From Piecemakers to all of our dear friends (our customers) we sincerely pray that 1985 be a year of peace and new horizons, new friends, new health and yes — a truly NEW Year. Most of you probably know by now that Piecemakers is moving to a new Home right across Adams in the beautiful Heritage Bank building. 1985 will bring new services, new classes, new added space and an ever renewing of our appreciation for our customers, teachers and the opportunity to serve. We hope to make our new home — your new home with added services to help all of you make your house a home. We hope also that besides adding new services, all of you will feel free to come and chat — have a cup of coffee — or just sit and rest — and that Piecemakers becomes your home away from home. Old PIECEMAKERS will close its doors DECEMBER 31, and the doors to our new Piecemakers home will open January 7 at 10:00a.m. The old familiar Piecemakers faces will be there, and you’ll see more and more of our robust, grass roots tiling men. We’re also closing our tiling-tole store on Mesa Verde East, and the two stores are becoming one. So all of you who had to run across Mesa Verde East to say “Hi” to Judy – Trish – Marj – Kris – Carol – Kerry or Debbie — or talk to one of the men about tole or tiling — it all can take place at our new home — 1720 ADAMS.

DEAR FRIENDS, I surely look forward to these little chats with you who are so much a part of what is happening at Piecemakers. We had another big unexpected expansion. We now have three really cozy, spacious classrooms upstairs — one room filled with class samples. It’s great that God sometimes forces us into things we would hesitate to do. The cards and flowers had to come out of the entrance, so we put them in the big classroom downstairs. That gave us no choice but to get more room. Then we took the “glass” classroom and changed it into a “Country Kitchen”. If you want the most unique in “country”, visit our Kitchen! You’ll find jams and jellies in the cutest jars, homemade mustard made by the cooks at Piecemakers, and we’ll soon have a line of dried dinners (soups, breads and cakes) bundled cleverly in calico prints. Our men are truly “wonder men” with their furniture, tole and tiling. Wish we could share the letters and phone calls we get commending them on their excellent workmanship. Watch for the opening of a showroom on LOGAN STREET displaying their work. Sorry to say our Bed and Breakfast is “on the shelf”, but God knows the desire of all our hearts and the need there is, and in His timing something will break so we can meet that need. So many people come from such a distance that sleeping right at Piecemakers would be ideal. Do you know we have customers in other countries who make Piecemakers a “must” on their list of “places to visit” when in the States? Please remember us in your prayers. 8 January — March 1986 Letter Dearest Friends, It’s January, 1986, and we’ve been in the new store a year! We’ve grown — storewise — and also as God’s children. We have met so many new friends, and our old steady customers seem closer knit to us than ever. In the next year I expect some wonderful changes. It seems like we’re “over the hump” — not just Piecemakers, but those people weary of the “high life” of America are finding a cozy, warm place in Father’s heart — finding shelter under His wing — a refuge from that spirit of the world called the human “rat race”. We pray that God’s cover over Piecemakers will become more and more a refuge for the people — not only when in the store, but also that your homes and families come under His protective covering. We’re still hoping somehow, some way, that God sees fit to change the minds of the “powers that be” and we get a Bed and Breakfast here in Costa Mesa. In the meantime, we are buying a beautiful mountaintop in Julian and will be putting up a Piecemakers Store and Bed and Breakfast there. As God leads, we are following. He wants a refuge for His people — a place to go and enjoy His beautiful creation, unveil creative talents and bask in His protective presence. We have land to clear and buildings to put up. If anyone wants to help, please let us know! It’s amazing — the new ideas being birthed by the people. Check our calendar for new and different classes and demonstrations. What happened to those who were lowly of heart? Who came to this land to get a new start? I loved them, blessed them — did all that I planned, But when they grew rich, they forgot Who I AM. Dear Friends, It is time once again to greet all of you who are dear to us here at the store, and give you a little of the behind-the- scenes activity. You will begin to see Piecemakers patterns (applique, tole, cross stitch, and stuffed animals) in “grass roots stores” all over the world. the patterns will be simple and easy to do, and exquisite and wonderful to warm our hearts. Another big leap of faith for us — we are going to have an abundant line of wholesale items for the small “cottage industries” that cannot afford the usual $100 and $200 minimums. We will have a walk-in wholesale store on Logan Street. Just a few of the articles we will carry are #12 quilting needles we are having specially made, wreaths, many notions, gifts, ribbon, brass, baskets, flowers, and many more articles. This will not be open to the public but to the small businesses, decorators, etc., who carry a resale number. It seems there is so much on the drafting board here at the country store, but lack of finances keeps us from accomplishing what we feel is God’s will. it would be so much easier if He gave us the money and then put it on our hearts what to do with it. But then — how would we become people of faith? Our Julian Bed and Breakfast is also on hold. If we could move in our own timing and according to our will, I’m sure everything would be rolling smoothly; however, again, all will come about in His perfect timing. Look for two books to be out by April — Calico Braided Rug Handbook and Hearts from the Prairie book. And by September, our cookbook should be out... Poor old cookbook... gets shelved continuously because of other priorities! After visiting Taiwan, I am convinced God has His people all over the world. We met gracious Chinese people who have become part of our family. They received us as we receive Christ, and they made us part of their lives. People there are also being forced to change. There is great division in families as some members of the family are turning to the Western way and others are trying to keep the status quo. Dear Friends, Is it just because I’m getting old, or is time speeded up to such a degree that it seems it soon will give way to eternity? Summer — cookouts, beaches, vacations — they’re all here again after a much too short winter season. And by the time a new schedule comes out, fall will be here. So let’s cover what is going on now and later this summer at Piecemakers. On the Fourth of July, we’ll have our annual barbeque with music, cloggers and just simple fun for all. What a good time we all had last year! Don’t miss this event!! Piecemakers’ books and patterns are well “on their way”. To date, we have four books and seventeen patterns being distributed throughout the United States and some going to New Zealand and Australia. Ladies, have you had trouble with sewing needles? By the end of July, we will carry our own top quality needles under the Piecemakers name. Watch for them to be carried here at the store and then across the country. We also have top quality ribbon coming in an array of colors which will sell for 20¢ a yard. And wreaths — evergreen and grape stake — will be the cheapest in town at good quality. As we start wholesaling, we hope to pass our lower prices on to you. Recently we had a tour go through the store. What a bustle of excitement! What fun to meet our friends! And they all enjoyed it so much. Are any of you interested in bringing some friends or clubs through our store? We have vans to pick you up and can provide a picnic lunch outside under our trees. We could have demonstrations also. Think about it for those summer guests coming to visit from the East. The tour will be something different and the fee will be nominal...... And don’t forget, we have rooms for rent for club meetings. Thirty-five dollars for two hours includes coffee or tea and a demonstration of some kind. Oh, yes, Piecemakers tries to keep abreast with the latest in fine fabrics. The world seems to be getting smaller and smaller as God’s people (through much shaking) are coming together. Our latest shipment of fabric is from Japan. How technology has improved in that country! Come see the prints. They are beautiful for quilts, rugs and clothing. Seems I’ve chatted long enough. Before I close, one more thought — Labor Day we will be open and we hope to have homemade ice cream if we can get enough freezers. If you have a freezer we could borrow, let us know. October — December 1986 Word HEAR YE, HEAR YE, OH PEOPLE OF AMERICA! