JOHN THUNE, U.S. SENATOR FROM SOUTH DAKOTA The CHAIRMAN. Good afternoon. This hearing will come to order. I want to thank everyone for coming today to discuss the exciting potential of augmented reality technology. This past Fourth of July weekend, many Americans began to no- tice an unusual phenomenon: more and more people—far more than usual—were going outside. Suddenly, sidewalks, parks, and local landmarks were packed with people wandering the great out- doors while burying their heads in their smartphones. These people, of course, were playing the smash hit mobile game, Poke´mon GO. But by going out into the real world to find and cap- ture digital creatures, they weren’t just playing a game. They were getting their first exposure to the possibilities of augmented reality. Many of us have heard of, or experienced, virtual reality, which usually involves putting on a headset that covers users’ eyes, sur- rounding them in an artificial world. However, augmented reality, or AR, is different. AR takes digital information and superimposes it onto the real, physical environment. Rather than closing the user off from the real world, AR adds virtual content on top of the real world. Poke´mon GO accomplishes this by using a smartphone’s camera to record the real world while the game displays digital characters over the image on the phone’s screen. More advanced AR headsets, currently in development and in use by industry, have mixed re- ality capabilities that can map the user’s surroundings in real time and allow virtual content to convincingly interact with the physical world. These more advanced AR devices and techniques show that the potential of this technology goes far beyond smartphone games and could one day have a major impact on manufacturing, transpor- tation, medicine, and eventually the daily lives of average Ameri- (1) VerDate Nov 24 2008 12:19 May 16, 2017 Jkt 075679 PO 00000 Frm 00005 Fmt 6633 Sfmt 6633 S:\GPO\DOCS\25407.TXT JACKIE 2 cans. For example, imagine a worker in a factory whose job is to assemble an advanced jet engine for a new airliner. With an AR headset, that worker could see step-by-step instructions floating above his work station, with the exact spot he is supposed to weld being digitally highlighted. Or imagine a medical student who can train on a virtual 3D model created from scans of a real patient. Or an EMT in a rural area who can receive real-time instructions from a specialist in a hospital hundreds of miles away on how best to stabilize a patient while help is on the way. AR technology promises to take all of the information that has been confined to the Internet over the past few decades and integrate it into the physical world, where such content can be most useful and do the most good. Advanced manufacturing and other industries have already begun using AR for training new workers and have seen great im- provements in safety and efficiency. We often hear about tech- nology replacing workers, but AR provides an opportunity for tech- nology to enhance workers instead, by helping them with their training and making them more productive. Studies have explored LBG from various perspectives. However, a comprehensive study of who these players are, their traits, their gratifications, and the links between them is conspicuously absent from the literature. In this paper, weaim to address this lacuna through a series of surveys with 2390 active LBG players utilizing Tondello’s Player Traits Model and Scale of Game playing Preferences, and Hamari’s scale of LBG gratifications. Our findings (1) illustrate an association between player satisfaction and social aspects of the studied games, (2) explicate how the core-loops of the studied games impact the expressed gratifications and the affine traits of players, and (3) indicate a strong distinction between hardcore and casual players based on both traits and gratifications. Overall our findings shed light into the players of LBG, their traits, and gratifications they derive fromplaying LBGs. CCS Concepts: • Human-centered computing !     ABSTRACT HUNZAKER, MICHELLE ASHLEY. Intent or Misinterpretation? Disruptive Behaviors within Ingress. (Under the direction of Dr. Nick Taylor). Disruptive behaviors, such as trolling, have eluded definition across multiple platforms. Adding another case study and new platform to the list of past scholar definitions, this study does not define what disruptive behavior looks like in location-based mobile games (LBMG), but looks at how a community within the LBMG, Ingress, views and manages disruptive behaviors. Through the combined use of multi-cited ethnography and connective ethnography, three themes came from 11 participant interviews (8 male and 3 female) with examples from interviews and observations of public, in-game communications panes and private community messaging channels and forums and suggestions of how to manage these behaviors are noted. This panel was actually inspired by recent events – that Silvia (Ruzanka) mentioned in her talk earlier – the new devices coming out, how inexpensive they are, and how much better they are than what we had 20-25 years ago. So many of us who have worked in VR are looking at this and wondering: What is this? Is this the Second Coming, or is this the Second Coming of more hype? We have to figure this out. Despite year-long efforts in education, studying and under- standing physical phenomena still proves to be a challenge to both learn- ers and educators. However, with the current rise of Virtual Reality expe- riences, interactive immersive simulations in 3D are becoming a promis- ing tool with great potential to enhance and support traditional class- room setups and experiences in an engaging and immersive way. The paper describes the evaluation of the physics laboratory Maroon pre- sented on two distinct VR setups: first, a mobile and cost-efficient but simpler VR experience with the Samsung GEAR and second, a more interactive room scale experience with the HTC VIVE. First results of both preliminary empirical studies indicate that the VIVE environment increases user interactivity and engagement whereas the GEAR setup benefits from portability and better flexibility. In this paper we discuss device-specific design aspects and provide a comparison focusing on as- pects such as immersion, engagement, presence and motivation. The design of social virtual experiences presents a challenge for remotely located users with room-scale setups like those af- forded by recent commodity virtual reality devices. Since users inhabit different physical spaces that may not be the same size, a mapping to a shared virtual space is needed for creating experiences that allow everyone to use real walking for locomotion. We designed three mapping techniques that enable users from diverse room-scale setups to interact to- gether in virtual reality.
