1 Timothy 1:1-2 “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord”.

Grace, mercy and peace. How powerful are these three words? To have them a part of your life everyday is certainly productive and beneficial. If we look at the first word, grace, it is the unmerited favour of God. This means there is nothing you could possibly do to earn God’s favour. Favour is when you are liked by people, welcomed, looked up to and trusted. It’s like you become someone’s favourite. These days we may liken it to the favour of a movie star. They are popular so they are sought after. Everyone wants to be associated with them. Companies will give them gifts of clothing, jewellery, cars and more just so their product, if seen on a star, is endorsed, therefore influencing others to purchase that product. Someone who is favoured has their needs met. They have access to certain exclusive places; they have the power to influence society. When Paul wrote to Timothy he was expressing his desire to see God bless him with this favour that has already been purchased for us by Jesus. This is exactly what God wants us to walk in. He desires to see us have influence, to have all our needs met and to be trusted in. Today, as you go about your day, why not have expectations that God has poured his grace out upon you and that you can walk in it. It’s amazing how our confidence can instantly grow as we begin to expect God to favour us in everything we do. Then there is the mercy and peace that accompany favour. To be merciful towards someone means you are covering their mistakes, you’re forgiving them for their weaknesses. The blood of Jesus has covered our mistakes and so now we walk in the mercy of God. We’re not perfect but every time God looks at us He sees His son Jesus and He is perfect. We can therefore grow in an even greater confidence. The peace comes naturally when we walk in this state of favour and acceptance. There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God so we might as well enjoy walking in it. Our hearts can feel at ease knowing that we are blessed in such a way.

Prayer I want to thank you for this day. I receive right now your grace, mercy and peace. I know you want to favour me, bless me, provide for me and cause me to have influence in the world that I live in. Today I declare my belief in your word and appropriate by faith your grace, mercy and peace. I ask you to fill my heart with peace, my mind with confidence and may everything I do today establish your kingdom. I love you and I know you love me. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 2 DAY 2 1 Timothy 1:3-5

1 Timothy 1:3-5 “As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”

Another group of three important phrases contained in these scriptures that I want to focus on are found in verse 5 – a pure heart, a clear conscience and a genuine faith. In order for us to be effectively filled with the love of God we need three heart conditions. A pure heart is a heart that is clean of any sin. We live in a fallen world and every day we have the potential to sin. It might not be so drastic. It could be as simple as a bad attitude, disrespect towards our boss and our parents. Perhaps it is more dramatic and maybe we struggle with a secret addiction. Sin separates us from God. It puts us in a state of guilt and hardness of heart that also makes it difficult to receive the love and grace of God. Many of us, when we sin, fall into the trap of running and hiding from God. When we sin we should first repent from our sin and ask the Lord to clean us. When our heart is clean, we have a greater reassurance of the love of God in our hearts. A clear conscience also helps us to receive the love of God. There are too many Christians that live in the guilt of what they did in the past. The devil also loves to remind us of what we used to be like. However, once we have said we are sorry, the Lord takes away our mistake. He says He places it in the sea of forgetfulness to remember it no more. We can also clear our consciences by making sure we say sorry to anyone we have hurt. Whether they forgive you or not, you are making the right move towards clearing your conscience in order to receive the love of God. The third phrase is so important in our day and age. We live in a cynical world. Genuine people are sometimes hard to find. We often become cynical towards people because we have been lied to. Take for example an anti-wrinkle cream that you spend hundreds of dollars on without any results. When you see an ad in the future for a similar product, you tend not to believe their claims because you have been lied to before. You may have been lied to about some more serious things and it has put a cynicism in your spirit towards the word of God or perhaps God appointed leadership. God wants you to have a genuine faith in your heart that would put your trust in him to see his love poured out. He also wants it to be genuine so that the world may see that He is real and that His promises are yes and amen! Whatever predicament you may find yourself in why not spend a moment before the Lord getting your heart right and position yourself to receive the love of God.

Prayer I thank you that you love me. I thank you that today, no matter what has happened to me, no matter what I have done, I can receive a touch from you that can instantly bring me to the place of purity with a clear conscience and genuine faith. I confess to you these things that I have held in my heart that have separated me from you. Please forgive me and cleanse me from my sin. I let go of the things of my past. I thank you that they have no hold on my mind or my heart. I let go of the guilt and shame and I ask for your precious blood to cleanse me. Forgive me too of any unbelief and cynicism. I put my trust in you and choose to believe you above my circumstances and my past experiences. I receive your love right now. Fill me to over flowing. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 3 DAY 3 1 Timothy 1: 6-14

1 Timothy 1: 6-14 “Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that law[a] is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”

God is so good at turning lives around. If I think of the apostle Paul and when he was first being mentioned in the Bible, you would never think that God would transform his life to the extent to which he did. To think a third of the New Testament was written by him. He was a vicious persecutor of the church. He would go from house to house dragging men and women out of their houses to put them in gaol. Paul even describes himself as a ‘chief of sinners’. Yet God turned his life completely around. Paul went from a murderer of Christians to a disciple of Christians. He went from a killer to the one who ushered the gentiles into the kingdom of God. Our God is amazing. You may look at your life, your past or even your present and wonder how God could ever use you. Maybe it’s nothing that you have done but rather what others have done to you that put you in this state of insecurity or hopelessness. If God can turn Paul’s life around then he can definitely do the same for you. I’ll never forget the day many years ago when I met my old French teacher in a shopping mall. It had been a number of years since I had left school. I was now working as a teacher myself. When I was at school I was never expected to pass year 12 and no-one really had any expectation that I would go on to any tertiary study. When she asked what I was doing now I proudly told her of my achievements. She nearly fell over. I went away from that conversation with a great sense of achievement in my heart. Maybe you have been told similar things. Maybe no-one ever believed in you either. That shouldn’t stop God. His plans for you are for good. He wants to prosper you not harm you. He wants to turn your life around. Maybe you sit here today with sense of satisfaction because you have really made something of your life. Do you think that is all that God has for you? Have you reached your potential or could there be more? I would suggest there is. God wants to do far exceedingly over and above all we dare think or imagine. Let me stir you faith to believe God for the turn- around in your life. Whether you life is good, bad or mediocre, there is a ‘turn-around’ for you today.

Prayer I stand in faith and expectation at what lays ahead for me today. I thank you that you are the God of the ‘turn- around’. You desire to turn my mourning into dancing, my sorrow into joy! I ask you today Holy Spirit that you would fill me with your power and your anointing. Open up opportunities for me to succeed and prosper. In my work/study I ask for your favour and your ability to do all that you have called me to do. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 4 DAY 4 1 Timothy 1: 15-20

1 Timothy 1: 15-20 “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.”

Paul encourages Timothy to cling to his faitvh. It’s quite an unusual way to encourage someone in their faith but it does imply there will be times when there will be circumstances that will try and steal or test our faith. Perhaps when someone gets a negative test result from the doctor and immediately our head begins to spin with all the negative things that could happen. Maybe it comes when someone we trusted betrays us. Whatever the circumstances, that is when we need to cling. The dictionary defines the word cling - 1. To hold fast by or as by embracing, entwining, or sticking; adhere, 2. To be or stay near, as if holding fast, 3.To be emotionally attached. Now this helps to put this whole meaning into a greater light. We need to embrace, entwine and stick to our faith. Paul was referring to some people whose faith had become shipwrecked and that we need to fight for our faith. Let’s face it; in this world there are a whole lot of things that would oppose our faith. However, if we fight to preserve and grow our faith then it will activate the unseen and cause it to materialize. When God spoke to Russell and I to leave Adelaide and move to Melbourne to plant a church, there was nothing that we could see was Planetshakers City Church. We left in faith. Then when people started to discourage us in our pursuit of God’s direction for our lives we had to make a decision. We could either be persuaded by the opinion of man that said a church in the city could not grow or we could cling to our faith and fight in prayer until we saw God’s promises come to pass. I would cling to faith any day now that I am living in the wonderful purposes and promises of God. Planetshakers City Church is the most exciting, vibrant church I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. Although there are times of fighting for our faith, I have definitely learnt the lesson that Paul was encouraging Timothy in. Let me encourage you with the same exhortation – cling to your faith, fight for it and let God work a miracle in and through your life!