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE GOD. Father is calling us to come back home. October — December 1986 Letter DEAR FRIENDS, The store’s been a-humming with activity as more and more people from all over the country and New Zealand and Australia are becoming an extension of our family here at Piecemakers. The Lord seems to be doing a hidden work of uniting while the “arts and crafts” is the outer manifestation of it. Whatever is happening, it is wonderful, and we appreciate every one of you. His family surely is made up of people and not of things. By October we will have an old-fashioned “candy store” in Piecemakers. If you’re part of our family, you love to eat. Have you tasted our “Wunder Bars” and homemade fudge and cookies? They truly are “wunderbar”! If you would like the recipes, send a self-addressed stamped envelope or pick one up at the store. In our candy store will carry all the old nostalgic candies that will remind you of your youth (if you are over 40), and the young folk will delight in the new fresh taste and novelty. Have you been upstairs to see our wallpaper books? Wallpaper transforms a house and gives it that warm, cozy touch. Our books are fresh and new, and Anne and Norma are usually on hand to help you decide on color and patterns. Expect '87 and '88 to be years of reunion and blessing for the people of God who are anxious for the unity and willing to be humbled — a time when sorrow will be turned to joy for some and joy turned to sorrow for others, so we all might come into the unity of one Body. Through it all, we've grown stronger in our trust and love for Christ and an appreciation for all of you who are so a part of our lives. Wow! Never knew preparing a cookbook took so many hours of diligence and labor. Our book is birthed — all of your recipes wonderfully put together with comments, scriptures, whimsical illustrations and love. Its twin will come forth some time in '87. We had so many recipes that we took out all of ours who work at Piecemakers and will bring them out in Volume 2. The book retails for $18.95, plus shipping. It is a real collector's item. Don't fail to order yours. Now, let's see — What else is new at Piecemakers?... Guess what!! The men are becoming instructors — an answer to your suggestions. John will have woodworking classes where you will learn how to use tools, saws, etc., and construct simple and complex pieces of tole and furniture. Steve will have tile classes — instructions in how to lay tile — and Chuck will teach you how to mat and frame pictures and needlework without investment of expensive tools. On January 10, we're having our regular open house with all its inviting festivities; however, this time we're having it include the "early birds". Tea, coffee and light brunch will begin at 8:00am and last until 11:00am. The "early bird" classes and the men's warehouse classes are a tremendous success. We all love you people who are so ready to try something new. Watch for the expansion at the warehouse on Logan Avenue. We intend to have a perpetual "sale table", also a new concept in retail/wholesale buying.A lot of the items sold at the store will be sold at the warehouse at reduced prices if bought by 3's, 6's, etc., or by volume. There will be fresh,new ideas for creating your own decorating items. This should be ready by the middle of April or early May. Watch for our grand opening. We also hope the woodworkers will have the time to make available a nice selection of reasonably-priced wood furniture. If you haven't been to our warehouse, there is parking in the back, and activity inside the doors. Jim Dick has been a pleasant addition to the woodworkers. His familiar face always makes you feel good, like a good neighbor friend who is always there when you need him. Jim is Laurel Koelsch's dad, one of our teachers. Welcome aboard, Jim. And then there is steady, faithful Sylvia, who is the mother of "The Doll That Ma Made." She keeps Piecemakers' production line flowing. She has been with us for some time. We just wanted you all to know we appreciate her, as well as our little Hmong friend, Ka Ying. And, of course, we appreciate the fifty-some teachers who are always full of fresh ideas and willing to cooperate with any new suggestions. And the, of course, all of you dearest people. 26 July — September 1987 Letter Dear Friends, Hello once again. We all consider this a very special privilege to just chat with you every three months. Thank you all for your kind prayers, letters and calls as we at Piecemakers continue to lay down our lives and pioneer through spiritual powers as we find our way back to our precious Creator. As you all know by now, our first priority is our obedience to God, making Piecemakers a tabernacle for Him, and secondly, attending the store so His people can partake of His presence and also tap their own creativity. A lot of new things are bursting forth at Piecemakers. First off, hip, hip, hurray! Our Julian dream is becoming a reality... and as usual, not the way we expected. We purchased a house where we can begin to have “pajama party” weekends of classes, walks in the woods, and smell the bacon frying. Well, there is much more. We will provide the transportation for a weekend of classes in Julian. Call and ask for Kathy or Joanna or any of us for further information. The Ketchersides in Julian have been most gracious and helpful getting us situated. They also have a fun “Bed and Breakfast” in Julian. Have you visited our warehouse village? Please make this your own delightful experience. Reduced prices for quantity buying and a large year-round sale table make this a unique experience. You’ll see the men and women at work in the village stores... furniture making, wood for the classes being cut in our woodshop, pictures being matted and framed in our matting shop... Carol, Marilyn and Deborah busy making books and calendars... bag machine cranking out plastic bags, shipping and receiving, and oh, yes, if you come on the right days, you’ll see little Leigh Ann toddling up “the street”. Have you seen our new ribbon imported from France? It is wired, and is so beautiful and different from any other ribbon we’ve ever seen. How many of you have tried our candies? We will be getting several new lines — fine chocolates, some made locally and some imported. There is nothing better than a little “lift of energy” to keep your hands busy far into the night. We will also be starting spinning classes and will have spinning wheels for sale soon. Talk about “back to basics”! Fourth of July “Festival of Booths” will be a special time for all members of the family. See the original creations of local talent for sale in individual booths. Valerie will be there with her miniature pony and pony rides, compliments of Torelli Realty! The Yankee Doodle Dancers from Linda’s Dance Studio of Costa Mesa are earning their way to Russia and will entertain us with their creative dancing. October — December 1987 Letter Dear Friends, Truly these are the best of times and the worst of times. If we have the heartbeat of God’s people, your summer was much like ours here at the store - great personal upheaval, financial belt tightening, enemies trying to snuff