School does not rank its students. However, we do include a grade distribution chart with this Profile. Only courses taken at Woodberry appear on our transcript. Our weighted cumulative GPA is calculated using only grades earned while attending Woodberry. Transcripts from previous secondary schools attended are also provided. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS CLASS OF 2020 TESTING RESULTS A minimum of 20 credits is required, including: • 4 in English Middle 50% • 4 in Math (one course beyond Algebra 2) SAT EBRW 640 - 710 • 3 in Foreign Language (through 3rd level) SAT MATH 620 - 730 • 3 in History ACT COMP. 25 - 32 • 3 in Science • 1 in Fine Arts Advanced Placement • 1/3 in Religion Woodberry does not offer AP courses. Students may sit for AP 60 hours of community service required, 30 of which must exams, but they prepare on their own. Many Woodberry students come in direct contact with the individual or group served. take AP exams annually, with roughly 80% scoring 3 or higher. Honors courses carry an "H" label and are considered college-level. Honors Science Thesis Seminar (STS) Seniors with a keen interest in scientific research may undertake an undergraduate-level research course. STS participants do not receive a letter grade. Instead, the course culminates in a thesis project defended before outside experts. Engineering Design Engineering blends math, science, and team-based design thinking. The course is a core offering, and students need instructor permission to enroll.