Prayer I am thankful for this day, as it is another opportunity to grow in my faith. Help me Holy Spirit to cling to my faith in you no matter what comes my way. Give me courage and strength to stand in the face of adversity and to believe you at your word above my circumstances. Today I confess my belief in your promises that are yes and Amen! I love you and trust in you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 5 DAY 5 1 Timothy 2:1-7

1 Timothy 2:1-7 “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.”

Paul gives us some great instruction and direction on the kinds of prayers we should be praying. He has broken them down into 4 approaches to prayer. The first – supplication implies praying with a need. When you pray with a need in mind there is more of a earnestness, passion perhaps or even desperation. Our prayers should never be passionless or out of ritual or religion. They need to be done in relationship. When my children need something from me, my response will depend upon their urgency or their passion. The second way to ask God for anything is getting in a position to address your requests to God. Talking to God should be done in a place without distraction so that your conversation won’t get interrupted, that your heart can be focused and that you can hear as well as talk. Everyday I go into our formal lounge room, a place that is less frequented by the rest of our family. It gives me a quiet and private place where I can pour out my passionate requests to the Lord. The third approach to prayer is intercession. When I looked a little deeper into the meaning of this word I came across a wonderful definition – a falling into. In our conversation with God there is a place of prayer where we fall into God, his will, his heart, his desire, and his love. Have you ever been in that place of prayer and you know you are praying the heart of God? I know I have. You feel such an intimacy with God at this time and your prayers are far more effective because you are in unity with his will and his kingdom. The fourth approach is thanksgiving. I always try to be thankful in my prayer times. My thankfulness also reflects my faith. Basically my thankfulness about various issues that I’m praying about puts me in a position of expectation and trust. As I thank I am declaring that the answer has already come. I might not see the answer yet but I know it is on the way so I’m thankful for His faithfulness. Prayer like this is always uplifting and beneficial. Paul also encourages us to pray for everyone, for our leaders and for all people to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. When we pray along these lines we are praying according to God’s will and therefore we can expect a positive response. Please let me encourage you to pray more than you ever have. God is the answer and prayer is the method for revival.

Prayer Where would I be without you and your faithfulness to answer our prayers? I know my current relationship with you is based upon someone, somewhere praying for me to come to know you. You see all the people in my world at this moment. I ask you Lord that you save all those that are lost. Please bring them to the saving knowledge of your son Jesus. I also ask that you would take me to greater passion to come before you in prayer. Help me Lord to find that place where you and I can just hang out and I can fall into you. I love you with all my heart and I am thankful for your faithfulness to me in hearing and answering my prayers. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 6 DAY 6 1 Timothy 2:8-15

1 Timothy 2:8-15 “I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women[a] will be saved[b] through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.”

This next portion of scripture has been hotly debated over the years and has been used to hold many women out of involvement within the church for centuries. It has also helped to uphold some religious traditions that have been implemented in the church regarding what women should and shouldn’t wear. Today I do not want to start the same debate but rather look at what Paul was trying to identify within the heart of men and women when they come before God. Firstly, Paul talks about men approaching God in prayer with holy hands. The grace of God has indeed cleansed us from sin but we cannot continue to sin. In our pursuit of God we should be mindful of living a life free from the works of sin. Here Paul highlights for man controversy and anger. Anger is a real issue in our society. The stories of ‘road rage’ for example can be horrifying. I will never forget an incident with a truck driver and a hammer and what progressed from a traffic incident to murder. This is the extreme of course but this is exactly where anger can lead us to if unchecked. This is where the grace of God can come into full effect in our lives. We can approach God in repentance and then find the supernatural strength to forgive and be healed in our hearts. Paul’s challenge to women targets issues of the heart too. Instead of being obsessed with a woman’s outward appearance, which can help hide her true feelings or heart condition, Paul was encouraging women to do good works for God. It is harder to ‘fake it’ when volunteering. In a society that is obsessed with the outward appearance it is important to live a life that would reflect a genuine relationship with God. This way the gospel can have a far greater effect. No one can argue the gospel when someone is living it. Paul also talks about the submissive attitude of a woman. I remember a time when a person who was upset that I had just preached from the pulpit cornered me. They were quoting this particular scripture at me with quite an angry tone. I had to simply reply that I was being submissive to my husband’s direction. He had asked me to preach and I was submitting to his direction. The gentleman had no form of rebuttal. Paul says ‘I do not let women teach men’ but that doesn’t mean that under the leadership and direction of a man that women should never teach. Again though, Paul was targeting an issue of the heart. When a woman’s heart is vying for the attention of others, pushing for control or stepping out in their own authority trying to lord it over people then this is the wrong kind of spirit. I wouldn’t want that kind of a person having influence or authority over people either. However, when a woman’s heart is teachable, contrite and soft then I don’t think wearing make-up or nice clothes is an issue. They can teach and they can be used powerfully by God just as many women within the pages of the Bible were. It all depends upon the attitude of the heart.

Prayer Please cleanse my heart of any wrong attitude. I repent today of anger, getting caught up with controversies, being too concerned about my outward appearance and not concerned enough about the condition of my heart. I want to approach you with holy hands and with the right heart condition. Empower me today to love, forgive and walk in the fruits of the Spirit. I commit this day to you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 7 DAY 7 1 Timothy 3:1-13

1 Timothy 3:1-13 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer,[a] he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self- controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. In the same way, their wives[b] are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. “

In this passage of scripture we are again being encouraged by Paul to appoint people into positions of authority by examining the condition of their hearts. Although he is not directly saying these things your heart is always exposed by the kind of life you live and what others say about you. I have worked with people over the years that in front of me have acted one way but then treated others in a completely different way. This is hypocritical. This is pretending to be a disciple of Christ. If ever the church received criticism it would consistently be in this area. People want to know that what you have found in Christ is real and that it will have the same positive influence on their lives too. People are also looking for the truth. Words are easy to say. Someone can say ‘I love you’ but when their words are not backed by action then the words have no authority or power. I have sometimes said to my children, ‘don’t just say you’re sorry, and show me that you are sorry by a change of action.’ In this day and age it is so important to be the church. In our church we try as much as possible to appoint people into positions of leadership that have what we would describe as ‘runs on the board’. Some people have criticized us for having high expectations of character, attendance and attitude. However, we are simply trying to follow the advice of the apostle Paul. Although we understand the grace of God and that we are not all perfect, there is a responsibility to the body of Christ and to the world to communicate the gospel in its entirety. That means in word and deed the love of God is demonstrated. When I read this passage I do not just see a list of rules, rather I see the challenge to be like Christ inside and out. Let me encourage you to seek after these qualities for your own life. Let others, whether they are saved or not, see the authenticity of the gospel through your life.

Prayer This world is looking for truth. You are the truth. Help me today to reflect the truth of your word inside and out. Help my actions to back up my words. Let people begin to trust the authenticity of my words as they see what I believe in being backed up by what I do. Today Holy Spirit I ask for your power to love, to be patient, to be generous, to listen, to encourage and to reflect Jesus to this world. Let others see your light shining through me. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 8 DAY 8 1 Timothy 3:14-16

1 Timothy 3:14-16 “Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He[c] appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.”

I am so drawn to the statement in verse 16, ‘Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit’. (NLT) Jesus walked the earth as just an everyday kind of a guy. There was nothing about him that distinguished him from anyone else until the Holy Spirit came upon him and miracles started happening. Up until then he was known as Jesus the carpenter. I am so encouraged by this. I am just an everyday kind of a girl. However, when the Holy Spirit comes on me I can do extraordinary things. The moving of the Holy Spirit through miracles authenticated the words of Jesus. When Jesus said that ‘no-one could come to the Father except through me’ and then he raised someone from the dead his words were given authority. This is why the church needs to move out in faith and pray for people in the world and see them healed and set free. The church has always had a voice. They haven’t always had the power or the vindication that what they were saying was true. When someone hears that Jesus is our healer and then they get healed then their capacity to believe is increased. The world is driven by science. There are theories that need authentication. If a theory cannot be proven then it is disregarded. With God we need to prove to this world through our lives and the power of the Holy Spirit moving through us that he is alive and that he is real. Recently while leading worship I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to stop and say something that was very uncomfortable for me. He told me that there were people in the meeting that had been abused and hurt and broken. He wanted me to say that it was the devil’s plan for their lives to hurt and abuse them and that God wanted to heal them and restore them. This spoke specifically to a woman who had come to church for the first time. She felt that the words were spoken directly to her heart and her situation. Because of that she was convinced that God loved her and she came down the front to give her life to Jesus. The Holy Spirit had vindicated the truth about Jesus. Let me encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with his power and to seek him for opportunities to step out in faith to prove that the word of God is true and that Jesus is real. Perhaps there is an opportunity awaiting you today.