out our very light, and yet more than ever before, we see a light at the end of the tunnel. New horizons seem to be opening up both spiritually and otherwise. That wonderful awareness that in the very midst of our distress and poverty, God reigns and will bring us through our terrible crisis — not by having us escape, but by allowing the circumstances to change and strengthen us and depending more than ever upon Him. We have so many new faces in the store who are always excited and thrilled that Orange County is blessed with a unique place like Piecemakers. We thank God for that and also we thank Him for our old, steady, dear friends who are always there, loyal and supportive. Now... please get your Piecemakers 1988 “TIMES AND SEASONS” calendar early. It has won an award for its uniqueness, and I’m sure it will be a keepsake. The patterns in it will help you make a quilt or wallhanging. What a nice Christmas gift for that special friend! We hope that the Piecemaker calendar will eventually be like the old almanac, one in every home in America. Our cookbook is also a keepsake — one you’ll want to read and reread. The recipes are all tested and have been proven by our customers, who submitted them to our store. ATTENTION BOUTIQUERS! 31 January — March 1988 Letter GREETINGS ONCE AGAIN DEAR FRIENDS, 1988 has arrived and all of us who have made it through the testings of ‘87 surely will find ‘88’s challenges that much easier. There will be a real drawing together of God’s people this year as the darkness gets ever greater. “Let the heathen rage and the nations imagine a vain thing” (Psalm 2). God is shaking and shaking ‘til only His Kingdom remains. Now, if ever, we cling to Him and seek refuge with people walking with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. Our families will be torn that He may heal the deep sickness in the natural man. Let us let go of anything that stands between us and God. We are living in an idolatrous nation. Lord, forgive us and cleanse us of our hidden idols — be it religious traditions, family or possessions, or just our old nasty self — Lord seek it out and cleanse us. Nothing keeps the “ho-hum” of the winter season from entering in like working with our hands. Creating a quilt, a wreath for the wall, making a doll, or whatever. Surely our Father being a Creator, has placed within His children that desire to create and also that same satisfaction that He felt after each day of creation when He saw that it was good! Fifty booths provided an opportunity for crafters to market their creations. Food and music and a most friendly exciting feeling filled the atmosphere. Our next Fair will be MARCH 18th & 19th, and if the response is as we anticipate, we hope to have a fair each month with new and old crafters. Expect this festivity to grow, first locally, then nationally and then internationally. Dearest Friends, Did 1988 come in like a whirlwind in your life? The more I talk to people.... I mean really talk, not just Dick- and-Jane talk, the more I see God at work — destroying an old order of life and bringing in a new order. Oh, that we may have that grace to cling to Him and change with the changing of the age. As all in Adam must die, so all in Christ will live, with God as our Father. Help us to yield to the death of the cross. What’s new at Piecemakers? The Lord has been nudging me to have weekly seminars on “Walking with God”. The Lord spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11). Abraham knew many facets of the living God. Jacob saw God face to face (Genesis 32:30). Peter, James, John and Paul heard His voice audibly (Matthew 17:1-2 and Acts 9:3-6). Jesus manifested His glory. I could go on and on with people having an intimate relationship with God, our Creator and Father. Are you having such a relationship? Why aren’t you? Are you going to Bible classes and just learning the Bible? Or is the Word becoming your flesh? Come join us as we study the Word “to show ourselves approved of God” (2 Timothy 2:15). Now let me tell you about our COUNTRY CRAFT FAIR. We will eventually fix our warehouse to resemble a barn. Each month on the third Saturday and Sunday, we will have a fair, and people who are producing beautiful crafts will have an opportunity to sell them. We expect this to grow and become international, as other countries too are appreciating the crafts that are the warp and woof of America. Pray for us in this new adventure. Julian classes are doing fine. If you haven’t treated yourself to this experience, don’t let another schedule go by without doing so. We always have new and exciting gifts in the store! Our lap robes are in! Our tablecloths are in! New, refreshing cards are here for every occasion. Well, spring is here and there is that quiet excitement in the store — time to change the house around a bit, make a new flower arrangement, open the windows and let the sound of the birds singing fill the house. We have a new overlock sewing machine — the Simplicity Easylock® — in the store that is to sewers what a microwave is to cooks. Get your family to buy one for you for Mother’s Day. As God continues to cleanse the church, let us be numbered among those He will welcome in saying, “Well done, My true and faithful servant — enter into My joy. Though you were proud, you allowed Me to humble you. Though you were stubborn, you allowed My will to become yours. Though you were unclean, you allowed me to cleanse you and grow you up from a child into a mature adult. I am sick of proud, self-willed, arrogant babies. GREETINGS ONCE AGAIN “DEAR” FRIENDS; I like that word “dear”. It means “precious commodity — very rare and hard to find”. Another three months have gone by, and thank the Lord our Piecemakers flag is still flying. It seems the enemy on every side would like to destroy us, but somehow God prevails — many times to our surprise. Like Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed but not in despair;” (even though He sometimes causes us to even despair) “... persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed”; however, each day brings us a little nearer to our goal of being transformed into His image. This summer should be the best one ever at Piecemakers. Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me,” and we have lots of classes for the children! We pray they may bring in a new generation — satisfied with a simple life. Check the schedule for the classes for young people. On June 1, our Christmas things start coming in at the warehouse. Again, there will be discount buying there, so be the first to see the unique and lovely things to make our homes truly a place to rest. We’re closing out on a lot of wood articles and evergreen wreaths at our warehouse. Price is below our cost! Don’t miss this terrific bargain. Did you miss the last PIECEMAKERS COUNTRY CRAFT FAIR? DEAREST FRIENDS, Well, thank God, we’re still here... living one day at a time. The Lord is providing day by day - meeting our needs and stripping us of all our desires except our desire to know Him. There are so many “irons in the fire” here at Piecemakers. Check our Calendar of Events for happenings at Piecemakers. I expect the Lord to somehow open a cozy room for people to just come and fellowship with one another over a cup of tea and a morsel to eat. People are more important to us than making money or running a business, so pray for us that our business flourishes sufficiently to meet our high overhead. Remember, our Country Craft Fair will be at the country store — Piecemakers — at the same time: the 3rd weekend of October and November, and we are hoping by December to have the upstairs available as a permanent residence for many of the Craft Fair vendors. Pray this comes to pass. Recently we received by mail a prophecy outlining God’s plan for His next move of the Holy Spirit. God is calling His people to action as we start entering a great spiritual battle. Guns and carnal weapons of vindictiveness will not work. God needs spiritual warriors who have made themselves ready. If you would like to receive this enlight- ening