For more information, please contact [email protected]. 25 Steve Reich's The Desert Music at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival "For music is changing in character today as it has always done." -WCW (SE 57) On October 25-27, the 1984 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music presented the American premiere of Steve Reich's The Desert Music, a piece for chorus and orchestra setting to music excerpts from three poems by William Carlos Williams, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower," "The Orchestra," and his translation of Theocritus' Idyl I. Michael Tilson Thomas conducted the Brooklyn Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and chorus, and he, the musicians, and the composer received standing ovations after the performances. Steve Reich is one of this country's most promising young composers.

    City & State Grimm Scenarios With Rep. Michael Grimm facing an indictment, there appears to be only one way for him to get off the ballot if Republicans want to run someone else By Jerry H. Goldfeder | Apr 28, 2014 | The anticipated indictment of Rep. Michael Grimm has raised questions about his viability as a candidate and the chances of his Democratic challenger, former New York City Councilman Domenic Recchia. It also has prompted a whirlwind of speculation about if and how he could be replaced as the Republican Party’s nominee. I will leave the political prognosticating for another day. Here I will address the ballot issues. Two sets of rules come into play: New York Election Law and the United States Constitution. According to New York law, designating petitions for the Republican line were due on April 10, and Grimm duly filed them. He had until four days later, April 14, to “decline” the nomination. Candidates do that from time to time for a variety of reasons, usually because they want their Committee to Fill Vacancies (political allies and supporters) to choose a replacement. Declination is rare; in any event, Grimm did not opt to do so. Moreover, no one submitted petitions to run against him in the Republican primary. Grimm is the Republican nominee. Assuming, however, that Congressman Grimm decides to spend his time fighting federal fraud charges and give the Republican Party a chance to run an alternative candidate, could he take his name off the ballot? Unlikely. Generally for state offices, if one moves out of the state or is convicted of a felony, a candidate is no longer eligible for public office.

Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS Once Upon a Time: “Babble and Verse” Saturday, March 19, 2016 Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis To Conduct Philharmonic Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud To Host The 93rd season of the New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concerts (YPCs) will continue on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with “Babble and Verse,” the third program in this season’s series, Once Upon a Time, which explores music inspired by stories, poems, and legends. The concert will feature selections from The Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence Esa- Pekka Salonen’s Karawane, Orff’s Carmina burana, and Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise. Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis will lead the performance; Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host the event, which will be directed and scripted by Tom Dulack and feature actor Jessica Cummings. Attendees are invited to come early to take part in YPC Overtures, at which children meet Philharmonic musicians and try out orchestral instruments on the Grand Promenade and upper tiers of David Geffen Hall, starting at 12:45 p.m. Pre-concert activities inside the hall include live performances by ensembles of Philharmonic musicians of works by Very Young Composers inspired by the YPC’s thematic content. Artists Courtney Lewis began his tenure as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic in September 2014. The 2015–16 season marks Mr. Lewis’s first as music director of the Jacksonville Symphony.