Prayer I know you want to use me. I know you want to move through me to prove to this world that you are alive. Please give me opportunities today to be used by you to reach people. I open up my heart to hear your voice and to obey your promptings. Let today Lord, be a day of miracles, signs and wonders. Come upon me Holy Spirit just as you came upon Jesus and let me be your hands and feet. Help me to lead people to you and please authenticate your word as being true and relevant. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 9 DAY 9 1 Timothy 4:1-5

1 Timothy 4:1-5 “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.”

This world is looking for true faith. In fact, I think everyone is looking for the truth. There is safety and reassurance in truth. We live in a world of identity theft, credit card fraud, sales and marketing. It has become increasingly difficult to believe the truth about anything or anyone. There is something inside of each one of us that wants to believe people at their word but unfortunately too many people are getting burnt because of lies. Paul warns us against this, thousands of years before we were alive. This is a warning not to make us hard-hearted or cynical, rather it is a challenge to be spiritually discerning. We have seen people in their search for truth been led astray into cults or even religion that binds and holds you back from a personal relationship with God. I have experienced that in my upbringing. I’m sure no one intentionally meant to harm me. I had been a churchgoer all my life attending the church to which my parents took me. This religion was great at explaining all I needed to know about the birth of Jesus, the various Bible stories and how I should try and be a good person. However, I could never approach God on my own. I had to go through someone else. This made God seem impersonal and distant – like he didn’t really care for me because I wasn’t special enough to approach him myself. However, as the years went by I would talk to God myself. My life took a turn for the worst and that is when I cried out to him for help. He did help me by sending someone to me to tell me I could invite Jesus into my life to be my personal saviour. This thrilled me and of course I did. Suddenly I found that Jesus was true. Finally I had found someone who had told me the truth about God and I experienced the most tremendous love, hope and healing. When trying to discern what the truth is, I now simply ask myself the question “Is this going to draw me closer to Jesus? Is this person drawing me closer to Jesus?” If the answer to these questions is yes, then I am reassured that I am on the path to truth. The Holy Spirit will also lead us into all truth the Bible says. We can ask him anytime whether something is true on not. Sometimes I will just get an uneasy feeling about what a person is saying or how they are behaving. This to me is a good indication that the Holy Sprit is talking to me and warning me. I then spend some time in prayer asking him to show me more clearly what the problem is. This may come over time but he has never let me down. The word of God is also another test to whether something is true or not. Not that everything can be found in the word of God, it is an incredible guide to truth. Say for example, you want to know whether smoking is bad for you and whether, as a Christian, you should smoke. You cannot find, ‘thou shalt not smoke’ but you can find other scriptures that talk about being a wise steward, or that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and you have a responsibility to care for it and that anything that binds you is harmful for you. Then you can conclude that the truth is – smoking is destructive for me and therefore I should not smoke. May the truth lead you today and always.

Prayer I thank you that you came to show us the truth and that you promised that the truth would set us free. Today I ask for you to lead me into all truth. Help me to discern the truth in all the situations I find myself in today. I want to also speak the truth in love so help me be a carrier of your truth. I love you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 10 DAY 10 1 Timothy 4:6-16

1 Timothy 4:6-16 “If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance, that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

What an amazing exhortation Paul is giving Timothy. I especially love verse 12 – Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. (NLT) Paul is uncovering some important truths that help to authenticate the gospel. Our example is the one thing that will inspire others in their walk with God. What we say is very important. We have this practise in our family where we all tell each other that we love each other many times a day. We also are sure to speak positively and lovingly to one another. This makes for a very loving, comfortable environment. It also avoids unnecessary hurt or offense. We don’t always get it right but we are also quick to forgive and make sure the sun doesn’t go down on our offense. This is the kingdom of God in practice. When others observe the way we live they are assured that the gospel is real and that they can have what we have. I remember a time when a lady came into my house to give us a quote on getting some blinds over our windows. When she came the kids were home and so she was able to see us all together. She kept saying to me that our house was so peaceful. Although we live a suburb surrounded by trees and is very picturesque she couldn’t stop commenting on the feeling in the house. I was then able to share with her about Jesus and how he had changed our lives. The way we were all talking, living and loving was opening up someone’s heart to the truth about Jesus. When Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, Timothy was young and perhaps felt inadequate to instruct people who were older than him in the ways of God. Paul however was encouraging Timothy to let his words, life, love, faith and purity do the talking. When we live what we preach then this also gives us authority. I never like to preach anything that I haven’t first put into practice in my own life. Every sermon comes out of revelation followed by activation. I feel if I only preach what I know, not what I live then I am being a hypocrite and I can’t expect my words to hold any authority. However, when I am living what I am preaching, I am reassured that my words will have a greater impact upon people. I want them to know that the word of God is true and that if it worked for me then it can work for them. Some people can use lofty words and stir great emotion when they speak, but if they’re not living a life of love and purity then its all just waffle! Give me the authentic, lived out word of God any day of the week!

Prayer I desire that what I read in your word becomes a reality outworked in my day-to-day life. I ask for your help to live the way you want me to. Let my words be positive, let my actions be clothed in love, let my faith be stirred and let my life be pure so that others will see and know that you are alive. Despite my age, my background, my inadequacies, I know you want to use me to show off. Help me Holy Spirit. I need you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 11 DAY 11 1 Timothy 5:1-16

1 Timothy 5:1-16 “Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds. As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.”

It’s sad to think that in this day and age we have let go of caring for our own family members when they are old. Today it is more convenient to send our widowed Grandmothers or Grandfathers to nursing homes instead of having them in our own homes. Now I’m not talking about the ones that need medical supervision due to their health or the ones who don’t want to be with us. I am talking about those widows who genuinely need and would love our help. When we look after family then we are pleasing the Lord. I like to please the Lord and this is one way I can. My parents aren’t widowed yet but I have already suggested where to come if they ever found themselves alone. Paul in his letter was obviously addressing a practical need to the church in Ephesus. However, it does go deeper to identify an attitude that can creep into the church. Some people view church as the ‘fix my problem’ place. I’ve known of some parents over the years that have tried to blame the church for the behaviour of their children. The church didn’t raise the children so I can’t see how it would be the church’s fault if there were some character traits that were missing in their child. We need to take up our responsibility. I know the education department have been forced to take up various educational responsibilities in children’s schooling because parents have been inadequate. For example, my children have a subject known as Health, which will deal with healthy eating habits. That was something I never learnt about at school because that was something my parents would ensure I knew and practiced. My children also have a snack time at school called ‘munch and crunch’. The children can only eat fruits or vegetables during this time, thus ensuring they are having a balanced diet. This again is surely a responsibility of a parent. I used to work with the long term unemployed. Many of them enjoyed their life, living off of the support of the government. There were some that had come from a generational line of unemployed. For some reason they felt it was the responsibility of the government and the rich to pay for their living expenses. When did it become someone else’s responsibility? APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 11 DAY 11 1 Timothy 5:1-16

The Bible says that if you don’t work then you don’t eat. It is therefore our responsibility to work for a living, care for those we bring into the world, love our family and help with each other’s needs. This is the way God wants us to do things. We should also take responsibility for our own relationship with God. We can take our needs to God in prayer and not wait for someone else to do it for us. He is no respecter of persons and therefore will respect your prayer just as much as someone else’s. Let’s take up our responsibility and live a life worthy of the calling.