prophecy, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and we’ll mail it to you. We pray Piecemakers will be a place where people can come and find answers to their problems as God shakes every kingdom to establish His own. People will be gathering together just to be together, whether it be to make a quilt together, create a wreath, wallpaper a house, or put in their driveway. DEAREST DEAREST FRIENDS, It’s that time of the year when the warmth of the fruit of our labors seems to come as a blessing - and then we start another year, hoping for an ever-increasing presence of God in our lives and pray His love and mercy come forth as fruit from our hearts. May He be evermore on our thoughts and actions as He draws us all together under His protective wing. The big news for this year is the PIECEMAKERS VILLAGE becoming a reality with precious “boutiquers” as an extension of our family. Surely God has opened wide a door to make Piecemakers a place where people from all over the world can come and find a place of peace and creativity. Please continue to support us in prayer as we enter into this new adventure, and be sure to become personally acquainted with our new family upstairs. A lot of new things will be taking place this next three months, so check our “Calendar of Events”. “Spin art” is in and so are tee-shirts and sweatshirts with one’s own original designs. DEAREST FRIENDS, There are so many changes that are taking place at Piecemakers. Let me share all of them with you. First off — the day before escrow closed on our Julian house, the buyers bought another house. Evidently God wants us to keep the house at least for the time being. Because of the need for extra help upstairs here, we are limiting the Julian classes to twice a month. That leaves the house for rent two weekends a month and every week Monday through Thursday. For a rest in the tall pines of the San Diego Mountains, spend some days in Julian. Fishing nearby at Lake Cuyamaca. Another wonderful thing has been added to our cabinet makers. Besides our custom-made cabinets and furniture, they are now installing modulars. These are ready-made beautiful cabinets — well-planned space for a fraction of the cost of custom-made cabinets. Shortly we will have samples in the store. Call Debbie or Kerry for estimates on renewing your kitchen, bath or garage. Now the big news is the opening of our Village upstairs. For those of you who haven’t been in to see the treasures in the little village upstairs, please don’t deprive yourself any longer. Besides having a bedroom full of doilies, dolls, wallhangings, antique furniture, etc., we have an all-season room with fun decorating items for all the holidays. Then there is the potpourri room. Surely there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. Our little Tea Room emits aromas of cookies and scones being baked every day. The little Scotch lass with the apron is Norma. You will see her bustling around making sure there is fresh tea, coffee and some delicious crumpet to snack on while you rest and chat with the other shoppers. If you want the best in hair styling for the least amount of money, visit “Sal’s Place”. Sally’s hours take her into night service for the working ladies. Then there is “The Fig Leaf” — clothes for all sizes in styles found nowhere but Piecemakers — some made by our own designers. Our lines of jewelry are the tops in the county, or could I stretch it and say the country? Some jewelry is designed right here in Orange County. Now we’re not forgetting Mary Cardin, well-known for her unbelievably unique artistry. Her art pieces will surely be here long after Mary. Be sure and buy one of these priceless, timeless pieces of art. Also chat with Mary who is usually busy teaching a class or painting in her studio/gallery. She is as interesting as her artwork. For fresh new books for children, and cards for all the family, visit our card and book room upstairs opposite the all-season room. The first sight to see as you enter the little village is a country window and a room full of very special collector item gifts. For that special wedding gift or birthday, don’t forget to visit this small treasure house halfway down the hallway. Now, last but surely not the least, the village crafters at the end of the hall (or the beginning) depending on which door you enter this little village, are bursting at the seams with handcrafted, continuously new items, and that certain gift that makes life a little brighter. One or two crafters are busy chatting and doing their thing — creating. So visit with them; get to know them like we have. Their gifts and their lives are truly an experience. I always forget to remind all of you to visit out country kitchen. It is tucked away behind the cash register downstairs, and many people don’t know it is there. We just got in a complete line of pewter. What a gift! What a treasure for
44 your home! We have rolling pins of all shapes and sizes, cookie cutters, cookie molds, cookbooks, pottery, and on and on. Please, if you’re looking for that special gift, go no further. 46 July — September 1989 Letter DEAREST FRIENDS, I hope you enjoy reading this letter as much as I enjoy chatting with you by pen and ink. Has your life been on a roller coaster that has just picked up its pace instead of getting better? Well, be of good cheer. You have a lot of company. God is teaching us how to walk in LIFE, where no minute is the same. Only in the grave of our old life is there that false peace — the status quo — ritual and death. We will (through much dis- ruption) attain to that great PEACE in the midst of the thundering and lightening. As our relationship with Him becomes perfected, so will our relationships with one another. Well, enough of that. Now to the business news. There is much to share and look forward to. July is the month of family picnics and summer frolicking. Our Fourth of July should be the best yet! We will have the comfortable oldies — hot dogs, hamburgers, the Upstairs String Band, and the Piecemakers Singers. And with the oldies, we have a “cake walk” for old and young, and a talent show for the young folks. Be sure and call Katie at the store and get your child signed up. Or perhaps you want to be in the show. This could be your opportunity to start your way to stardom! The Calico Singles Square Dancers will be with us again. And oh, yes, we are having a salsa and chili “cook-off”. Bring in your recipe that makes your family “lick their chops”. There will be prizes for the best recipes. Do you like garage sales? One booth on the Fourth will be filled with rummage. Besides all that, we are hav- ing a storewide sale, so come and celebrate the Fourth of July — the day we got our independence. Help us make this a “bang-up” celebration. July 28, 29 and 30, we will have a huge wreath sale. Buy your wreaths for fall and Christmas gift decorating. All wreaths will be wholesale or less. One $6.00 wreath will be $1.00. Also on the 29th and 30th, there will be a big DEMO BUSTER upstairs. Mark October 14th and 15th and November 18th and 19th on your calendar. These are the dates of our next Country Craft Fairs. These should be the biggest events of the year. Oh, yes, take special notice of the kids’ classes of all kinds scheduled throughout the summer. Don’t let your child get bored with having nothing to do. This “summer school” at Piecemakers makes learning fun. DEAREST FRIENDS, How great His love is toward all of us. And faithful is He to finish the work He began in each of us. We are really all excited about the ever new and interesting things happening here at Piecemakers and how it reaches to the uttermost parts of the earth. The Doll Show was a tremendous success. Where can you go and see a show as beautiful as this without paying $5 or $10 for it? Nowhere but Piecemakers. Our “Fig Leaf” clothes and jewelry have blessed many of our customers. We try to have clothes that are unique and different and priced within the reach of everyone’s pocketbook. Our style show was tops. What fun! We will have our next one NOVEMBER 11th. 49 Are you one who loves to enter contests? Well, we have a good one going. First prize will be a quilt! Here is what you do: Send in an original quilt block of your own design. We will put all the blocks on display and our customers will vote on the one that is the most unique and beautiful. Piecemakers will retain all rights to the block as we plan to print a book including all the blocks. If your block appears in the book, your name will appear with it. I wish you could see the letters we get in telling us about the wonderful expertise of our tilers and cabinet makers. Thank you for the letters. Also, thank you for encouraging us in our obedience to write “the word” of God. