Grace, mercy and peace. How powerful are these three words? To have them a part of your life everyday is certainly productive and beneficial. If we look at the first word, grace, it is the unmerited favour of God. This means there is nothing you could possibly do to earn God’s favour. Favour is when you are liked by people, welcomed, looked up to and trusted. It’s like you become someone’s favourite. These days we may liken it to the favour of a movie star. They are popular so they are sought after. Everyone wants to be associated with them. Companies will give them gifts of clothing, jewellery, cars and more just so their product, if seen on a star, is endorsed, therefore influencing others to purchase that product. Someone who is favoured has their needs met. They have access to certain exclusive places; they have the power to influence society. When Paul wrote to Timothy he was expressing his desire to see God bless him with this favour that has already been purchased for us by Jesus.

Several other Australian-based Pentecostal churches demonstrate a similar growth trajectory to Hillsong Church, namely: C3 Church, Citipointe Church, Planetshakers, and Influencers Church. To further scholarly understanding of aspects of this rapid growth, this paper discusses the emergence of economic rationalist policies which led to the neoliberal governance context in Australia. The paper argues that the emergence of this policy context, which emphasises marketization and privatisation, provided opportunities for suburban-based Pentecostal churches to expand activities beyond conducting worship services. The paper analyses materials produced by Hillsong Church, C3 Church, Citipointe Church, Planetshakers, and Influencers Church and associated educational, charity, and financial organisations. Through this analysis, the paper finds that the emergence of a neoliberal governance context in Australia provided opportunities for these churches to expand activities beyond traditional worship ceremonies to include additional activities

BRAZIL: “QUE PAÍS É ESTE”? MUSIC AND POWER IN LEGIÃO URBANA Ana Cláudia Lessa Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2011 0 Abstract This thesis addresses, amongst other issues, the phenomenon of protest music with particular reference to Brazil within its pre- and post-dictatorship period. The time- frame being understood as that which finds its roots many decades prior to the 1964 so-called revolution – a de facto military putsch – and comes to flower in the democratic moment of the 1980s and since. The focus will be, eventually, directed to one of the most celebrated Brazilian rock phenomena, the band Legião Urbana, the impact of which still resonates across the artistic, cultural and political scene in Brazil and beyond. In order to establish the context in which such a claim can be viable, the thesis explores the ideological and historical background to the emergence, on a national, and international, stage of something beyond the artistic and cultural ‗dependence‘ seing before that period within Brazilian music. Much of this growth has been concentrated in a few very large megachurches (defined by scholars as churches with 2000 or more weekly attendees in one location) and new denominations formed as smaller churches became affiliated with them. Globally, the megachurch phenomenon is not exclusive to Pentecostalism. However, in Australia, almost all megachurch developments are Pentecostal, or charismatic and neo-Pentecostal offshoots. This dissertation examines the early life course biography of one of the first Australian megachurches, the Christian Outreach Centre (COC). It reviews events leading up to the founding of the COC in 1974 under a charismatic leader, and its growth and transition over its first 30 years and its development into a national and international denomination.