Prayer If there are any areas of my life that I have let go of my responsibility in then I am sorry. Please reveal these areas to me so that I can now function the way you want me to. I know at times there are some responsibilities that seem daunting but I know with your help I can get through. I ask for your power to fill me and flood me. Help me to live according to your will and your ways. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 12 DAY 12 1 Timothy 5:17-25

1 Timothy 5:17-25 “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain, and the worker deserves his wages.” Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning. I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden.”

There are many instructions within these verses for Timothy to follow. All of these are helpful because they deal with many life experiences. We are, however, reluctant to fulfil these commands from Paul due to the reaction of people. Imagine coming to church this Sunday and finding there were a row of people on the platform. As the service progresses, the people are then reprimanded by the Pastor for their sins. Can you imagine the outcry? The letters to the editor, the response from these people about their rights, or even the comments made by Psychologists assessing the emotional and mental damage this would have upon the individuals? We have fallen a long way from what Paul suggests. In Proverbs it talks about loving a rebuke, being thankful for correction yet whenever someone challenges us about an issue our reaction can be very defensive and sometimes abusive. The reason why people need to be challenged about their sin is that it has the potential to drive them away from God and jeopardise their place in heaven in eternity. Should we not welcome correction or warnings from others who can see our shortcomings? Sometimes our view can be so narrow. We can be more concerned about our current predicament instead of looking to the future and endure some hardship to reach a more complete destiny. There is also such wisdom contained within these verses about listening to the complaints of others regarding church elders. Unfortunately, people are only too quick to make judgements about people based on one person’s account. I recently read a story to my children about a kind-hearted baseball coach. Each Saturday after the game he would walk back home past a fruit shop and select an apple from one of the stalls and continue on his journey home. One day a young boy noticed the baseball coach picking up an apple from the fruit shop and walking on home. To the boy it looked like stealing. The boy then proceeded to tell his parents who then told others until the rumour had spread all over the town. The next Saturday the coach was surprised to find that no one had turned up to play baseball apart from one student. The student sadly relayed the story to the coach who then explained his routine to the student. The coach had an arrangement with the fruit shop owner each Saturday morning. He would pay for an apple on the way to the baseball game and would collect the apple on the way back home. What looked like stealing had only turned out to be a misunderstanding. The boy who had started the rumour was then informed of his misunderstanding. The boy felt terrible and wanted to make it up to the coach. The coach agreed to give him the opportunity and asked him to meet him down by the baseball mound with a feather pillow and some scissors. The boy agreed. Upon his arrival the coach explained to him the damage done by spreading stories before finding out all the facts. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 12 DAY 12 1 Timothy 5:17-25

The coach then told the boy there was something he could do. He asked the boy to cut open the pillow and shake all the feathers out of the pillow. The boy followed these instructions. The coach then told him to pick up all the feathers. The boy told the coach how difficult it would be. The coach then used this to explain to the boy how difficult it was to erase from people’s minds the story the boy told about the coach. It makes you think, doesn’t it?

Prayer I need your help to become a person who likes correction. I open my heart right now to receive correction and discipline from you. Help me also to become wise and discerning. I don’t want to join in any gossip or to side with people’s stories when I don’t know the full story. However, there are times when I easily slip. To overcome this weakness I need your help. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 13 DAY 13 1 Timothy 6:1-2

1 Timothy 6:1-2 “All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them.”

In the western world, we don’t have slaves but the advice is still helpful for the way in which we should treat our employers. What a wonderful witness it can be when we choose to work hard for our employers. There is a particular building company in our city that always asks for ‘those Christian guys’ to work for them due to their work ethic. This kind of request is thrilling to me. It means that people within our church are demonstrating a godly lifestyle. This in turn makes an impact upon the world. They come to realise that Christians can be relied upon and trusted. I wonder what people would say of your work ethic and attitude towards your employer? It is sometimes difficult not to join in with someone who is complaining about their boss when they have been unfairly treated and perhaps you have had a similar experience, especially when we have a Christian employer. For some reason we put added expectations upon them as to how we should be treated because they are Christians. However, Paul is encouraging the one who is serving to ‘work all the harder’ because their efforts are helping others. We certainly live amongst a completely different mind set in our society. We live amongst people who ‘have their rights’ and even if they weren’t demonstrating a good work ethic it is more difficult these days to let them go as an employer. I do understand that there are some very difficult and unfair people out there in the work force. However, when we work we are doing it for the Lord, therefore our attitudes and responses should be like Christ. We should be patient, kind, good, long suffering, and loving – sound familiar. Our responsibility is to hold up the name of Jesus and his standards for his kingdom in every situation. Let me encourage you today, in whatever working environment you find yourself, whether at home, school, university or in the work force, to work hard and to give respect. Everything we do is for the sake of the gospel. Let us therefore demonstrate to this world the light of Christ.

Prayer Today I come before you with a thankful heart. Thank you for the positions in society you have placed me. I ask that you empower me to work hard and show respect for the people I work for and work with. I want to be a shining example of you. Help me to shine. I ask that you keep me from the temptations that would lure me into any agreement with a bad work ethic. I want to hold up your standard. Give me opportunities today to stand out. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 14 DAY 14 1 Timothy 6:3-5

1 Timothy 6:3-5 “If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.”

No one likes an argument. I think the worst situations over the years have been arguments with so called ‘Christians’ who are fighting over their interpretation of the Bible. It is just meaningless. People can get all hot tempered and think they are right and try and force their opinions on others with such aggression and ferocity. I remember just recently going to a conference that had an international guest speaker preaching. This man, who will remain anonymous, is a godly, soft- hearted man whom God is using powerfully in the miraculous. Out the front of the conference, however, stood a man holding a placard. The placard had some mean spirited words declaring how the guest preacher wasn’t from God and that he was a false teacher. The visiting preacher was undisturbed by the man. However this man was quite grumpy in his response to the people who would walk by him making their way into the conference venue. He was trying to convince them of their error using all sorts of scriptures. Those of us in the meetings were enjoying the presence of God, witnessing wonderful healings and being encouraged by the preaching. Despite what was happening in the meetings there was no convincing this man. Instead the conference conveners gave him lunch and drinks while he continued his stance. Eventually the man left and did not return. It was a pity that the man hadn’t gone to the same time and effort to lead someone to Christ. We can get caught up with all sorts of causes that are really worthless and time wasting. Jesus encourages us to choose the battles we are to fight. This is a simple process of asking the Lord whether the things that may stir something in our hearts are worth fighting for. The things that are worth fighting for are the souls of men and women. We can battle in prayer and spend our time and energy loving them and reaching out to them in acts of kindness and support.

Prayer Help me to fight for what is right. Let me first start by fighting for my own righteousness and faith. Then let the causes that I put my efforts into, be the things that please your heart. Today help me to be kind, loving, patient and understanding. I want to be led and guided by you. I love you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 15 DAY 15 1 Timothy 6:6-10

1 Timothy 6:6-10 “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

To be content with what we have is truly a challenge in this world that is fuelled by greed and propelled by marketing. We are in a consumer driven society of wants. There are so many people who long to be rich. To long for something means you desire it, think about it, hunger after it and perhaps will compromise in order to possess it. Buying a lottery ticket is so popular with many people because of their desire to be rich and get rich without any effort or little sacrifice. There is nothing wrong with having money. There are many people within the kingdom of God that have the gift of giving. There is no giving without having things to give away. Therefore I am all for creating wealth. However if that wealth sits in your bank account year after year or goes to buy property or possessions for yourself and not for the good of others then I have a problem with that. Wealth was never meant to build someone’s personal kingdom. It is meant to build the kingdom of God and support the body of Christ. In verse 10 it says ‘the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil’. The root system of a tree will supply it with all the necessary nutrients for the tree to flourish and produce fruit. If the root of your life is the love of money then what you will be drawing upon to grow the tree of your life will be things like greed, selfishness, covetousness, deception and lying. These ingredients will produce bad fruit in our lives and will ultimately be to our own and others detriment. Verse 10 aptly defines it as being pierced with many sorrows. If, however, we have the love of God as our root then our tree of life will produce the life that Jesus promised us – a life of abundance. When we seek first the kingdom of God, we won’t go without. We will have all we need and more. Recently we have suffered a global economic meltdown. At its roots was the love of money. Men who didn’t seemingly have enough wanted more. They weren’t satisfied with billions of dollars. How incredulous that is! That is an example of the love of money and the repercussions of such greed goes beyond their own sorrow and inflicts hardship and sorrow on others. If we lived according to the kingdom of God then we wouldn’t have this kind of a mess to clean up and there definitely wouldn’t be poverty!

