11 The Hosts

NSWACT can’t wait to put on the best show for the Youth Girls Nationals. As the hosts of the Championships for the first time they are also keen to extend this to the way they play their 2014 matches. As the rapid growth of the game continues in the region, so does the depth of talent for representative opportunities.

With former AFL star Setanta O’Hailpin leading the coaching team, the style of play should be vastly different from the NSWACT girls than in previous years. O’Hailpin has built a strong network of assistant coaches with a variety of experience to ensure the talents of the team are maximised.

Players ready to shine include:

Alexandra Tegg – plays as a forward or in defence as reads the play well In her second Champs ‘Teggsy’ toured NZ with the Youth Girls in 2013 and keeps improving with every game played.

Jodie Hicks – having played since Auskick Hicks takes on the game similar to NSW’s . Relentless, strong overhead mark, Hicks should delight the local supporters.

Getting former Collingwood player and Talent Manager, , to coach the Youth Girls means Queensland are getting serious! Breeanna Brock now conducts the female talent programs where she’s had great success attracting resources and a genuine interest about female talent development.

Starcevich is one of those getting excited about female football. “This is my first Girls Youth Championships , therefore it’s difficult to know how we compare to the other states,” he said. “We have however had a very thorough preparation period which began back in December 2013, and a number of trial games against local Queensland women’s teams, Starcevich added. “The girls’ commitment to the high performance program based in has been outstanding, with many regularly travelling from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Darling Downs for our sessions. We have a hard working group we believe will represent their state with pride.”

Players set to excite the crowd include:

Ellie Kellock - someone who embraces the physicality of the game, Ellie is relatively new to AFL however her ability to find the football does not suggest this. She is explosive and has great ability to chase down a player.

Shae Gundlach – an AFL Academy 14 member Shae displays sound skills, She is a very composed footballer who seems to have ample time in tight situations where the pressure is high. The coaching staff from SA likens her game to that of Collingwood Captain, Scott Pendlebury.

17 Thunder Devils Developing their Talent

A combination of the best of Northern Territory and Tasmania the Thunder Devils allows for the most talented players from these areas to challenge themselves in a safe learning environment. Drawing on girls from both remote communities and metropolitan areas means the players and coaching staff will only meet the day before they play.

Talent Manager for AFL Tasmania Nick Probert said “it will be an interesting exercise getting the girls to bond and work out our structures when we arrive in Canberra.” There will be no shortage of talent and each team is allowed dispensation to play 18 year olds some who have had previous Championship experience, such as Maddison Smith (Tas).

“We are relying on the experienced girls to provide the on field leadership so they can teach the new players what to expect and how to handle the pace of the games,” Probert commented.

With both the Territory and Tassie growing their player numbers through new competitions there should be no shortage of skilled players.

Head Coach, Natsha Bennett declared,” As the first time the NT have entered a squad for these Championships, I am very excited to be involved and to offer the young Territory talent a chance to show the skills they have. Joining with the Tasmanian squad will provide bonding and friendship to create a strong talented team to really have a go and enjoy this opportunity.”

Players sure to shine are:

Tayla Thorn (NT) – A committed hard player who has great skill in the ruck, and the ability to be very versatile on the field. AFL Acadmey 13 and New Zealand Tour side 2013 she is experienced on a bigger stage.

Darrelyn Puruntatameri (NT)– Maybe a small player, but extremely skilful in the forward pocket and also a quick on baller bursting from packs with her pace.

Maddison Smith (Tas) – her vast experience t top level games should provide very high on field leadership. Passionate and hard at the ball Smith is expected to lead by example.

This year they will be without their Tasmanian injection of players (who have joined wit h NT). Shaun Loughlin again heads the coaching team and believes the girls will be very competitive again.

O’Loughlin said, “the Vic Country girls have prepared enthusiastically for these Championships. We will have about ten girls that played last year in Shepparton and their experience will be invaluable to the rest of the squad.”

He also believes the squad have gelled extremely well and appear to really enjoy each other’s company. “The coaching and support staff have done a tremendous job in bringing the team together and I have no doubt that the Country spirit will again shine through and enable us to be very competitive in all of our games”, he added.

