Raleigh was as beguiled by Guiana’s landscape (“I never saw a more beautiful country...”) as he was by the prospect of plunder (“every stone we stooped to take up promised either gold or silver by his complexion”). Raleigh’s contemporaries, too, were doubly inspired, writing, as Thoreau says, of Guiana’s “majestic forests”, but also of its earth, “resplendent with gold.” By the eighteenth century, when the trade in Africans was in full swing, writers cared less for Guiana’s beauty than for its mineral wealth. Sugar was the poet’s muse, hence the epic work by James Grainger The Sugar Cane (1764), a poem which deals with subjects such as how best to manure the sugar cane plant, the most effective diet for the African slaves, worming techniques, etc.

Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent.

Grace, mercy and peace. How powerful are these three words? To have them a part of your life everyday is certainly productive and beneficial. If we look at the first word, grace, it is the unmerited favour of God. This means there is nothing you could possibly do to earn God’s favour. Favour is when you are liked by people, welcomed, looked up to and trusted. It’s like you become someone’s favourite. These days we may liken it to the favour of a movie star. They are popular so they are sought after. Everyone wants to be associated with them. Companies will give them gifts of clothing, jewellery, cars and more just so their product, if seen on a star, is endorsed, therefore influencing others to purchase that product. Someone who is favoured has their needs met. They have access to certain exclusive places; they have the power to influence society. When Paul wrote to Timothy he was expressing his desire to see God bless him with this favour that has already been purchased for us by Jesus.