Prayer I thank you that you have the power to clean up any kind of mess. You see our global economy. I ask that this would be an opportunity for you to move upon the hearts of men and women and to bring them to an understanding of you. Help me to be content in my situation. I know that when I put you first then you will provide for me. I put my trust in you for my future. I repent of any love or attachment I may have towards money. I love you first; therefore all these things will be added to me. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 16 DAY 16 1 Timothy 6:11-16

1 Timothy 6:11-16 “But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. akeT hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.”

What a wonderful exhortation for Timothy! I love that Paul first declares that Timothy is a man of God. He then goes on to encourage him to live this godly life. Did you know that you too are a man/woman of God? We think that we must first prove we are men or women of God before someone will give us this title. When you are born again you are a man or woman of God. I want you to believe this to be true. It is then easier to allow this declaration over your life to have an effect upon you. I remember when my son was about 2 years old and I would have different people telling me about the ‘terrible 2’s’. I was told I shouldn’t be surprised if my child would throw tantrums or break every rule in the house. I didn’t want to accept this as true. I know my son wasn’t perfect in his behaviour but instead of declaring the title of ‘terrible 2 year old’ I began declaring other titles over his life. I started saying to Jonathan whenever I had to correct him, ‘you’re a good boy Jonathan, this isn’t you, you’re a good boy’. I wanted to give him a title to live up to. The more I declared that over his life the more he responded in a positive way. I must say that that season of his life was wonderful. I didn’t have a ‘tantrum throwing’ son. Instead I watched the ‘good boy’ emerge. Paul then goes on to encourage Timothy to pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. We have to pursue these things. They don’t come naturally to us. You have to chase after this godly lifestyle. The reason being, it is not in our nature to want to do good, instead, we have a sinful nature. We are warring the Bible says against the works of the spirit. Instead we want to live in the flesh. We have to train ourselves to get up early in the morning and seek God; we have to train ourselves to forgive the people that hurt us. It is a fight to be transformed into living and thinking according to the kingdom of God. When we win the fight however, the benefits far outweigh the effort we have gone to. We find such joy, such peace, and such fulfilment when we live according to God’s ways. Thankfully our fight doesn’t have to be on our own. We can draw upon the power of the Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth. He is known as our helper and therefore will help us live godly lives. I am always trying to ‘tune into’ the voice of the Holy Spirit. He will tell me when something is wrong. If I obey that prompting then I am led into a godly lifestyle. Simple!

Prayer I thank you that you have declared that I am your child. If I am your child then you have given me the power to live as your child. Help me today Holy Spirit to live this godly life you have called me to. I know you want to bless me in every way and I know that the blessing you have for me is within your kingdom. Let you kingdom come. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 17 DAY 17 1 Timothy 6:17-21

1 Timothy 6:17-21 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you.”

Again Paul gives instructions for the rich. The rich can so easily put their trust in their money. Those of us who aren’t rich can put our trust in our job, our talents, our position or who people say we are. These things are variables. They can all change. We can lose our job, lose our position or find that our talent isn’t as good as someone else’s. People’s opinions of us can change too. Many people have put their trust in stock markets and in investments they have made. With the collapse of the economy recently, all this ‘stored up’ money has disappeared. This has placed people in a state of fear and anxiety. As Christians, even if we were to lose money in a stock market crash, should we panic? Certainly not! God is our provider. He is our redeemer. Therefore we can trust that he will turn all things around for good. I love how Paul puts it; ’be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others’ Instead of showing off a big bank balance, as the rich would pride themselves in doing, the Bible is exhorting us to a completely different model. It’s more about what works you did with the money. Our celebration shouldn’t be in the world’s rich list but rather in a deeds list. If there was anyone that would stand out in being a millionaire of good works it has to Mother Theresa. Her good works for the poor were certainly building up a big balance in heaven. She definitely stored up riches in heaven not based on how much money she had but rather in how much she gave. We therefore need never to feel bad if we don’t have the resources in order to give. Giving goes beyond money. We can give of our time, our energy, our prayers, our encouragement, our faithfulness, and our faith. There is always a supply of good works. I think of the Urban Life Coaches that serve in our church. They are always giving in some way. Their giving is then being used by God to encourage and build the body of Christ. That is being rich. When I go to heaven I can take people with me. The people that I have led to Christ, the people that I have spent time encouraging in their faith, the people that I have demonstrated the love of God to and therefore brought closer to the Lord. All this may not appear on a bank statement but it does have an effect upon eternity.

Prayer Help me to live for eternity and not be caught up in living for this world. I want to be able to store up riches in heaven where moth and rust cannot destroy. Today help me to be rich in good works. I let go of my reliance on anything else other than you. I trust you implicitly. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 18 DAY 18 2 Timothy 1:1-4

2 Timothy 1:1-4 “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.”

Paul writes again to Timothy and begins with a prayer for grace, mercy and peace. Let us refresh our memory about these 3 powerful words. Paul is praying for unmerited favour, the ability to cover someone’s mistakes and a reassurance in the heart of Timothy that everything is going to be ok because God is in control. What a wonderful way to start the day meditating on these truths. This passage also reveals a few things about Paul’s life. He was a loyal friend to Timothy. It is wonderful to find good friends that you can love and trust. Paul’s commitment to Timothy as a friend goes beyond sentiment though. Paul prays for Timothy day and night. This is a big commitment to someone. There are so many things to pray about. Usually the things that we hold dear to our hearts are the things we pray about the most. Obviously Paul loved Timothy and this was reflected in the time he spent in prayer. We should be praying as Paul did, day and night. We should pray for our loved ones with great passion. There is so much that God can do when we come to him prayer. I can’t begin to tell you all the prayers that God has answered for me over the years. The list would be too long. There have been immediate answers and answers that have taken more time but still God has moved on my behalf. The Bible says the ‘effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.’ This means that when our hearts are in it there is a greater result. People can pray religious unemotional prayers. Imagine you were God having to listen to that kind of a conversation? Boring! Prayer is relationship. The best relationships involve our emotions. Even though Paul and Timothy were separated Paul’s emotional connection caused him to pray constantly for Timothy day and night. Sometimes we may try and shut down our emotions when coming to the Lord in prayer. I think I’m the most emotional when I pray. I want to be myself when I talk to God. I will therefore let my true emotions show. When I feel unjustly treated I will tell God exactly how I am feeling. When I fell sad about a situation I won’t hide it or hold back. God wants an honest relationship with us. Let’s make sure we are real and that we take the time to communicate honestly and regularly to God.

Prayer I know you want me to be real with you. Today I ask that you will help me to take down all the barriers between us. I want to know you more and build upon my relationship with you. I now bring before you all the people that I love. (Start telling God all the people that you think of to pray about today) I ask that your grace, mercy and peace be upon them and that you would bless them in every way possible. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 19 DAY 19 2 Timothy 1:5-7

2 Timothy 1:5-7 “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

There is so much contained within these few verses that I feel we need to analyse it all. There is something so powerful about faith that is genuine. People are looking for the ‘real deal’. When you hang around someone who is genuine about his or her belief in God then there is an underlying passion that inspires you to lift your faith also. Then when you see their faith impact upon a situation or a person seeing a change as a result, you are drawn to hunger after this genuine faith too. Not only did Timothy have this kind of faith but also he came from a generational line of faith filled people. His mother and grandmother were both women of faith. This is the great thing about the generations that have gone before us. Because we have seen, heard and experienced the results of their faith we are then given a boost in our own faith. Surely my children will start their journey of faith in a higher position. Paul then goes on to encourage Timothy about fanning into flame the gifts of God within him. This says to me that the gifts that we have been given by God should burn within us. Fire and passion will have a far more reaching and profound impact than mediocrity and complacency. Those who have impacted our world have done so with a burning desire within them that has compelled them to work and sacrifice to see their dreams realised. If Paul is reminding Timothy to fan into flame then there is the inference that our passion regarding our gifts can wain. However, Paul then goes on to identify the enemy to operating in our gifts – fear. Paul encourages Timothy not to fear because fear doesn’t come from God. Fear can attach itself to us in all sorts of strange ways. Fear can manifest as insecurity, shyness, and fear of failure or embarrassment. We can convince ourselves that we are not afraid of something just because it doesn’t have the typical label of fear. The opposite of fear is faith and Timothy is known for his genuine faith. The enemy will always attack our strengths with the exact opposite. Maybe someone is confident, but then the enemy will use pride to try and distort confidence. Someone else may have a great capacity for compassion and the enemy will attack with depression. We need to recognise these enemies and instead access the love, power and a sound mind that Paul is saying does come from God. Love – nothing can separate us from the love of God. Power – He has given us the power to overcome. Sound mind – we have the mind of Christ. Today, fan into flame the gifts of God within you and let your genuine faith see you accomplish all that God has for you to do today.