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Our previous quilt raffles have been so successful that we decided to have another one. The quilt is a beautiful “Tree of Life” pattern. Donations are $1.00 for each ticket. We will be open THANKSGIVING and CHRISTMAS with a turkey dinner for those who want to come and eat. We are ever grateful to God for our abundant food and would like to share it. EVERY SATURDAY, Andrea will be demonstrating upstairs in the “Village”. She is a very talented young lady and will be demonstrating how to do flower and fruit arrangements of all kinds. Have you noticed our ever-growing supply of beads and jewelry-making goodies? Our bead counter is upstairs by the cash register. Katie and Lori are usually available for suggestions and help. Sad to say, our home in Julian is sold. Many took advantage of the times of refreshing that little home provided. We called it “a place in God’s heart”, and those who went up there can attest to that description fitting it pretty well. With that door closing, I’m sure God has a bigger and better one opening up. Watch and see! Once again we will have our big “PRE-CHRISTMAS SALE” the weekend of NOVEMBER 24th, 25th and 26th. There will be a storewide sale with the emphasis on Christmas items. Hot apple cider and snacks will help make this a fun time. The store is brimming over with gifts for all members of the family. Please help us with our mailing list. GREETINGS, and HAPPY NEW YEAR from all the PIECEMAKERS! I pray that every burden be lifted from all those who are heavy laden. We made it through another turbulent year and we’re entering the new decade with gratefulness in our hearts. Thank you for your prayers and support and encouragement. Let me tell you that the tongues of people who slandered us are being quieted, and people are coming in the store in spite of those attempting to put us out of business. What God is establishing, no man can put asunder. Our year has had many, many awesome blessings, mostly in the form of human beings. We have had many visitors from Japan. They are so eager to become part of what’s happening at Piecemakers. Piecemakers is very well known all over Japan. The Japanese ladies love quilting, sewing and all crafts, and are very good at working with their hands. Did you attend our Country Craft Fair? People came from miles around and were pleased with the quality of all the handmade crafts. What a festive time! The music was great. In spite of the heat, the people all had a good time. Our next fair will be April 7th and 8th. Then there was our fashion show! What a precious time was had by all. Our next show will be May 13, the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Treat yourself and your mother to a wonderful day. The food is always excellent and the enthusiasm of all who attend creates an atmosphere of “gemutlichkeit”. EASTER WEEK will be another big week for the children. Check the “KIDS CLASSES” for all that is happening. Once again we are having our week long “AFTER CHRISTMAS SALE”. Many things will be on sale at cost. And that week will culminate with a “BALLOON BUST SALE” with scads of free prizes, plus the PIECEMAKERS SINGERS and DEMOS. Also on JANUARY 1st, the winner of our quilt raffle will be announced. The week of January 1st through the 7th we’re having a WEEK OF DEMOS. The demos are new and exciting and informative. Look at the DEMO section for more information. Did you know we have clean, expert tilers and cabinet makers and men who do home remodeling? We have our contractor’s license and all the men are seasoned workers. FRIDAY, MARCH 23, we are having a PIECEMAKERS’ POTLUCK from 11:00-1:00. Bring your favorite dish — salad, casserole, dessert, whatever, and bring a written recipe. While we eat, Jim will copy all the recipes for all of you. WE’LL LIMIT THE NUMBER TO TWENTY, so call early. A demo will be included. We will have a COOKIE EXCHANGE on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 from 1:00-2:00. Bake 15 of your favorite cookies and go home with a dozen cookies. Again, bring your recipes. We will have a demo and then munch on cookies and drink tea.

Our first “BEAR SHOW” will take place in June. Watch for more information on this. There’s something I’d like to talk about to all of you. I know you’ve been reading the little flyer we give out about the theft going on in the store. For years we have done nothing about this, hoping that God would deal with our enemies; however, the situation has gotten so bad that we’re hiring a security guard and checking bags and purses. This added trouble and expense for us is so disgusting. We have had king-sized quilts stolen, wallhangings... things that have taken months to make. One week we had three collector dolls stolen. I can’t imagine any of our customers doing this!! We have trusted everyone and dread doing this, knowing that most of our customers love the store as if it were their own. Please bear with us through this awful time. Eventually we hope the thieves will realize how awful it is to rape someone else’s property. April — June 1990 Letter Dearest Friends, I feel it a great privilege to have this little time of “gemutlichkeit” every three months with all of you. Letters come in regularly that are filled with much encouragement and tenderness toward us. Thank you for taking your precious time to write to us. We read all these letters in our daily early morning meeting so all the Piecemakers can be blessed. We also read and appreciate the few letters of rebuke and correction and these we also take to heart. Now for the news of happenings at Piecemakers. Never, since we began, have we had so many really awesome things to share with you. First off, we are having an international quilt contest. The theme is “THE FREEDOM OF THE NATIONS”. This contest will involve people from all over the world. We plan to send a quilt block to leaders of many countries for their signature and we will make a quilt, the Lord willing, to commemorate this great time in history. We called Barbara Bush to see if she would be one of our judges. She and George are not allowed to judge anything; however, we are hoping to get her as honorary representative of the nations for freedom. You people who are making this a successful adventure are as important as any dignitary. You are the people that make up the grass roots of all countries. Spread the word and write or call for contest rules and details. We will be doing much advertising so people worldwide will hear about it. The contest is from March, 1990 to March, 1991. Also watch for a children’s quilt contest involving all the schools of Costa Mesa. Many, many children are already finding peace and comfort in sewing and other crafts. Imagine rebellious, frisky America with a young generation bringing forth a new society of grass roots people. MAY 12th is our FASHION SHOW. Please make early reservations for this luncheon and show as we have room for only 100 people. Also, for that wardrobe of better clothes for less, shop at Piecemakers “FIG LEAF”....the finest in jewelry and accessories also. Then our COUNTRY CRAFT FAIR is becoming the “talk of the town”. Be sure and attend..... music, food, festivities of all kinds. That takes place APRIL 7th and 8th. Another biggie coming up — JUNE 2nd and 3rd we are having a BEAR SHOW. Bears, old and new from far and near are finding their way to Piecemakers. For that bit of nostalgia, don’t miss this show.

