    HISTORIC AMERICAN LANDSCAPES SURVEY JOHN BARTRAM HOUSE AND GARDEN (Bartram’s Garden) HALS No. PA−1 Location: 54th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, Philadelphia, Independent City, Pennsylvania. Present Owner: City of Philadelphia. Present Occupant: The John Bartram Association. Present Use: Historic botanic garden, public park, and offices of the John Bartram Association. Significance: Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanic garden in the United States. John Bartram (1699−1777), the well-known early American botanist, explorer, and plant collector founded the garden in September 1728 when he purchased a 102-acre farm in Kingsessing Township, Philadelphia County. John Bartram’s garden began as a personal landscape, but with a lifelong devotion to plants grew to become a systematic collection as he devoted more time to exploration and the discovery of new North American species and examples. Its evolution over time both reflected and fostered Bartram’s vital scientific achievements and important intellectual exchange. Although not the first botanic collection in North America, by the middle of the eighteenth century Bartram’s Garden contained the most varied collection of North American plants in the world, and placed John Bartram at the center of a lucrative business centered on the transatlantic transfer of plants. Following the American Revolution, Bartram’s sons John Bartram, Jr. (1743–1812) and William Bartram (1739–1823), continued the international trade in plants and expanded the family’s botanic garden and nursery business. Following his father’s lead, William became an important naturalist, artist, and author in his own right, and under his influence the garden became an educational center that aided in training a new generation of natural scientists and explorers.

    CULTIVATING IMPERIAL IDENTITY: THE GARDEN CITY AND URBAN LANDSCAPES IN LONDON, CALCUTTA AND DELHI, C. 1860-1931 BY KAREN ANN RODRIGUEZ’G DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois of Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Antoinette M Burton, Chair Professor Tony J Ballantyne Associate Professor Dana Rabin Assistant Professor Rini Bhattacharya Mehta ii Abstract My dissertation considers how the cultivation of the garden was tied into the development of the colonial modern in the 19th century and early 20th century, setting in place value systems rooted in the link between horticultural space and urbanity itself in both metropole and colony. By considering the garden as imperial place-maker, I analyze how the garden was transmitted across multiple geographies and scales, foregrounding it as a modern site not just of aesthetic appeal but of disciplinary power. It was at once a mechanism for sifting out the difference between imperial subject and citizen and a space of collective identity in an often turbulent imperial context. The urban morphologies of London, Calcutta and New Delhi – the British imperial capitols studied here – reflect the fractured nature of local, national and imperial debates about open space, the place of the living and the dead, and questions of imperial and even global identity. As a civilizing paradigm, the urban garden landscape both in England and in India solved crises of material and social ills brought on by rapid urbanization, neutralized class consciousness and integrated the working classes and natives into the national/imperial landscape, and regulated both errant English and Indian bodies.

    Issue 65 Spring 2019 John Claudis Loudon by Mary Burns, Rare Book Cataloging Librarian John Claudius Loudon (1783-1843) was one of the most prolific and successful authors of gardening and horti- cultural books and periodicals in the nineteenth century (Fig. 1). He wrote for the new middle class that had developed as a result of the Industrial Revolution. During the course of the nineteenth century almost all aspects of bookmaking technolo- gy became mechanized and cheaper forms of color illustration were developed. Before that time books had been expensive to produce and only the wealthy could afford to buy them. Coin- ciding with these technological developments was a craze for gardens and floraculture in Great Britain. John Loudon’s publi- cations filled a new niche for middle class gardeners looking for guidance. During his lifetime he published roughly 60 million words about gardening, horticulture, architecture, farming, and rural improvements.1 Loudon was born in Scotland, the son of a farmer. Dur- ing his lifetime suburbs came into existence as the new middle class retreated to housing away from the unhealthy, heavily polluted inner cities, an unwelcome by-product of industrializa- tion and progress. He was very liberal minded and promoted the development of public parks and better living conditions for rural workers. He believed that gardening was a form of self-improvement that promoted good morals. Loudon was also very class-conscious. FOREWORD BY MAVIS BATEY PRESIDENT OF THE GARDEN HISTORY SOCIETY We are happy that, for the 25th anniversary of the Garden History Society, Ray Desmond has agreed to produce this up-to-date bibliography of garden history. Since the first committee meeting, when he was appointed Librarian, he has collected information about garden history and historic gardens and made it available to members through bibliographies in the Society’s Newsletter and Journal and to a wider public in his Bibliography of British Gardens. We are indebted to his scholarship and generosity. Perhaps it is a measure of the success of the Society’s campaigning for the relevance and importance of garden history that of the 150 or so books listed only 55 were available in 1965, when the Society was founded by Peter Hunt, who had just completed his Shell Gardens Book. For the entries in it he had called on a variety of expertise and was inspired with the idea of bringing the participants together to exchange ideas. The contributors’ width of expertise, covering horticulture, landscape architecture, history, literature, art, architecture, botany and dendrology made Peter Hunt realize the need to make a cohesive subject of garden history by forming a society to bring these wide-ranging interests together. Shortly after the publication of the Shell guide, Peter Hunt and Miles Hadfield, who in 1960 had published his influential Gardening in Britain, met by arrangement in the buffet of a London railway station (less appropriate than an historic garden perhaps), and discussed the formation of the Garden History Society.