Prayer You are so amazing! You have placed so many truths within your word that will propel me further in my destiny. Today I come against every obstacle to my gifts operating. I stand against the spirit of fear and instead I put on love, power and a sound mind. May today be a day of great victory and accomplishment! APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 20 DAY 20 2 Timothy 1:8-12

2 Timothy 1:8-12 “So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.”

Shame is a powerful emotion. It can cause us to retreat, become silent and stand motionless in many situations. It can stop us from speaking out; standing up and can allow circumstances to roll over us. Many people in society suffer from all sorts of shame due to the actions of sin of either themselves or others. One of the saddest expressions of shame is when people are too afraid to share their faith. You cannot compare the shame you feel when you have sinned to the shame you could feel about the gospel. This to me is false shame. There is nothing to feel ashamed about when talking to others about Jesus. I know there are some people that can ridicule your beliefs. I know they are very good at mocking you or embarrassing you. However, this is the western world’s expression of persecution for our faith. I think it pales into insignificance when you look at what others go through for the sake of the gospel in other countries. There are hundreds of Christians every day that will be tortured, beaten and even killed for the sake of Christ. Our shame over the gospel comes from selfishness. We don’t want to be ridiculed; we don’t want to have a tainted reputation at work for being “the Christian”. If this is the extent of our suffering for Christ then I think we can all cope. The important thing to remember is that when we are ‘payed out’ for being a Christian then we are fellowshipping with Jesus and knowing what he went through for us helps us love him all the more. We also mustn’t forget that these people who condemn us are missing out on the life giving power of a personal relationship with Jesus. We can’t just keep all this good news to ourselves. I think people are less likely to mock us if we just share naturally what God has done or said to us just as they naturally share their weekend adventures. We also have the power of God to help us. “With the strength God gives you”, Paul says we will be able to stand unashamed of the gospel. We never have to do anything alone and in our own strength. Our strength can run out. Shame can override us. However, if we learn to call upon God for his help then we will be empowered and be able to stand against any kind of persecution. It’s just like the stories you will hear about martyrs, even up to the point of death they will be at peace, or even reaching out in love to their attackers. This is miraculous and this same power is available to us every day.

Prayer Today I ask for your power to fend off shame and live a life of boldness. Help me not to shrink back and take every opportunity to tell others about you. I let go of my reputation and I ask that you would establish me in life as a true follower of you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 21 DAY 21 2 Timothy 1:13 – 18

2 Timothy 1:13 – 18 “What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.”

Patterns give our lives structure. We have patterns that extend to every area of our life. We may have a pattern of eating that’s either positive or negative. We can have patterns of dressing, thinking, relating, behaving and of learning. Our lives are either prosperous or difficult depending on the kinds of patterns we live by. As Christians, our faith is built when we have developed patterns of church attendance, devotions, service and prayer. These patterns ensure we are relating to God on a constant basis. The pattern that Paul is exhorting Timothy to follow is grounded in wholesome teaching. That is why it is important to formulate our life patterns on the word of God and not the latest trend or philosophy. These are likely to change because they are a result of people’s desire to bandaid the arousal of popular opinion. It’s like the crowd that followed Jesus in his day that one moment was worshipping him and the next day crying out, “Crucify him!” The Bible encourages us not follow after the patterns of the world but to be transformed in our thinking. Our thinking patterns have a great deal to do with living a wholesome life. If we are in the habit of thinking negatively then our natural expectations of God can be negative. If we have a positive mindset then our expectation of God will be positive. This pattern of thinking is as simple as viewing everything from a positive angle. Is the glass half full or half empty? Then there is our pattern of speech. Are we always cynical, mocking, ridiculing others for a laugh? Or do we have a pattern of encouragement and belief? Then there are the eating patterns of our society that are really proving a problem with eating disorders and obesity being two of the areas we have to find solutions for. What are your patterns? Do you have positive, life- giving patterns based on the word of God or do you need to readjust a few things? Let me encourage you to embrace the good wholesome patterns that Paul is referring to. They will cause your life to improve and your fulfilment to increase. God wants the best for you and his patterns for successful living will connect you to the life that Jesus came to bring – abundant life.

Prayer You are the one I follow and I want my patterns of living to line up with your word. I ask you Holy Spirit to empower me to live this life you want for me. I repent of all the worldly patterns that are part of my life. Set me free of all my negative thoughts, responses and attitudes. Take me life Lord and shape it according to your pattern. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 22 DAY 22 2 Timothy 2:1-2

2 Timothy 2:1-2 “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.”

“Be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ.” God has given us all grace. What is grace? It is unmerited favour but it goes further in this context. It is the power to call on the resources of heaven for a particular situation, calling on an ability that isn’t natural for us. I have encountered this kind of grace in my life. When I first started writing songs for worship I tapped into an ability that my natural talents or training hadn’t afforded me. It was something that as I asked God to release over my life it began to flow. It is true that I can’t write music. However, I get these melodies in my head that go over and over and I use them in my own worship of God. When wanting to put these songs on paper, I then gain the help of some wonderfully talented people that will help me see these songs materialized. (Thank you Joth!) God doesn’t want us to have to be strong in ourselves. Rather, he wants us to draw upon his grace to be strong. It’s not what we do for him that gives us access to this strength it is simply his generosity that is outpoured when we call out to him for help. We need to let God be God and allow him to do what he does best. Sometimes my daughter will take on responsibility for certain tasks around the house. She came to me last night and asked whether the rubbish bins had been taken out for collection. It was lovely that she had thought about this but I told her that she could let that responsibility go because that was something that ‘daddy’ took care of. Sometimes we take up responsibility for things that God would do a much better job of completing. Sometimes we think that we have to be strong. All we need to be is strong in the Lord. His power flowing through us is far greater than our own power. Another important part of the verses we have just read is Paul’s encouragement to Timothy to pass on these important truths to other trustworthy people. Leaders need to be trustworthy. There needs to be evidence that what people are teaching lines up with the word of God but is also being outworked in their lives. We can then know that the truth that is being taught is true. Whenever I preach a message at church that message has first been applied to my life. If I’m not living what I’m teaching then I do not have the authority to teach it. We find it very difficult in this day and age to trust people. However, it is something that we need to develop. It is easy to see whether what people say is true by examining their lives and become fruit inspectors. When the fruit they produce is good then we can put our trust in them. I would think that after all these years with leading worship with the same passion and enthusiasm that people would believe that at Planetshakers we are true God-seekers and believe in the power of Jesus to change and enrich your life – yet sadly there are still the cynics. Perhaps today we could make a step towards a greater trust and realise the fruit of our ministry speaks loud and strong.