My Dear Friends, We never cease to be amazed at the ever unending new things men and women are creating. It reminds me of years ago when things were more precious and scarce, and therefore more dear to our hearts and we cherished them and handed them down from one generation to another. Just when I think I’ve seen everything, someone will come in with a beautiful new wonder. And so the exciting world of quilts and crafts goes on and the family seems to be drawn closer together by the apostles (those teachers who go from store to store) teaching and creating good will. Kathy and Joanna left last week to visit our dear friends, Jill and Dave Wyman, at the Icehouse in Michigan. They will have classes, a trunk show, and just a good time with all the little clan in Grayling, Michigan. And what’s wonderful, they are staying with Jill and Dave. We always get excited when people come visit us from all parts of the world. And the most fun is having them live with us. We always feel like it’s a blessing sent by God. Surely God is in the business world like never before. Don’t look back to all that He has done, for He is doing a new thing where He has entered into the affairs of men. Doug, Janet and Donna are leaving the first week in July to go to Japan to a quilt show and visit that wonder- ful family God has given us in the Orient. It reminds me of that scripture in Romans — “If their (Israel’s) falling away is for the reconciliation of the world — what will their grafting in be but resurrection from the dead.” Things are ever stirring at Piecemakers. The big news is the beginning of DAILY DEMOS. Each day something new will be demonstrated. Some will be hands-on and some just demonstrations. We will have hands-on demos for kids and adults, so keep your ear attuned to what’s happening and join in the peace and tranquility of the craft world.
58 For the past two years we have been promising you our new cookbook. Now this fall it looks like we will finally get it to you... Lord willing. Our FOURTH OF JULY gathering will be filled with much activity for children and adults. We have a fife and drum, stunt show, square dancing, food, a talent show, and much more. Anyone can be in the talent show, from age 0 to 80. Once again — help! School is out, and after the first week the kids are bored and mom is crazy. Let them fill their time and release their creative juices with classes at Piecemakers. Speaking of kids — that precious element of our society — we are hoping to get the elementary schools of Costa Mesa involved in a quilt contest for kids. The theme will be “America Through My eyes”. Feels like the olden days when the young and old were involved in making things for the families. Well, the letters are beginning to come in from all over the world... women entering our quilt contest. Some are beginner quilters, some experienced. Be a part of what is happening throughout the world — enter your quilt depicting the glorious “Freedom of the Nations”. I don’t know the significance of Noah’s Ark being the most in-demand collector’s item at the present time. We have the most unique Noah’s Ark!!! This time may never come around again, so buy now. Next year you may not be able to get one. In Genesis, God prepared the ark as a sign of the destruction of all evil flesh. Today he is doing it again by the rain of the Spirit. July 27, 28 and 29 we will have a pre-Christmas sale. Do your Christmas shopping early. Nothing is better than having a Christmas roll around and your gifts all bought and wrapped. Dearest Piecemakers Friends, How good to greet all of you again and get you caught up on the latest happenings at Piecemakers. Doug, Janet and Donna attended a craft fair in Japan. This was quite eventful as the Japanese people love America and the western way of living. Their quilts are indeed quite breathtaking. We’ve also attended several shows here in the good old USA. What fun to meet all our quilter and crafter friends from all over the world. The men are as busy tiling and cabinet making, building and brick laying as we women are busy minding the store. And again, we all agree that the people make our work most enjoyable. Who needs to play when work is so fulfilling! Have you heard we are getting our own line of fabric? It is very beautiful and should be in the store in November. Also, our cookbook should be out soon — in time for that perfect Christmas gift. Be sure and check our calendar of events. Our Country Craft Fairs will be held October 20th & 21st and again on November 17th & 18th. Don’t miss these wonderful events. Did you know that food (eating with one another) is truly a unifying experience? We are continuously getting new lines of really wonderful food. Come browse in our little “kitchen” in the entrance. For that perfect hostess gift or Thanksgiving gift, nothing is better than a basket of food. If you want the finest in comfy, fun clothes (for less money), visit Judy in “The Fig Leaf”. Without you all upholding us, we probably wouldn’t be here. Be sure and look below for the sweet letter we got from someone who feels towards us and toward God just the way you do — He being our common bond of love. I want to thank all the rest of you for your letters of encouragement. How kind of you to take time out to write to us. May our dear Savior bless you richly and watch over you as you place your trust in Him. A Recent Letter from a Friend... Dear Friends at Piecemakers, Yesterday my friend Georgine and I embarked on an adventure traveling from Diamond Bar in search of Piecemakers. Now I have been hearing of this wonderful place from many very different sources. But last week my sister, who doesn’t drive freeways, returned from a visit (chauffeured by her husband), and offered to take heart in hand and take me down — and so I knew that this must truly be a wonderful place. We spent 3 delightful hours “oooing” and “aahing” and came home with many treasures. I quilt and make porcelain dolls and have just started English smocking. Perhaps it is just as well that you are where you are — close enough for me to look forward to and adventure out (kind of like looking forward to the Wells Fargo coming in “The Music Man”), and yet far enough to insure that my husband doesn’t divorce me for abandonment. I would like to take a minute to thank you for producing Seasons of Refreshing. I bought it some time ago at the Fabric Patch in Upland (another wonderful place). My husband loves the lemon squares. Are there eggs in these? If so, we had better eat them quickly so they don’t spoil. And the Ricotta Cake has become a must at social gatherings. I don’t feel that I visited a store — it was more like a neighborhood holiday boutique where all of the participants were just as happy to share a minute, share a laugh or a story as they were to sell something. Each of the ladies was like a friend I just met. I truly believe where two or three are gathered in His name, there is love. So Christ’s love was evident in your place. Many thanks. Hello Dear Friends, Another year is looming up before us and I pray we see a great healing in our nation as we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of our God. We here at Piecemakers would like to thank you from our very hearts for your wonderful support in more ways than monetarily. It is you people that make the store hum with activity. You are our very life, and we get great pleas- ure out of serving you. We hope you feel that Piecemakers is another home for you... that God’s peace be poured out upon you, not only in the store but also in your heart and home. Now for the plans for the next three months. January 1st, get your husband’s munchies all set out by his chair so he will be happy watching the game. Then you make your way to Piecemakers. We are having a fun day. From now until January 1st, see what you can make out of an egg carton. You can reduce it to paper pulp if you wish. We will have a nice prize for that most ingenious creation. We’ll display the creations for a week at the store. We’ll have good food, games, singing, etc., on the 1st, so come join us as we welcome in 1991 — the year of many changes. The next three months you’ll find something awesome happening here at Piecemakers. Don’t fail to be a part of it! We are having new teachers come from all over the country sharing their talents. New classes, new creations, new faces, and the old faithful teachers are with us once again. Have you met “the new kid on the block”? That is our very own fabric, designed and birthed by our Piecemakers maidens. This beautiful fabric is as fresh as a newborn baby and has already made its way into other countries. To give this “new baby” a baptism, we are having a “FABRIC CHALLENGE” CONTEST. Using at least three of our fabrics in combination with other fabrics of your choice, we challenge you to create that fresh, unique wallhanging, block, doll, quilt or whatever. The projects will be due June 1st, and displayed Father’s Day weekend, June 14th, 15th and 16th. Awards will be given June 15th. Get your needle, turn on your creative thinker, and make that creation that will make even you smile. One of the big events taking place in 1991 will be the “FESTIVAL OF QUILTS” which will be the grand finale of our worldwide quilt contest. We will have the quilts from many nations represented. We have six from Russia, plus many from other countries. To top it off, the quilt hanging in our entrance will be raffled off. Please don’t miss this commemorative event which is in honor of the “FREEDOM OF THE NATIONS”.
