The course has been divided into sessions in which old dolls will be studied by type (images, idols, and early playthings; child, doll, and social realities; wooden dolls; wax dolls; papier mache and composition; china and parian; bisque dolls, cloth dolls; celluloid, metal, leather, and rubber dolls; and doll art in America) in basically the same chronological order in which they achieved popularity in the marketplace (1800-1925). The instructor is urged to employ a variety of teaching strategies in the presentation of the material. A mixture of lecture, slides, show and tell, and much student participation is encouraged. Handouts are provided whichcan be given to students at the end of each session. Brief annotated bibliographies appear at the end of each chapter,as well as a selected bibliography at the end of the course. Thecourse has been designed to introduce the beginning doll collector to the techniques employed in the manufacture of old dolls, to help the novice identify a doll of excellent artistic merit, and to acquaint the collector with some of the better known names in doll making.

    CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Birkbeck Institutional Research Online From maternal instinct to material girl: the doll in postwar Spain (1940s-50s) Jessamy Harvey In The Elue of Things, Neil Cummings and Marysia Lewandowska state that, in a con- sumer culture, 'it is not objects that people really desire, but their lush coating of images and dreams' (2000: 76). What dreams and images are being desired when the longed for object is a child's plaything, such as a doll? The doll is popularly understood as a tool to aid in the formatting of gender, and, as such, primarily given to female children to awaken their maternal instinct. Miriam Formanek-Brunell notes that the study of dolls as cultural objects is overlooked precisely because 'dolls continue to be typically misunderstood as trivial artefacts of a commercialized girl's culture, static representations of femininity and maternity, generators only of maternal feelings and domestic concerns' (1993: 1). Formanek-Brunell proposes that 'dolls, like any other objects of ordinary life, can be seen as "texts"' (1993: 2). Dolls are cultural texts that, once analysed, can shed light on a variety of aspects of culture. However, apart from Miriam Formanek-Brunell's excellent study, contemporary academia seldom trains its eye on this particular object of children's material culture, and when it does, the focus is invariably on an American plastic icon of femininity the Barbie doll.' What gets overlooked is that Barbie represents neither children nor teenagers, but an idealized adult female, whereby we lose sight of the tradition of so-called 'BCbC' dolls which have idealized children from the middle of the nineteenth century.

Robyn Walton “Dolls raise so many issues about the representation and cultural posi- tioning of the feminine in society,” writes Juliette Peers in the “Introduction” to her book The Fashion Doll (Peers: 8). Liz Conor might well have begun her text about feminine visibility by using the same statement, substituting for “dolls” the words “mass media images of women.” “Appearance” and “appearing,” in their multiple meanings, are also key words for both au- thors. Peers’s primary interest is fashionably dressed dolls’ appearance (looks) and appearance (emergence) in the market-place, while Conor elaborates on the emergence of the “new formation of subjectivity” she calls the Modern Appearing Woman in the technologically enhanced ocular field of the 1920s. Discussing these two books in terms of their covers is a temptation not to be resisted since each text is so much about representation. Appropri- ately, a photographic image of a woman or an inorganic 3D representation of a woman occupies each cover. The front of Peers’s book shows a styl- ishly dressed young woman ostensibly adjusting her underwear in the company of an up-to-date doll; the front of Conor’s is occupied by the glamorously painted face of a store display dummy or mannequin.     From Barbie to the Oligarch’s Wife: Reading Fantasy Femininity and Globalisation in Post- Soviet Russian Women’s Magazines Holly Porteous, Swansea University Abstract This article shows how an analysis of fantasy femininity sheds light on how norms of gender, class and national identity reflect global and local cross-cultural currents in post-Soviet Russia. Drawing on a discourse analysis of women’s magazines and in-depth interviews with readers, it shows how, in the globalized post-Soviet cultural landscape, fantasy femininity represents both change and continuity. Feminine archetypes in women’s magazines, from fairytale princesses to Barbie dolls, reflect a wider post-Soviet cultural hybridisation, and show how Western women’s magazines have adapted to the Russian context. Furthermore, the article highlights readers’ ambiguous attitudes towards post-Soviet cultural trends linked to perceived Westernisation or globalisation, such as individualism, conspicuous consumption, and glamour.
