Hazard Incidences in , June 2021

Overview of Hazard Incidences in July 2021 In July 2021, 15 different hazards took place across Bangladesh i.e. Covid-19 pandemic, Lightning, Fire, Building collapse, Boat capsize, Landslide, Flash flood, Riverbank erosion, Heavy rainfall, Embankment collapse, Earthquake, Waterlogging, Bridge collapse, Wild animal attack, and Tornado respectively. The most devastating Covid-19 affected newly a total of 339,358 persons across the country among which 6,227 persons died and 262,570 persons recovered in July 2021. Lightning was another severe hazard in terms of the death of 15 people and injury of 5 people, occurring in 11 districts. NDRCC reported a total of 306 Fire incidents throughout the country. However, from NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 22 fire incidents were found in which 79 people died and 32 people were injured. Building collapse took place in 8 districts where 8 died and 6 were injured. In 6 districts 6 people died and 8 people went missing due to Boat Capsize. Besides, 12 persons died and 10 were injured due to landslide in Cox’sBazar. 22,800 families were affected in and 58,000 people were waterlogged in due to Flash flood. Riverbank erosion took place in 10 districts with huge losses of lives, properties, crops, and croplands. Moreover, Heavy rainfall resulted in the death of 3 and 3 went missing in Cox’s Bazar district and caused severe communication disruption and huge loss of croplands. An Embankment collapsed in where 9 villages were fully inundated & leaving 120 families affected. One incident of Earthquake was felt across 64 districts of the country. 7 incidents of waterlogging occurred in 5 districts. In total, 45,000 people became waterlogged, 42 villages inundated and 11 houses were damaged. Bridges collapsed in 4 districts. In Chattogram district One person died in a Wild animal attack. Moreover, Faridpur witnessed Tornado, where 5 people were injured.

Description of Hazard Incidents in July 2021 Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh The increasing number of transmissions from the Delta variant of COVID-19 has exacerbated the current situation of Bangladesh. Throughout July Bangladesh experienced high impacts of COVID-19 across the country, especially a rapid surge in border areas. The number of newly identified patients with Covid-19 was 339,358 which is 3 times larger than the previous month. 262,570 persons recovered and 6,227 persons died which broke all the records of past months. From the very first case identified on March 8, 2020, the total number of Covid-19 patients is 1,252,616 among which 20,730 persons died and 1,078,820 persons recovered up to July 31, 2021. Confirmed Case Recovered Case Death

Lightning 11 incidents of lightning took place in 11 districts across the country, which killed 15 persons, and injured 5 people. The affected districts are namely , Meherpur, , , Netrokona, Lalmonirhat, Natore, Joypurhat, Kishoreganj. and is the worst affected with death of 4 separately. Fire From NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 306 fire incidents were found in which 79 people died, 32 people were injured and 51 shops, 151 houses, 1 factory, 2 deep freezes, and 1 ICU burnt due to fire throughout this month. The estimated loss was 10 core 7 lakhs. (See Annex-2 for Upazila wise details).

Building collapse A total of 7 Building collapses occurred in 8 districts i.e. Gaibandha, Madaripur, Narshingdi, , Jhalokhati Cox’s bazar, Nilphamari, and sunamganj districts in June. In total 7 people died and 6 were injured. 1 district bungalow and an under construction building collapsed this month. See more details in the table below:

Boat capsize 10 Boat capsize events took place in In 8 districts i.e. Sunamganj, Noakhali, Munshiganj, Bhola, Sylhet, Chattogram, Pirojpur, and espectively in the month of July. 6 people died and 8 people went missing due to Boat capsize. Landslide 6 incidents of landslide took place in 3 districts of the country in July. 12 people died and 10 were injured in Cox’s Bazar district. An under construction house and 6 shops were damaged in Chattogram district in several events. The details are given in the table below :

Flash Flood 3 incidents of flash flood have been reported in different regions of the country. Flash flood in Mymensingh affected 22,800 families of 16 unions in two , Dhobaura & Haluaghat(Source: NDRCC Report July 2, 2021). In , a sudden flood affected Rangpur district where 5 unions flooded leaving 10,000 people affected and 500 families of Gangachara Upazilas in Rangpur became waterlogged (Source: prothomalo.com July 9, 2021). Moreover, 58 thousand families became waterlogged in total 12 upazilas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Gaibandha. (Source: ittefaq.com July 10, 2021). Riverbank erosion Riverbank erosion affected with huge loss of lives, properties, croplands as well as crops in 10 districts i.e. Jamalpur, , Sherpur, Rajbari, Lalmonirhat, Bogura, Madaripur, Munshiganj, Faridpur and Kurigram. 500 households and 1000 acres of land went into river in (Source: ittefaq.com July 5, 2021). 4 houses and one square km cropland melted away into the river in due to riverbank erosion (Sources: prothomalo.com July 24, 2021). In kurigram 400 families became displaced (Source: dhakatribune.com July 7, 2021). In tangail, 27 houses washed away into river and 20 km road eroded which disrupted the communication in . Heavy rainfall Heavy rainfall occurred in 11 districts i.e. Noakhali, Cox’s Bazar, Satkhira, Bagerhat, chattogram, Barguna, , Netrokona, Naogaon, kurigram and districts which resulted in a severe communication disruption, huge loss of croplands & fish, making people waterlogged, embankment damaged, death and injured people etc. (See Annex-3 for more details). Embankment collapse Embankment collapse took place in Feni district on 1st July where Communication disrupted in Feni-Parshuram road, 2 villages were fully inundated & 70 families were affected in parsuram upazila while 7 villages and 50 families were affected in .(Source: prothomalo.com July 1, 2021).