It was a Drespectable and sociable extension of the interest in domestic gardening. It was bloodless and did not require the capture or destruction of animal species and was associated with genteel interests such as flower arranging and painting. It was Christian in its celebration of the creator’s handiwork. It was not a costly pursuit and required only a simple magnifying glass, a vasculum, or tin container, in which to collect samples of freshly-picked plants, paper in which to press plants, and an inexpensive handbook as a guide and an aid to identification. It was also easy and did not necessarily require expert or academic training for its enjoyment. The books in this exhibition are all drawn from the collection of the Library of the Royal Society of Medicine and include illustrated works and detailed and closely-printed taxonomic lists of plant species.     b r e n t e l l i o t t two centuries of repton’s reputation The reputation of Humphry Repton over the last two centuries has not shown the common pattern of decline and revival, but rather one of wobbling between the two phases of his career. During the Victorian period, he was looked on as the founder of modern gardening, his fragments and his plans for the Brighton Pavilion seen as sparking the revival of topiary and the flower garden. The twentieth century saw the increasing dominance of neo-Georgianism in British architecture and gardening, but Repton’s reputation did not suffer greatly as Victorian gardening was repudiated; attention shifted to his early works, seen as the continuation of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s aesthetic. Humphry repton’s reputation has had a degree of stability denied to most of his predecessors and successors. interpretations of his work may have varied, attacks may have been launched, but when one considers the way in which Brown’s reputation plummeted in the nineteenth century, to be relaunched in the mid-twentieth, one must say that repton’s has been enviably stable. there are two main reasons for this. the first is repton’s change of styles in mid-career. He began as the self-appointed successor to Brown, the culminating representative of the english landscape garden; but from c.1800 he began to reintroduce into his schemes formal terracing, flower gardens and other devices that Brown and his coevals had removed, sometimes with gunpowder. so, whatever the fortunes of the landscape style or of the Victorian garden that arose in reaction against it, repton could be held up as an exemplar.

    jan woudstra ‘one of the ablest landscape gardeners’: edward kemp (1817–91) in a nineteenth-century professional context When Edward Kemp was born in 1817, the world of landscape gardening was still dominated by Humphry Repton, who had written the key works, which had also popularized the term ‘landscape gardening’ and provided a theoretical basis. In the years that followed, John Claudius Loudon provided some standard works for landscape gardening, including the suburban gardener (London, 1838), which translated the design principles into a wider range of properties, and catered for the middle as well as upper classes. The emerging profession also saw a considerable widening of its feld of work in which designers were engaged not only in the design of country seats but also with public parks, cemeteries, housing, schools and other institutions. Kemp was very much part of this movement and he participated in the increasing number of design competitions, but not all his entries were successful. One instance when he contributed a design – the competition for Queen’s Park, Manchester – became a celebrated case that focused the debate around public park design. The debate clearly set out some of the parameters of the profession, which from this point onward was divided into two camps: the Paxton School (in which Kemp played a prominent role) and the Marnock School.