Prayer Today I ask for your strength to do what you have called me to do. Even though I might not possess the qualifications I call on your power to flow through me. I surrender to your grace. I allow you to be God because with you nothing is impossible. I also ask you to help me to trust those that display good fruit. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 23 DAY 23 2 Timothy 2:3-7

2 Timothy 2:3-7 “Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.”

Paul uses a soldier, an athlete and a farmer to help illustrate our attitude towards challenges. I’m sure we could relate in some way to these different people. Firstly let’s look at the life of a soldier. A soldier’s job is to defend the land in which they reside or the kingdom to which they have pledged their allegiance. They are to risk their lives to fight against any enemy that would try and usurp the leadership of the land. Their primary role is to follow orders. A great illustration of this is found in Luke 7:1-10. The Roman Officer understood the power of the command. A soldier is also trained to endure hardship. They realise in order to win a battle there will be a fight. How many of us buckle under the pressure of various circumstances instead of realising the command that has gone out from Jesus – that we are more than conquerors, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us and that God will work all things together for good. We therefore need to stand our ground in faith until the battle is won and Christ’s authority is established. The second illustration of an athlete helps us to realise that an athlete’s ability to succeed is based on his/her ability to train hard. We need to be trained and ready for any sort of situation. I used to train morning and night as a swimmer. I would get up each morning at 4:30am and head down to the pool and train from 5 till 7am 6 days a week. This was to prepare me for competition. The harder I trained the faster I became therefore increasing the likelihood of success. How many of us would get up early each morning and spend time talking to God and reading his word in order to be ready for success? It certainly is challenging. The third example is that of a farmer. The principal of sowing and reaping is one of those irrefutable laws of God. Whatever you sow, you will reap. If you sow bitterness, unforgiveness, selfishness, gossip then you will reap exactly that. If you sow love, patience, kindness, forgiveness and encouragement then you in turn will reap that. A hardworking farmer is entitled to receive what they have sown first. Paul encourages Timothy to think about what he was saying. Maybe we need to take a moment to think about how this can be applied to our lives. We need to have a fighting spirit; one that will not give up until the victory has been won. We need to train ourselves for battle and we need to work hard to sow a good crop. We can then expect to receive a great reward of victory in every circumstance.

Prayer I want to be able to fight for what you have already purchased for me with your death on the cross. I know you have already won the battle for my freedom, redemption and eternal life. I want to be ready for any of life’s situations, ready to stand and fight and see the victory won. I ask for your help. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 24 DAY 24 2 Timothy 2:8-10

2 Timothy 2:8-10 “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.”

I love the statement of Paul’s “But the word of God cannot be chained.” These words are so powerful and should greatly encourage us. The word of God is powerful. In Isaiah 55:11 it says; “It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” What an amazing scripture. When God says it, it will happen. Sometimes we get tired of waiting when some words from God take time to happen but we must realise that no matter how long it may seem, God’s word will come to pass. When God spoke to me about marrying my husband, it took 3 years. When God spoke to me about having children it took 3 years to happen. Maybe God has spoken to you about something and you are still waiting for it to happen. Let me encourage you to not lose heart but stand upon the word of God. It will happen. I think of the prophets who prophesied Jesus coming to this earth to save mankind. They were never afforded the luxury of seeing the word of God come to pass but it did. There is one very important factor in all of this. You must make sure the word you are standing on is from God. Sometimes people simply desire something really badly and they can convince themselves that it is from God. When hearing from God, especially about really important things, like who we are going to marry, we must get some sort of confirmation of its authenticity. This is why wisdom is found in the counsel of many and why placing yourself under the cover of leadership is so important. People have come to me over the years to get my prayerful consideration of their career choice, the person they should marry and if it was right to give away large sums of money. I have always been diligent to pray and ask the Lord to speak to me. Especially in the area of marriage, I have always felt confident when a couple is affirmed by many of the people that surround them like their parents, friends, siblings and general church people. When ‘all the ducks are in a row’ it helps to confirm that they have heard from God. However, if there isn’t that same breadth of confirmation then I feel it necessary to wait and to continue to pray until there is change, either in people’s opinions or the hearts of the individuals that want to get married. When we know something is based on the word of God then when the storms of life come we have his word to hold onto. We can’t possibly be led astray. God’s word cannot be chained!

Prayer I know your word is powerful. Please help me today to believe your word above my circumstances. Help me to trust in, rely upon and believe in your word. I know once you speak your word it will produce fruit. Let the fruit of your word be evident in my life. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 25 DAY 25 2 Timothy 2:11-14

2 Timothy 2:11-14 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself. Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.

I love verse 13, “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.” What a wonderful reassurance of the character of God. We can let God down in all sorts of ways yet he will remain faithful. The word faithful in this scripture comes from the Greek word; Pistos which means; trusty, faithful - of persons who show themselves faithful in the transaction of business, the execution of commands, or the discharge of official duties. A dictionary meaning of faithful is simply someone who is full of faith. Do we realise that Jesus is full of faith regarding us. He loves us so much and his heart is brimming with an expectation of a good outcome. In Philippians 1:6 Paul writes to tell us of the good work of Jesus Christ. “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (NIV) The work he has begun is a good work. That conjures up all sorts of wonderful images of blessing and favour. It’s just like when God created the heavens and the earth and said that it was good. What God has in mind for us is good. Although we may not live the perfect life, that will not change God’s attitude towards us. That is why he is so good at turning bad situations around into good ones. Our church is filled with stories of God turning lives, marriages, children, businesses and circumstances around. This is when the love of God shines the brightest. To see the tears of joy when a mother’s son comes back to the Lord or someone being healed of cancer waving their test results around above their head. This is all good. This is our faithful God. We can therefore put our trust in his faithfulness. This scripture tells us that faithfulness is part of his nature and he can’t possibly turn his back on who he is. I think that is a pretty ‘iron clad’ contract, one that will not and cannot be broken. Thank God!

Prayer You are so faithful. I know you cannot let me down because simply it isn’t part of your nature or your character. Please help this revelation settle into my heart. Let it become a foundation which I can build me faith upon. I thank you too that you will never let me down. You’re the best! APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 26 DAY 26 2 Timothy 2:15 – 26

2 Timothy 2:15 – 26 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”[a] and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”

What we talk about to others can be quite powerful and influential. When we talk foolishly the Bible is saying that it leads to more godless behaviour. This would infer that foolish talk is godless behaviour. What is foolish talk? I believe gossip is foolish talk. Usually our motive is we want our opinions, observations and experiences with a particular individual that have been negative to be validated by someone else. We want partnership or agreement with a wrong attitude or offense so we feel better about ourselves. We want to justify our wrong attitude. Usually when we gossip to a friend we will get consoled about the wrong we have suffered. This completely goes against what the Bible says about forgiveness and if we have something against a brother or sister in Christ then we should go directly to them. Our gossip can also influence the attitude of others towards that person you are judging. I have often seen husbands and wives guilty of this offense when they side with their spouse instead of directing them to respond the way Jesus wants us to. I remember crying to my husband about a situation of offense in my life. I felt justified by my response. I was expecting him to side with me. Instead he challenged me to let it go and forgive that person. This response was hurtful and difficult for me to swallow at the time, yet it led towards a godly reaction. This was far more beneficial in the long run. Instead of being led down the path towards more godliness I was challenged to react as Jesus would. I was then able to forgive and allow God to fill my heart with love for that individual. That is true freedom. Paul talks about pursuing righteous living, faithfulness, love and peace. Many of us would rather pursue promotion. Rarely do I hear of the inspiring pursuits after righteousness. When was the last time you heard someone talked about being tempted in an area and being pleased to overcome that temptation through the power of Jesus? Instead we like to hide the struggles of our heart. Instead of trying to improve the areas of our characters we would much prefer to improve our skill base. Skills open doors for opportunity in the world’s view. However, whenever I consider a person to be involved in a position of leadership or influence I always like to examine their character. Good character will ultimately lead to greater works because it leads to more godliness. Perhaps you feel challenged today to make some adjustments about what you talk about. Remember, foolish talk leads to more ungodliness and I’m sure that is not the path you desire to be on. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 26 DAY 26 2 Timothy 2:15 – 26

Prayer I want to pursue righteousness. Please help me to be mindful of this pursuit. Help me also to watch what I say. I know that when someone has offended me I need to go to them and not my friends. Give me the boldness to gently share my struggles and the strength to resolve any issue, even if it means I come out second best. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 27 DAY 27 2 Timothy 3:1-9

