This was further supplemented by studying the Jersey newspapers of those days. More widely, internet resources played their part, with considerable reliance on French MoD sources, and the UK Swimming and Australian National Archives. In Australia’s case, research helped in identifying Old Victorian Chester Church as being killed at Fromelles in 1916, enabling the College to add his name to its Lessons war memorial earlier this year. Furthermore, Chester’s remains were never properly buried at the time. That research, showing at Aquasplash that he was one of 250 men buried by the Germans in a mass grave at Pheasant Wood, has led to the Group locating male relatives with the DNA that may identify him 95 years on. Today’s use of IT has allowed extra features that Ralph Mollet could never have envisaged. The Roll refers to cemeteries or memorials, an impossible feature at the time, given that work to complete their construction continued well into the late 1920s. Group members have ranged far and wide in France, Flanders and Gallipoli to photograph headstones and names from memorials, whilst others provided images of the woebegone Basra Memorial. Main: Historic harbour wall Inset bottom: Atrium view looking north Inset left: Atrium view looking south The Constable offers his views and support The St Helier Roads Committee has supported the J1 development since its inception - as they have also been consistent in their support for Le Masurier's proposals to redevelop the Odeon and the surrounding brown field sites. The Committee has been mindful of the need to preserve the town's important heritage sites, but in the case of J1 the loss of some important structures inside the site has to be balanced against the improved public access between Broad Street and Commercial Street, the opening up of a section of the old harbour wall, and the introduction of water features - this last item at the specific request of the Committee. I argued in the States at the end of 2011 that the ability of the private sector to invest in new accommodation for financial services industry meant that the States did not need to sacrifice its own site, the Esplanade Square car park, for such uses. Unfortunately the States rejected my proposition by 28 votes to 20, so it looks as though visitors, workers and shoppers will face the inconvenience of losing the Esplanade car park to development - even though we are promised the car parking will be replaced below ground! J1, however, will deliver modern offices right in the heart of the town and those who are employed there will play their part in maintaining the viability of our rich and varied range of shops, restaurants, cafes and businesses. The presence of these new offices in Broad Street will also, I am sure, be a catalyst for the further regeneration of Broad Street, so that shoppers will have an alternative to King Street and Queen Street - which, happily, can be quite crowded at times. f Page 22 The Jan 2012 Town Crier Parish notice board Have you something to share with fellow Parishioners? This year students from Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 took part in the trip. Two teachers and four students, who are now in Year 10 but have taken part in the Haute Vallée Avranches project for the last three years conducted the assembly. The assembly showed the rest of the school and the visitors what the students did during their time in Avranches and introduced the project to the new Year 7 students. This new cohort of students are currently writing their first letters and Christmas cards to a class of sixièmes (Year 7 equivalent) at the Collège Notre Dame de la Providence.
