Do you have any idea of how difficult it is to discuss water quality with people and what they have to do to protect it? It is clear that everyone wants clean water. What is not clear is the administrative presentation (CSO, MS4, Stormwater, SWMP, Direct Discharge) and barriers agencies pose to protect their own jurisdiction. While that may be helpful for the agencies, it is not for the public.

    New York's Post Industrial Waterfront: A Lesson in Environmental Gentrification and Environmental Inequality Kara Murphy Schlichting Department of History, Queens College, City University of New York In 2011, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that New York City had six boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, of course, but he counted the city’s 520-mile long waterfront as well. Bloomberg encouraged New Yorkers to imagine this space as a single unit of public space (Barrett 2016; New York City Department of Planning 2011). In the twenty-first century, the industrial past had finally given way to a reconfigured shoreline of green amenities. Figure 1. The East River at Brooklyn Bridge Park, 2019. The South Bronx shoreline along the Harlem River is one such space. While Bloomberg’s administration courted environmental gentrification on the East River waterfronts of Queens and Brooklyn, the South Bronx did not experience a similar transformation. The concept of political ecology posits that there is an essential relationship between political, economic, and social factors and environmental issues. Building on this framework, I examine environmental gentrification, or the lack thereof, as a function of political ecology (Swyngedouw 1996). Postindustrial 1 interpretations of the Harlem River’s environment reveal the importance of ideas of nature— both polluted and reclaimed—in the rebuilding of New York’s waterfront. Figure 2. Because of the high volume of international trade the New York City region is at the center exposure to invasive plants into the United States. For the same reasons NYC also has the greatest diversity of non-native plants. Invasive species are the leading cause of decreased plant biodiversity in urban landscapes. There are 5,000 acres of forested parks in NYC. Woody invasive vines such as Bittersweet and Porcelain Berry are the most common invasive plants in NYC parks. But because of a limited staff (12 full time gardeners), the Natural Resources Group use small-scale applications of Roundup; no one area can get dedicated attention. And because of low funding and small staff, it is impossible to go back to the same area on weekly bases.

Th e ceremony was an especially nice moment for the ironworkers who erected the building’s steel, as it not only completed the structural steel framework of the building, but also marked the fi rst project in New York City that used an innovative safety netting to further protect workers from injury. I am proud of the investments we have made to provide the safest possible environment for our construction workers. You can read more about our comprehensive construction safety program on page 7. As we build the new campus, projects such as the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering, the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at the Journalism School, Th e Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)Graduate Student Center and the Physics Th eory and Data Analysis Center continue our eff orts to revitalize the Morningside Campus and create the types of spaces where our students, faculty and staff can thrive. I’m thrilled that some of our recent projects have garnered several News for the Employees of awards for industry excellence (page 8), including the Municipal Art Society’s Best New Building and LEED Gold Rating awarded to the Campbell Sports Center and an Columbia University Facilities Excellence in Design award given to the Muscota Marsh by the New York City Public Design Commission.
