This emergent form of the profile stems from antecedents in journalism, biography, and art, while adapting to a new rhetorical situation: the marketization of university discourse. Through this theoretical framework, universities market their products and services to their consumer, the student, and stories of current students realize and reveal a shift in discursive practices that changes the way we view universities. A genre analysis of 15 profiles demonstrates how their visual patterns and obligatory move structure create a cohesive narrative and two characters. They strategically show features of a successful student fitting with the institutional values and sketch an outline of the institutional identity. -

THELIMITS OF IRONY The Chronillogical World of Martin Arnis' Time's Arrow s a work of Holocaust fiction, Martin Arnis' Time'sArrm is as A, oving and disturbing as it is ingenious; indeed, it is Amis' narrative ingenuity that is responsible for the work's moral and emotional impact. What moves and disturbs the reader is the multitude of ironies that result from the reversal of time- the "narrative conceitn (Diedrick 164) that structures and drives the novel.' In Time'sArrow the normal present-to-future progression becomes the movement from present to past and the normative convention of realistic fiction-the inability to foresee the future- becomes the inability to recall the past. A narrator in Amis' Einstein's Monsters describes the 20th-century as "the age when irony really came into its own" (37) and Time'sAwow is an ironic tour-de-force if ever there was one. The minor and major ironies generated by the time- reversal all follow from the most important effect of the trope- the reversal of all normal cause-effect relations. (The minor become major as the reverse becomes increasinglypmerse.) The irony is structural-formal when the reader recognizes that the novel is an inverted Bihhngsromn- detailing the devolution of the protagonist- and an autobiography told by an amnesiac; but as might be expected, the trope results in an array of more locally comic, and then, grimly dark ironies. Indeed, the work's most disturbing effects are the epistemological and, ultimately, onto- logical uncertainties which are the cumulative impact of the narrative method. -

Themes in Dialogue Worksheet
Dialogue is one of the most dynamic elements of novel-writing. It reveals character, deepens conflict, and shares information. However, did you know that dialogue is also a fantastic way of nurturing a story’s themes? If you closely study what’s being said, you’ll find that the message being delivered is often as memorable as the speaker’s words and emotions. How can you let your story’s themes shine through in your dialogue without making them too obvious? That’s what the Themes In Dialogue Worksheet is for! It includes three activities that will help you determine how well your story’s dialogue reveals literary themes through conversation basics, emotional subtext, and repetition. This worksheet is based on the activities in my DIY MFA article “Developing Themes In Your Stories: Part Four – Dialogue.” Click here to read the article before continuing. Instructions: Print out a copy of this worksheet, and have either a print or electronic version of your WIP available for selecting dialogue excerpts to use in the following activities. 1. Dissect Your Dialogue Using the Four Basics of Conversation Purposeful dialogue consists of four conversation “basics” that can be dissected as follows: a) Topic: What is the subject of the dialogue, or of the chosen excerpt from a longer conversation? b) Details: What questions do the participating characters ask? What information is revealed? c) Opinions: What points do the participating characters make in favor of or against the topic? How do other characters receive those opinions? d) Themes: What high-level concepts emerge from the dialogue? In other words, what are the characters really talking about? Chances are, the first three “basics” will be revealed directly through dialogue. -

For them, uniformity is essential; for the motion picture, originality is important. The conflict between the two qualities is a major problem in Hollywood. hortense powdermaker1 A screenplay writer, screenwriter for short, or scriptwriter or scenarist is a writer who practices the craft of screenwriting, writing screenplays on which mass media such as films, television programs, comics or video games are based. Wikipedia In the documentary Dreams on Spec (2007), filmmaker Daniel J. Snyder tests studio executive Jack Warner’s famous line: “Writers are just sch- mucks with Underwoods.” Snyder seeks to explain, for example, why a writer would take the time to craft an original “spec” script without a mon- etary advance and with only the dimmest of possibilities that it will be bought by a studio or producer. Extending anthropologist Hortense Powdermaker’s 1950s framing of Hollywood in the era of Jack Warner and other classic Hollywood moguls as a “dream factory,” Dreams on Spec pro- files the creative and economic nightmares experienced by contemporary screenwriters hoping to clock in on Hollywood’s assembly line of creative uniformity. There is something to learn about the craft and profession of screenwrit- ing from all the characters in this documentary. Faris Reflecting the paradoxical nature of its title, magical realism is a complicated term to define and to apply to works of art. Some writers and critics argue that classifying texts as magical realism essentializes and exoticizes works by marginalized authors from the latter part of the twentieth-century, particularly Latin American and postcolonial writers, while others consider magical realism to be nothing more than a marketing label used by publishers. These criticisms along with conflicting definitions of the term have made classifying contemporary works that employ techniques of magical realism a challenge. My dissertation counters these criticisms by elucidating the value of magical realism as a narrative mode in the twenty-first century and underlining how magical realism has become an appealing means for representing contemporary anxieties in popular culture. To this end, I analyze how the characteristics of magical realism are used in a select group of novels and films in order to demonstrate the continued significance of the genre in modern art. I compare works from Tea Obreht and Haruki Murakami, examine the depiction of adolescent females in young adult literature, and discuss the environmental and apocalyptic anxieties portrayed in the films Beasts of the Southern Wild, Take iii Shelter, and Melancholia. -

Rowling's Harry Potter series. Librarians and others who recommend books to youth are having a difficult time suggesting other fantasy books to those who have read the Harry Potter series and want to read other similar fantasy books, because they are not as familiar with the youth fantasy genre as with other genres. This study analyzed a list of youth fantasy books and compared them to the books in the Harry Potter series, through a breakdown of their fantasy elements (i.e., fantasy subgenres, main characters, secondary characters, plot elements, and miscellaneous elements) .Books chosen for the study were selected from lists of youth fantasy books recommended to fantasy readers and others that are currently in print. The study provides a resource for fantasy readers by quantifying the elements of the youth fantasy books, as well as creating a guide for those interested in the Harry Potter books. It also helps fill a gap in the research of youth fantasy. Rereading the American Short Story
The Explorative Value of Computational Methods: Rereading the American Short Story Stephanie Siewert and Nils Reiter ABSTRACT This article explores the use of computational methods to study stylistic and content shifts of the nineteenth-century short story. It is generally assumed that the modern American short story somehow represents the democratic discourse of the United States. This paper argues that an explorative computational approach can help us to reconsider the connections between the textual patterns of the short story and U.S.-American modernity. We offer a critical, digital perspective on the distribution of certain indicative linguistic features across 123 short stories from 1840 to 1916. We used methods from computational linguistics to automatically anno- tate the texts with various linguistic properties (named entities and direct speech, for instance). The quantitative results of automated text processing are presented against the backdrop of the major social, economic, and cultural developments of the time. Our findings provide further insights on the tensions between processes of individualization and economic dependencies dur- ing the nineteenth century, especially with respect to the publishing industry. In addition, we propose that the more experimental nature of a macro-analytical perspective can direct our attention to texts or groups of texts that remain underestimated as to their literary value or exemplary nature for a certain topical, structural, or linguistic pattern. In this vein, the article offers a close reading of Thomas Bailey Aldrich’s short story “Mademoiselle Olympe Zabriski,” which features an above-average number of proper names within the corpus. When re-read in the light of quantitative results, we see the text comment humorously on 1870s class issues in New England.
