  • Schnaps & Rösti Enamelled Glass and Swiss Pottery 17
Press Kit June 2017 Schnaps & rösti Enamelled Glass and Swiss Pottery 17th-19th Centuries Musée Ariana, 9 June 2017 - 18 February 2018 Press visit: Thursday 8 June at 11 am Exhibition preview: Thursday 8 June at 7 pm 10, Avenue de la Paix 1202 Geneva Press pack downloadable here or on our website: www.ariana-geneve.ch Un musée Ville de Genève www.ariana-geneve.ch Schnaps & rösti Enamelled Glass and Swiss Pottery 17th-19th Centuries Musée Ariana, 9 June 2017 - 18 February 2018 Press Release Geneva, June 2017. The Musée Ariana is continuing its series of exhibitions focused on its collections. After “Italian Faience” in 2006 and “Ceramics of Islam” in 2014, “The Ariana Selects from its Storerooms III" considers the Swiss identity through a rich display of pottery and glass from Eastern Switzerland. On the one hand, there are the dishes for the rösti potato cake, as well as other earthenware terrines with underglaze slip decoration, and on the other, schnapps flasks and tumblers in clear or coloured glass, enhanced with polychrome enamelling. Although the techniques and forms differ, the iconographic motifs overlap and echo each other. Wild flowers, the bears of Bern, men and women dressed in their best finery, and heraldic coats of arms adorn this ware as elaborate as it is fresh. The designs are often complemented by religious, patriotic or gallant sayings that give us fascinating insights into people’s everyday lives. To accompany this exhibition, two major French/German bilingual publications written by recognized experts are being published by 5 Continents and will be on sale in the museum.

  • Bernese Anabaptist History: a Short Chronological Outline (Jura Infos in Blue!)
Bernese Anabaptist History: a short chronological outline (Jura infos in blue!) 1525ff Throughout Europe: Emergence of various Anabaptist groups from a radical reformation context. Gradual diversification and development in different directions: Swiss Brethren (Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria), Hutterites (Moravia), Mennonites [Doopsgezinde] (Netherlands, Northern Germany), etc. First appearance of Anabaptists in Bern soon after 1525. Anabaptists emphasized increasingly: Freedom of choice concerning beliefs and church membership: Rejection of infant baptism, and practice of “believers baptism” (baptism upon confession of faith) Founding of congregations independent of civil authority Refusal to swear oaths and to do military service “Fruits of repentance”—visible evidence of beliefs 1528 Coinciding with the establishment of the Reformation in Bern, a systematic persecution of Anabaptists begins, which leads to their flight and migration into rural areas. Immediate execution ordered for re-baptized Anabaptists who will not recant (Jan. 1528). 1529 First executions in Bern (Hans Seckler and Hans Treyer from Lausen [Basel] and Heini Seiler from Aarau) 1530 First execution of a native Bernese Anabaptist: Konrad Eichacher of Steffisburg. 1531 After a first official 3-day Disputation in Bern with reformed theologians, well-known and successful Anabaptist minister Hans Pfistermeyer recants. New mandate moderates punishment to banishment rather than immediate execution. An expelled person who returns faces first dunking, and if returning a second time, death by drowning . 1532 Anabaptist and Reformed theologians meet for several days in Zofingen: Second Disputation. Both sides declare a victory. 1533 Further temporary moderation of anti-Anabaptist measures: Anabaptists who keep quiet are tolerated, and even if they do not, they no longer face banishment, dunking or execution, but are imprisoned for life at their own expense.

By: Stéphane Rosière Stéphane Rosière, 2015, « Switzerland – Jura / Berne Cantons border dispute », in Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly (Ed.), Encyclopedia of Border Conflicts, Santa Barbara (CA), ABC-Clio publisher, vol. 2, Positionnal disputes, pp.428-434. Summary: The Swiss Jura / Berne border dispute is linked to the discordance between the political border of the Swiss Bern and Jura Cantons, and the linguistic border between French and German speaking populations. From 1815, Bern Canton has had a large French speaking population. The French speakers gained the right to create their own new Canton called ‘Canton of Jura’ following a 1974 referendum. But the border between Bern and Jura Cantons is still contested. On November 24th, 2013, a second referendum over self- determination has occurred making is clear that 71.8% of Berne Canton residents do not want to join in but for a primarily francophone city, Moutier, where 55.4% want to move over to the Canton of Jura.