64 February 16th will be the celebration of the end of the Children’s Quilt Contest, “America Through My Eyes” with a big barbecue. Quilts and blocks will be displayed on February 15th, 16th & 17th, and prizes for the best entries will be given. Did you know that our new cookbook finally made it to the stands? It is well worth the long wait. For that special gift, treat yourself and your friends to a book that’s more than a cookbook. By the time you read this, we will be in Germany, hopefully making a way for Piecemakers to become estab- lished in that country. We will keep you informed as to the progress we make. The 17th and 18th of December, we have a trunk show with the Army services’ wives from 8th Infantry Division. We will be in Nuremberg also sharing Piecemakers patterns, etc. Please pray for us. April — June 1991 Letter
Dearest Friends, Greetings and God’s blessings from all the Piecemakers. We feel very privileged to be able to have this friendly chat every three months. If you are caught in the tremendous upheaval taking place in the world today, we pray that more and more we all come to have our security in our ever-loving Father. If your life is in shambles and you have nowhere to turn — if poverty seems to have its jaws wide open to you — please know that we are in the same boat, and as we cry out to God, He seems to meet our daily bread in a very remarkable way. Remember, He chastises and strips those whom He loves. He is calling all of us to repentance. He wants to strip off the garments of pride and religion and clothe us with humility. These last three months have been most interesting. Our trip to Germany opened doors for us to teach quilting and other needlework to Army wives and also the German community. We met some very warm and wonderful German people. All of the month of May, Kathy, Marilyn, John and Greg will be over in Europe teaching classes and having trunk shows. We are hoping to have one lady from Russia come and visit us for the “Festival of Quilts”. The response to the International Quilt Contest from Russia warmed our hearts as eight ladies entered. Last week we got a letter from a Russian lady who would like to come over here and work at Piecemakers. She has a son and a husband. So if you hear someone in the store with an accent, you’ll know we have a Russian fam- ily as part of the Piecemakers. Many new things are coming into the store each day. The Americana look is definitely in and will last for some time. America is changing and the nostalgia woven into our heritage is coming out in a red, white and blue tea- dyed look. Everyone wants to get a keepsake while the getting is good. Don’t let our big leviathan government get you down. April 19th, 20th and 21st we are having a “TAX PAY- ERS’ BLUES SALE”. Let us ease the pain of your frustration from the tax season by paying your sales tax for you. Can you remember America when there were no taxes, when the government was for the people and by the people? Our fabric (what we designed here at Piecemakers) has found its way across the seas and is selling very well in this country and abroad. Thanks to all of you. GREETINGS, DEAREST FRIENDS, The summer months have begun and that means kids are on vacation; moms are off vacation; barbecues, days at the beach, and of course, some classes at Piecemakers for both kids and moms. We have a very interesting summer in store for you. July Fourth we will have our annual family day with music, games, barbecue, a talent show, home baked pies, our clown, and many other fun events. On July 19 and 20, we will don our tarps and tables outdoors and give you a grand sweep preview of fall holiday gifts with 20% off all items. Let’s get our shopping done early so we can enjoy the holidays. We’ll have hands-on demos. Make your holiday wreath or table centerpiece. 70 August 10 and 11 is the Doll and Bear Show. If you have never been to our doll shows, please treat yourself to a day out you’ll always remember. Dolls and bears from all over the country will be on display. Then come August 31 we plan to have a tea room special — a free cookie with every bowl of soup or sandwich. Have you ever been to an auction? Well don’t miss Piecemakers’ first. We’ll have all sorts of things — antiques, quilts and many other items — that’s Labor Day, September 2nd. We also are having tours come from Japan and many from all parts of California. Our tours are really great. You can have a tour with lunch or just scones and coffee. Unless something is done about it, we could end up like Russia. When things look bad, always remember God has all things under His control and will care for those who seek Him. DEAREST FRIENDS, The fall season is upon us, and with fall comes the holiday season so dear to all our hearts. Let us pray that the nostalgia of this season be poured out in our hearts the year around as God draws us ever closer to His heart and opens the doors of His many mansions. The big news is our CALENDAR OF EVENTS found on the last page. The auction on Labor Day was fun. Doug made a good auctioneer. Judy, Susie, Carol and Stephen are back from a most enjoyable three weeks in Australia. They started with The Stitches and Crafts Show and then spent the rest of the time teaching and doing trunk shows. Thanks to Peter, Lynne and family of Berrima Patchwork, the Australian trip was an adventure stamped on Piecemakers’ hearts. Can I pour out our hearts to you, dear friends? You keep us in business! We are here today because of your support. We have around 12,000 students in our classes per year. We get no support from the government. On the contrary, we pay dearly with taxes, fines and other penalties put upon the people who are striving to keep their businesses alive. What I really mean to talk about is the theft that continues daily in our store from quilts to fabric to small things. We would like to make an attempt to curtail some of our heavy losses through thievery by spot checking bags and purses. To offend any of our faithful friends would cause us much grief. From now on, however, we are going to spot check bags. If we happen to check yours and you are a faithful, law-abiding customer, please do not take offense. THE THIEVERY MUST STOP! Anyone caught stealing will be prosecuted and forbidden to come in our store. We already have apprehended and sentenced two thieves. Please bear with us as we weed out the people who are causing us much financial and emotional woe. Now for more cheerful news. We have a new line in the store — creatures made by Mary Pearman of Illinois. These “dolls” are unbelievably wonderful and will be that special heirloom that goes from one generation to another. Mary makes these exclusively for Piecemakers. They are a rare find. By the time you receive this, Deborah, Donna, Kerry and Chet will be in Holland and Germany teaching and bringing Piecemakers’patterns and goodwill to the European market. Dearest Piecemakers’ Friends, I’m writing this letter in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and just before our wonderful Craft Festival. Surely people make the world go round and also make up God’s Kingdom. What would we do without them? By living in a community as we do, we all appreciate more than ever the beauty of the human race. By dying out to our own desires, we find the community takes on a new life. What a task to learn to live in harmony with God and with men. Our tours are definitely the highlight of “What’s Happening at Piecemakers?”