Earthquake An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude felt across the country on 7 July, 2021. No impact was recorded (Source: prothomalo.com July 7, 2021).

Waterlogging 7 incidents of waterlogging occurred in 5 districts i.e. Barishal, , Bogura, Bhola and Cox’s Bazar . In total, 45,000 people became waterlogged, 42 villages were inundated and 11 houses damaged due to heavy rainfall throughout the month of July. Rupsha and Ghatbari road fully damages in and 150 meter of diabetic point eroded in the sea in Cox’s Bazar district . Details are given below:

Wild Animal Attack Wild animal attacked in Rangmati district, on 19 th July where 1 Buddist mode died. (Sources: prothomalo.com July 19, 2021).

Tornado An incidence of a tornado was reported at Banga upazila in on 29 July, 2021 where 5 people were injured, 30 families were affected and 15 trees uprooted (Source: bdnews24.com July 29, 2021).

GoB Response in July 2021 Response to Covid-19 up to July 31, 2021 The government managed to vaccinate 1st dose of covid-19 vaccines to 8,806,075 people starting from January 27, 2021, to July 31, 2021. From April 08, 2021, to June 30, 2021, a total of 4,339,386 2nd doses vaccines were administered. However, 16,222 general beds, 1,317 Intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 27,972 Oxygen cylinders, 1,881 high flow nasal cannula, and 2,088 oxygen concentrators are used for covid treatment in the hospitals across the country up until July 31, 2021, reports in dedicated government website for covid-19. To provide support as a humanitarian assistant in bordering areas and other countryside due to the covid-19 surge, MoDMR has allotted both cash and dry food this month. More details are below: DGHS and IEDCR have opened up hotline numbers (i.e. 16263, 333, 10655, 01927711784, 01927711785, 01937000011, and 01937110011) for consultation with doctors through phone calls which already have attended 2,68,79,816 phone calls.  5450 metric ton GR rice and 7 crores one lakhs tk was allocated as humanitarian assistance in 64 districts  800 metric ton GR rice and 4 crore tk were allocated for 12 city corporations.

Response to Fire The government responded to only one incident of fire on 8 July, Narayanganj district .  100,000 tk was allocated for the victim family and 75,000 tk was distributed for 3 dead persons and 70,000 tk among 10 injured person (Source: NDRCC report, July 14, 2021). Response to Lightning In 3 districts, the government allocated and distributed a total of BDT 100,000 to the dead’s families and BDT 5,000 to the injured in July, 2021.  20,000 tk provided to demise family in Naogaon Sadar upazila for 1 July linghtning incidence.  5000 tk provided to injured family and 20,000 tk to demise family for the incidence on 17 July in Netrokona.  Total 60,000 tk provided to 3 demise families for 19 July lightning incidence in Dhamoirhat upazila, Naogaon. Response to Landslide  20,000 tk was provided for demise person’s family on 28 July, 2021 incident in Cox’s Bazar district, maheshkhali Upazila (Source: prothomalo.com July 28, 2021).  150 Metric ton GR rice, 2000 packets dry food and 10,00,000 tk was allocated for the event on 29 July in Cox’s Bazar district and 25,000 tk was provided for each demise family (Source: NDRCC, 1 August 2021). Response to Flash Flood  10 metric ton GR rice was distributed in Mymensingh districts on 2 July, 2021 (NDRCC, 2 July 2021) Response to Riverbank erosion  630 kg rice was distributed among 42 families in , Goaland upazila for the event on 14 July, 2021.  2500 GO bags were dumped to prevent erosion of Jamuna River in Lalmonirhat . (prothomalo.com July 15, 2021).  50 lakhs tk allocated to dump GO bags to prevent riverbank erosion in Cox’s Bazar district Response to Waterlogging  10 metric ton of rice was allocated for the incidence on 25 July in cox’s Bazar district.  150 metric ton GR rice was allocated for the incidence on 28 July in cox’s Bazar district. Response to Heavy Rainfall  72 ton GR rice allocated for Cox’s Bazar district for the event took place on 28 July (prothomalo.com July 28, 2021).  3400 packets of dry food was distributed in Cox’s Bazar district in response to the incidence on 30 July (prothomalo.com July 30, 2021). Embankment Collapse  30,000 tk was distributed for purchase dry food in Feni district on 2 July.  570 packets of dry food were distributed in Feni district on 4 July, 2021.

Conclusion A total of 15 hazards took place this month with multiple casualties of life and assets across the country. These incidents caused a huge loss of lives and properties and disrupted daily activities. Govt. took initiatives to minimize the losses and also undertook necessary steps to provide support to the distressed people.