Players to keep a close eye on include:

Lily Mithen - Shannon McFerran medallist from the AFL Academy 14. Lily is a hard working player who has great energy out on the field. She wins plenty of the ball and has a great appetite for the contest.

Bella Ayre –a very competitive player who marks and kicks the ball very well.

Teleigha Saunders – a very creative and hard-working player. Loves to take the game on and is exciting to watch.

21 Vics Chase Five Straight

Having won all four Nationals to date last year’s come- from- behind victory over Western Australia was probably their most satisfying. The Vics had to work harder than ever to overcome an enthusiastic challenge from WA and a stiff 3 goal breeze to gain victory. From that successful team they lose some massive experience with the likes of three time All Australian and 2013 champs best player, Ellie Blackburn, moving from the age group.

Head Coach Wayne Siekman doesn’t see this as an issue. “The Vic Metro team will be one of the most even groups of talent we have assembled in recent times,” said Siekman. He believes he has a hard working team adding,” their willingness to listen and learn is something that will carry them well throughout the week. Western Australia looks the team to beat and we can’t wait for game 1 on Sunday 4th May to kick off our 2014 campaign. It is going to be a strong test and we look forward to all the challenges that lie ahead of us.”

Siekman believes the players who will stand out for Metro will be:

Brittany Bonnici – elite runner, had experience Karly Tapner – strong body, hard and tough at training with TAC Cup side the footy and will not think twice about going in the pre season which has developed her in to win the footy A precise kick who shows further as a footballer and leader. strong leadership on and off the field.

Deanna Berry – promising footballer, shows great courage when she plays the game, is one of the better kicks in the team and she is one of the most professional girls off the field when it comes to recovery.

23 WA Hungry for Success

WA is regarded as the best threat to quelling Victoria’s dominance in female football. They are regularly runners up at Youth Girls and Women’s Nationals but in 2013 they won the 16s Schoolgirls in a victory that both shocked and dented the Vic pride.

Some of the players in that historic title win have stepped up to challenge for a place in the Youth Girls State team. WA retains many experienced members who have come from the losing 2013 side and it was clear they hurt badly after falling short last year.

2013 Football Woman of the Year and Head Coach, says, “we are really looking forward to these championships in Canberra. For me it’s great to have the experience of the 2013 in Shepparton under my belt and we’ve used this to prepare ourselves and make sure WA continue to be really competitive and push for the top spot.

Cowan added, ”we’ve got a great mix of experienced players as well as young girls who are new to the sport and just loving it. They are a passionate group, hungry for success and excited about the challenge that lies ahead.”

Players likely to make an impact are:

Ashley Sharp: An explosive midfielder and clean skills sees Sab as one of the most talented forward who has clean skills and natural U/18’s players in the country. ability to find the footy. Kellie Gibson: Powerful, athletic midfielder who Sabrina Traub: A strong mark overhead and competes for every contest.

25 First Time Woomeras Set to Ignite The Kickstart carnival the Woomeras were selected from was exhilarating. A combination of raw talent, speed and sublime ball handling excited all who viewed the games. Now the squad comes from all corners of Australia to compete as the Woomeras for the first time.

Experienced coach and former AFL player, Chris Johnson takes charge of the most eclectic group of players drawing girls from remote communities as well as bustling cities.

“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to coach the first Woomeras and look forward to the challenge, “ Johnson said. He added, “I can’t wait to see how the girls will cope within the champs. The girls competed in the first Female Indigenous Kickstart Champs back in September of 2013 where their skill and talent saw them be selected in the first ever National Indigenous female team – the Woomeras. I hope to give the girls more of an insight on game sense and football fundamentals.” Johnson believes a real strength of the Woomeras program is not so much about the on field aspect, but more importantly about the off field. “The program is based on 4 key pillars – Decision Making, Communication, Resilience and Identity. These are the elements we will concentrate on.”

The on field guns will come from:

Courtney Hodder (WA) – is your hard at it Leashay Warburton (NT) – the captain of midfielder who wins the tough contested ball, the victorious NT Kickstart team will be an will do all the 1%ers and has a turn of speed. important leadership part of the first team in particular bringing the remote players together. Paige Baksh (VIC) – was a big stand out at Kickstart and can play at both ends of the ground. Has the ability to kick long goals and is full of skill.
