Anti-Racism Resources Prepared for and by: The First Church in Oberlin United Church of Christ Part I: Statements Why Black Lives Matter: Statement of the United Church of Christ Our faith's teachings tell us that each person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and therefore has intrinsic worth and value. So why when Jesus proclaimed good news to the poor, release to the jailed, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed (Luke 4:16-19) did he not mention the rich, the prison-owners, the sighted and the oppressors? What conclusion are we to draw from this? Doesn't Jesus care about all lives? Black lives matter. This is an obvious truth in light of God's love for all God's children. But this has not been the experience for many in the U.S. In recent years, young black males were 21 times more likely to be shot dead by police than their white counterparts. Black women in crisis are often met with deadly force. Transgender people of color face greatly elevated negative outcomes in every area of life. When Black lives are systemically devalued by society, our outrage justifiably insists that attention be focused on Black lives. When a church claims boldly "Black Lives Matter" at this moment, it chooses to show up intentionally against all given societal values of supremacy and superiority or common-sense complacency. By insisting on the intrinsic worth of all human beings, Jesus models for us how God loves justly, and how his disciples can love publicly in a world of inequality. -

She also leads writing workshops for youth and adults and is the co-editor of YA and Children's Literature for Hunger Mountain, the arts journal of Vermont College. Summer Reading for Incoming 11th Graders Response Essay (50 points) Group Presentation (50 points) Step 1: Choose and obtain one book from the list below to read over the summer before your junior year. Step 2: Read your chosen book and write a response essay to the book of at least 2-3 pages (anything less than 2 FULL pages will lose points). Your response should discuss your thoughts, responses, and reactions to your chosen book considering its themes, characters, plot elements, etc. The point here is to document YOUR responses to a given piece of literature. What makes you like or dislike a book? What grabs your attention? The response essay should follow MLA guidelines for formatting (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1” margins, with proper heading information, and page numbers with last name on top right). Improperly formatted papers will also lose points. Response essays are due the first day of classes. Step 3: During the first week of classes you will work together with others who read the same book to create and deliver a presentation that will educate and interest the rest of the class in the book’s content, literary merits, and author. Muslims in America: A journey in time from slavery to today’s community pillars By Radwa Ahmed, 2020 CTI Fellow Waddell Language Academy This curriculum unit is recommended for: ELA & Social Studies Fourth grades Keywords: Tolerance, African, Muslim, slaves, religion, identity, diversity, stereotypes, culture, immigrants, racism, discrimination. Teaching Standards: See Appendix 1 for teaching standards addressed in this unit. Synopsis: In this unit, students will learn about the American Muslim community with a focus on the challenges a highly diverse population brings to our daily lives. This unit aims at shedding light on the importance of adapting a culture of tolerance, as well as embracing the individual differences. It is about learning to appreciate our differences, and finding how these differences strengthen our community rather than tear it apart. Through a variety of fiction and non-fiction novels and articles, students will meet children and young teens who like many of them struggle with maintaining their identity or fading into the surrounding community. Students will also have the opportunity to research their own heritage, through the Family Heritage Project. The project will allow them to discover, reconnect and share their culture with their peers as well as to learn about their classmates’ culture, and finding things in common in order to create strong relationships. I plan to teach this unit during the coming year to 24 students in ELA & Social Studies in Fourth grade. I give permission for Charlotte Teachers Institute to publish my curriculum unit in print and online. I understand that I will be credited as the author of my work. -

WHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should pause in its deliberations and recognize those outstanding civil rights leaders who, through their exemplary efforts, struggled to realize the noble precepts of liberty and equality for all people; and WHEREAS, one such noteworthy advocate of social justice was Malcolm X whose 77th birthday will be commemorated on May 19, 2002; and WHEREAS, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, Malcolm Little was born to loving parents, Earl and Louis Norton Little on May 19, 1925; and WHEREAS, his mother diligently served as a homemaker raising eight children, while his father was an outspoken Baptist minister and supporter of Black Nationalist leader, Marcus Garvey; and WHEREAS, Earl Little, a civil rights activist, was forced to move his family twice, before Malcolm was four, to avoid persecution for his beliefs on racial equality; and HR0277 01467385 -1- WHEREAS, in 1929, Earl Little was killed and Louise Little suffered an emotional breakdown sometime later and was committed to a mental institution; and WHEREAS, these tragic events forced Malcolm and his siblings to enter various foster homes and orphanages; and WHEREAS, an intelligent and focused student, Malcolm excelled academically throughout junior high school and ranked at the top of his class; and WHEREAS, his ambition as a young man was to become an attorney; however, this dream was short-lived, as he -