2 Timothy 3:1-9 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.”

How close does this description come to our current day? As you read these words I can’t help but think of the many news reports that come our way that depict this very era we are now living in. It is sad and a little eye-opening to think we could be living in the ‘last days’. Some Christians I know would be thrilled with the thought. I have mixed emotions regarding the last days. To think that the door of opportunity for mankind to be saved would be drawing to a close is very sobering. The challenge for us as Christians is not to join in on this kind of behaviour. We can be in the world but not of the world. There is a vast difference. Do people see that you are different by the life style you live? In living this different life-style we are not to judge others but simply let the life of righteousness speak. When you live righteously there is a greater peace that is naturally an outworking. This will speak volumes to others who need medication or alcohol to give them some sort of peace. They may even need sleeping pills to help them sleep. When they see your life of peace they will naturally become curious as to the source of your calm well-being. I chose not to drink alcohol. In today’s society where alcohol causes such problems I see it as a smart choice. You would be so amazed at the impact this has on people. Without condemning them, I can demonstrate through my life style the true joy and satisfaction that life with Christ as my saviour can bring. Maybe there are things that you do that can silently speak to those around you of the greatness of knowing Jesus. It might be as simple as always being friendly to a grumpy check out chick, or that difficult person that no one likes at the office. Whatever your opportunity let me encourage you to not get discouraged by the times we live in and the difficult people that surround us but instead use it as an opportunity to shine for Jesus. There is this coffee shop that I frequent near our office. Initially the girls that would serve you were unwilling to interact. They were more concerned about serving you and getting you out of the way than to connect in any way. At times their manner could be considered rude. Many of us at the office have been consistently friendly. Although it has taken many months these girls are finally softening. They smile and will engage in small conversations. This to me is exactly how we should be as Christians. We are the light of the world. We shouldn’t expect people to treat us well who are in the dark. We, however, can make a huge impact upon them with our consistent demonstration of the love of God. Why not try it today.

Prayer As I go throughout my day today please help me not to get so easily offended by the way people treat me. Instead I ask for you to empower me to shine. Let your love pour through me and help my display of righteousness inspire others to enquire of you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 28 DAY 28 2 Timothy 3:10-17

2 Timothy 3:10-17 “You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

We perhaps don’t want to hear about persecution for our faith in Jesus. It conjures up all sorts of dreadful images. I have found the most inspiration however in the testimonies of people who have suffered for Jesus. This is where the authenticity of Jesus is proven to its fullest extent. When we are willing to suffer pain or loss for the sake of Christ then we are being true witnesses. I think of the apostle John who was tortured for his faith in Jesus. They even went to the extent of lowering him into a vat of boiling oil. He did not die so eventually they banished him to isle of Patmos where he had the most incredible end-times visions and communications with Jesus. His endurance positioned him for the supernatural. Stephen, the first martyr, saw heaven open and Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father. When we stand for Christ despite adverse circumstances it releases his supernatural power. We should never be afraid of persecution because at the point of the worst of it, Jesus is right beside us to help us. Another important exhortation from Paul is about the word of God. Timothy had been taught the word of God from a boy. This gave him a great foundation on which he could receive Christ. Scripture is also ‘God-breathed’. If something has the breath of God upon it, surely it has a supernatural power upon it too. When we use the word of God we are thus accessing his supernatural power. This power can help us overcome any temptation, heal us of any sickness, set us free from strongholds, empower us and encourage us. I have stood upon the word of God in many situations and see that word shift and move impossible circumstances. Whenever someone is faced with an impossible situation, I will always encourage him or her to get a specific word from God. You can then use this word when you are not feeling great and when you need to build your faith or when the enemy is attacking your thoughts. I used to get attacked at night with thoughts of dying. I finally cried out to God for a word and he said to turn to Psalm 118. This Psalm contains a wonderful sentence that then became the word I used against the enemy in the future. It simply said, “I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.” (NIV) How specific to my situation? It built my faith instantly and I was able to use this “God-breathed” word to defeat the enemy. If you are going through a struggle, let me encourage you to do the same thing. It will give you such victory.

Prayer Help me to understand the power of your word. I can put my trust in your word because you inspire it. I ask you to speak to me specifically today through your word. Give me the word I need to lead me through my situation now and see my circumstances change as they submit to your word. APRIL DEVOTIONAL Day 29 DAY 29 2 Timothy 4:1-8

2 Timothy 4:1-8 “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

There are two aspects that I want to highlight in regard to this passage today. The first being Paul’s encouragement for Timothy is to be prepared, whether the time is favourable or not. Sometimes we wait for the time to be ‘right’ in order to show our full potential or ability. I was accused of doing this when I studied Drama at school. I remember the interval between the first and second acts of the school play that I was performing in. My drama teacher stormed up to me and berated me for my performance. She told me not to do that to her again. She thought I was doing a marvellous job but because I hadn’t demonstrated any of my abilities during rehearsal she was nervous about my performance. She was basically telling me off for holding myself back. I should have been trying my best whether I was on the stage in front of the audience or rehearsing with my friends. How do we work when no one is looking? How much will we do when no one sees our efforts? We also think that everything has to be set up perfectly in order for us to serve the Lord, when a position comes up or when someone believes in our potential. I have been in situations where people have not thought I was a good worship leader. They have openly opposed me. I could have shrunk back thinking that the timing wasn’t right. Instead I just ploughed ahead standing on what I believed God had called me to be. The second aspect is fighting the good fight of faith. There are many enemies to our faith but Paul encourages Timothy to fight on. His life was drawing to a close. He remained in prison. He could have advised Timothy to ‘tone things down’ otherwise he could end up in the same prison. Instead Paul prompts him to keep fighting. Why was he so confident in this? Because Paul knew what rewards awaited him. Paul was not living just for a reward in this life. Too many of us fail to see the significance of our life of faith in eternity. What we are fighting for goes beyond the temporary things of this world. Our reward will be when we see our Saviour and he bestows upon us crowns. These crowns we will then be privileged to lay at the feet of Jesus. Let us not give the enemy an ounce of victory over our faith. Let us fight to illuminate his influence. Let us also fight off the desires of our flesh so that we can be confident of the great reward that awaits us.

Prayer Let me see beyond this temporary world and see the great day where I will stand before you in eternity. I desire to stand before you with an expectation of receiving a reward for the things I have fought for by faith. I pull down every enemy of my faith and I ask you to stir my faith and help my unbelief. I believe in you. APRIL DEVOTIONAL DaY 30 DAY 30 2 Timothy 4:9-22

2 Timothy 4:9-22 “Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments. Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Greet Priscilla[a] and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.”

Paul concludes his letter with a touch of sadness. Just like anyone else, Paul suffers disappointment with the abandonment of his friends when he had to stand up in court. If you have ever been into a courtroom you would know what an intimidating environment it can be. The judge looks ominous and everyone seems quite subdued. I feel for Paul. In all that he has been through he stands alone. Have you ever felt that way? Have you had those words go through your head saying ‘you are all alone’. It can have such a powerful effect upon us. Yet as Paul points out, he wasn’t really alone. God was with him. It was God who rescued him from death and gave him strength as well as the opportunity to share the gospel. We must realise that God will never leave us alone. He promises to be with us always. Even though we might not feel like it, he is always with us. Even in the most intimidating situations he is with us. Paul also asks that his friends come to visit him. Friends are an important part of our lives. They can help to encourage us and keep our faith buoyant whenever we face difficulties. I have prayed for God to bring the right friends into my life. I have had friends that I’ve had to leave behind in my pursuit of God so I began to ask God for him to provide friends for me that would champion the cause of Christ with me. I have since then had many wonderful people come into my life. I’ve even had the opportunity to build friendships with wonderful women of God from overseas. These women are all going in the same direction as me so we can encourage each other in the faith. Although we cannot have the same dependency upon friends as we do upon God we can lean upon good friends. What a blessed life we live. If you don’t have friends that you can really rely upon and move on in God with why not pray like I did and ask God to bring some of these people into your life.

Prayer You have challenged me in so many areas as I have read through these letters to Timothy. I ask that you help this revelation sink into my heart – that you are with me always. I also ask that you will bring great friends into my life. I need friends that are pursuing you like I am; ones that will help support me and build my faith. You are my best friend and I know you will never let me down. I love you.