. When is a tour much more than a tour? When you have a tour with Piecemakers! We have twenty ladies coming from New Zealand. Our Japanese friends came as a tour, took classes and we all were of one accord. There’s no language barrier when you’re enjoying one another. If anyone is interested in taking a class in Maine, please contact us. We have access to a lovely place far classes on a lake near Portland. Sounds like a great time in the trees and lakes countryside of Maine. We continue to pursue our desire to open our tea room. It is a sorry state, indeed, when the government is the enemy of the people and makes it almost impossible to have a business. It seems like only a drastic revolution and change of heart in the American people can rid us of our leeching government. I surely would have no desire to be a government worker when God finally says, “Enough!” Want to attend a fun class? Sharla and Margrit are teaching a mystery class. As we shake off the garbs of winter and put on the fresh, new garments of spring, new ideas start springing forth — old crafts are being renewed and Piecemakers is vibrant with activity. We got a call yesterday from Baumholder, Germany. She said, “I’ve started quilting and can’t stop. When the Piecemakers come to Germany, can they visit our army base?” Then she went on to say that the word gets out through the “Stars and Stripes” and television and radio and the good old human grape vine that the Piecemakers are coming soon and excitement fills the air. Joanna, Diane, Jean and Doug will spend a little more than a month in Holland and Germany teaching and making friends. We always learn a lot from our visits to other countries. Surely we Americans will be shortchanged if we fail to see that we can learn much from our brothers and sisters in other lands. We have found the most cooperative, efficient people who make our trips to Europe most fruitful. News on the homefront is always exciting. Our teachers are a wellspring of creativity. We not only have the best from this country but also have teachers from other lands who come and share their expertise. Do you want your dormant talents tapped? Would you like to come forth with your very own creations? Well, we have over 300 classes to choose from to help stimulate your creative juices. Just another word of thanks to all who uphold us in prayer. For you, literally thousands, who are praying for the tea room to open...we are still in litigation. America is in sad shape and the bureaucrats seem to be the only ones who fail to see it. They are the ones who get their livelihood from us, the taxpayers. Our government workers are so arrogant and ignorant they don’t seem to realize they are biting off the hand that feeds them. We, the people of America, have made our government God. We keep turning to our government for help instead of turning to God. Remember folks, our states are united because of God, not because of our federal government. We could do away with our federal government and take a leach off the people. I believe we are all waking up to the fact that man’s governments, be they communism or capitalism, all end up wield- ing their authority over the people who work 12 hours a day just to keep the bureaucracy alive. As the old world passes away like an old worn out wineskin, let us gird our loins, pull up our boot straps and follow our Savior to a new world. As man’s governments topple and the recession grows into a depression, the words of our Savior are most comforting: “Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy laden and I shall give you rest”. “He has a new “life-style” for all of us. Let us find our sustenance and peace in Him. Though welfare fails, though social security passes away, though all religion fails, let us seek Him who will never pass away and place our trust in Him. 79 July — September 1992 Letter Dearest Friends, You know how I feel about this time spent chatting with you every three months. To me it is a great privilege. Tonight as I write this, my heart is very troubled. Because this affects all of you as much as it affects me; let me share with you what I feel is a cancer that is eating away your freedom and my freedom — a cancer in our government that has become such a growth, I fear it is too late to do something to stop it short of a full revolution. I fear for the people of America. I fear that all we have held dear to us — our Constitutional rights — our freedom to run our businesses as we feel fit — our freedom to live without the tyranny of our government entering into places where they have no business — are these freedoms slipping from us like sand sifting through our fingers? I’ve said all that to say this. Our tea room has been closed for over a year — not because of uncleanliness or unsanitary conditions, but because we won’t put a wall where the Health Department wants one. We happen to have a brick floor in our tea room. They object to one color brick because it is too dark. Our refrigerator is undersize although we use it only for our drinks. Our candy counter needs three sinks behind it that will take up more room than the candy counter. They say it is to wash and rinse our utensils — which are two cup-size scoops. I could go on and on about their unreasonable Gestapo tactics used to close down the life blood of America — the small businesses. I call this murder — anytime someone takes away your right to make a living and your incentive to work, they take away your life. We have around 2500 names of people who are ready to march on the Health Department — who are fed up with our paying our taxes for their salaries when we really are paying them to put us to death. Now we have lost much money with our Tea Room closed. We have spent around $50,000 on fruitless counsel- ing. If we were to obey and change our store according to the whims of the Orange County Health Department, we would have to spend another $150,000. Because the bureaucrats spend our money with an “easy come, easy go” attitude and because most of them don’t know what a day’s work is, they care not that we, the working class, work 12 hours a day to keep them in their splendid life style. They care not that most small businesses do not have the money to carry out their “highfalutin” ideas. Where is the government of the people, by the people and for the people? Since when did our government think it should wield its power over us when in fact our government should serve and nurture the businesses — the life blood of a society. If ever the people get the government back on their shoulders where it belongs, the people would judge whether or not a restaurant or tea room was clean. If the service is bad or unsanitary, we don’t need the government to “straighten us out”. People just won’t patronize a dirty place. No “permit” on a wall will guarantee a clean place. No sink put in will guarantee the people wash their hands. Let us all seek the Lord and pray He destroys our government in the same way Pharaoh was swallowed up in the Red Sea as the children of Israel found their way to freedom. Let us pray our hearts all learn to serve one another and care for one another’s welfare. Are the Los Angeles riots a beginning of a revolution or will America humble ourselves and God intervene?
