In 1494, the treaty of Tordesillas divided the Americas between Spain and Portugal (Line of Demarcation). Portugal claimed possession of Brazil on 22nd April 1500, as Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Portuguese fleet commander, landed on the coast. Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in 1822. The culture of Brazil is still mainly influenced by the Portuguese. D. Cornell University 2019 This dissertation leverages a phenomenon of racial reclassification in Brazil to shed new light on the processes of identity politicization. Conventional wisdom tells us that the history of race mixture, fluid racial boundaries, and stigmatized blackness lead Brazilians to capitalize on racial fluidity and change their racial identifications—to reclassify—toward whiteness. In more recent years, however, Brazilians have demonstrated a marked and newfound tendency to reclassify towards blackness. I argue that this sudden reversal is the unintended consequence of expanded access to secondary and university education in recent decades, which has led many to develop a racialized political consciousness, what I refer to as political identity. State-led efforts to better include lower-class sectors of the citizenry through educational expansion have increased formerly marginal and newly mobile citizens’ exposure to information, social networks, and the labor market, while also endowing them with greater internal efficacy. Greater exposure and efficacy, in turn, have led many to challenge commonsense racial hierarchies and the national myth of racial unity as they have come face-to-face with racialized inequalities in their quests for upward mobility. Reclassification toward blackness, then, is an articulation of these newfound and racialized political identities. -

We assume that the cartography of a cultural expression is expressed through the representation of the scale of social action in the production of geographical space and has its significance, since we can highlight its concreteness through maps. This work is multi-scale and has conceptual, technical and empirical basis. -

CLEISON LEITE FERREIRA Departamento de Geografia – Universidade de Brasília – Unb [email protected] Expansão geográfica nacional e internacional dos elementos do Maracatu-Nação e a formação de grupos de maracatu no Brasil e no mundo Introdução O Maracatu-Nação é uma manifestação cultural afro-brasileira que tem seu território de origem e de referência identitária a Região Metropolitana do Recife-PE (RMR). Originário no século XIX de antigas práticas sociais da população africana de eleger e coroar reis e rainhas do Congo em Pernambuco, o Maracatu-Nação caracteriza- se por um cortejo real negro que sai às ruas dos centros e das periferias das cidades da RMR. Em momentos festivos, sobretudo no carnaval, desfilam com seus personagens – que são os elementos da corte real – devidamente ornados para a ocasião. São reis e rainhas, príncipes e princesas, vassalos, damas da corte, damas do paço com suas calungas (ou bonecas) e porta pálio (que carrega um grande sombreiro sobre a realeza). Acompanham a corte outros elementos simbólico-religiosos, como orixás, caboclos, ciganas, com seus turbantes, guias ou colares e calungas. Há ainda uma orquestra percussiva que executa a parte musical. Os elementos que compõem a parte percussiva de um Maracatu-Nação são seus instrumentos musicais e seus batuqueiros: alfaia (bombo ou tambor), caixa de guerra, tarol, mineiro e gonguê. Algumas Nações1 têm inovado com outros instrumentos, tais como atabaque, agbê, timbal e patangome. BRAZIL Chapter 11 Art, Literature and Poetry Brazil was colonized by Portugal in the middle of the 16th century. In those early times, owing to the primitive state of Portuguese civilization there, not much could be done in regard to art expression. The original inhabitants of the land, pre-Columbian Indigenous peoples, most likely produced various forms of art, but very little is known about this. Little remains, except from elaborate feather items used as body adornments by all different tribes and specific cultures like the Marajoara, who left sophisticated painted pottery. So, Brazilian art - in the Western sense of art - began in the late 16th century and, for the greater part of its evolution until early 20th century, depended wholly on European standards. 170 BRAZIL Pre-Columbian traditions Main article: Indigenous peoples in Brazil Santarém culture. More recent examples have been found in Minas Gerais and Goiás, showing geometric patterns and animal forms. One of the most sophisticated kinds of Pre- Columbian artifact found in Brazil is the sophisticated Marajoara pottery (c. 800–1400 AD), from cultures flourishing on Marajó Island and around the region of Santarém, decorated with painting and complex human and animal reliefs. Statuettes and cult objects, such as the small carved-stone amulets called muiraquitãs, also belong to these cultures. The Mina and Periperi cultures, from Maranhão and Bahia, produced interesting though simpler pottery and statuettes. -

Opposition Strategy and Survival in Praetorian Brazil, 1964-79 Dale Krane Mississippi State University Opposition groups in authoritarian political systems are constrained not only by the presence of coercive forces, but also by the indeterminate and uncertain application of repres sion. This article suggests the use of Albert Hirschman's rational model of dissent as an analytic framework for the study of interest articulation within mixed regimes. After deriv ing several behavioral attributes associated with dissent, the article then explores the utility of the Hirschman model within the Brazilian context. Several political strategies that allowed opposition forces to survive more than a decade of severe repression by the praetorian regime are examined. Political "safety zones" that permit opposition forces to avoid or neutralize repressive constraints also are identified. The article concludes with an assessment of the framework's potential for comparative research. -
