DRUMDERG WIND FARM COMMUNITY BENEFIT FUND OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS THE Scottish Community Foundation is now accepting applications for grants from the Drumderg Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund. Groups and organisations working to benefit people in Alyth, Strathardle and Glenshee in Eastern are encouraged to apply. The fund is provided by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), which is building the Drumderg Wind Farm. SSE will contribute £64,000 annually to local initiatives through the fund for 25 years. A further amount linked to the output of the wind farm once it starts generating electricity could take the future total annual contribution up to £100,000. “SSE has a tradition of supporting communities in which we operate. The fund is designed to support initiatives which will strengthen the community and make a genuine difference to the lives of local people,” explained Alan Young, SSE’s Director of Corporate Affairs. “We have appointed grantmaking charity the Scottish Community Foundation to hold and administer the fund. They have a strong track record in this area of work and have awarded over £14 million in grants since 1996.” Constituted community groups, not-for-profit organisations and charities will be able to apply to the Foundation for grants to support a wide range of projects providing public benefit to people living within the areas served by the two Negotiating Bamff Road at Kirk corner - by M. Kay Community Councils of Mount Blair (which covers most of the glens of Strathardle and Glenshee) and Alyth – the two areas bordering the Drumderg site. Applications for grants between £250 and £10,000 can be submitted in advance of four deadlines during 2008: 11th February, 6th May, 28th July and 27th October. Groups wishing to apply for more than £10,000 should contact the Scottish Community Foundation to discuss their project first. Although the Foundation will receive and process applications for grants, it will work closely with an Advisory Panel made up of community councillors and other local representatives from both the Mount Blair and Alyth areas which will make recommendations about the grants to be awarded, based on the applications received. The two Community Councils have agreed to work together jointly with the Foundation to ensure the Fund achieves the maximum possible benefit for both areas. The Chairman of Alyth Community Council, Jim Adam said: “I’m pleased that the Scottish Community Foundation is now in the position to receive applications to the fund, and we look forward to seeing this money being used to support local groups and projects that will enhance our communities.” Further information and application forms are available from the Scottish Community Foundation’s website www.scottishcf.org, or by contacting the Foundation on tel. 0141 225 6670, or email [email protected]. The Foundation held a funding surgery in Kirkmichael and Alyth on 15th Winding through the Den & the first tower built - www.drumdergwindfarm.com January for groups to discuss their projects or seek advice about applying to the Fund. Groups can contact Margaret Phelps on 0141 225 6670 for details and to book a time to speak to a Grants Officer.

IT hardly seems like a year since drumdergwindfarm.com was first published on the internet. A lot has happened in a year and as events have rolled out literally through the town, and on route to Drumderg itself, the website team have been going the extra mile to ensure that events are captured for historical reference. We have taken an unprecedented amount of photographs and video footage, which we eventually hope to put on display in the Library or some other venue for people to look at, in conjunction with rotating the photographs & video available on the website. We will gladly make available to any interested individuals, free access to the library of photographs and video footage, details of how this can be arranged are on the website. The website team are happy to receive any other video footage or photography which people have taken; we will be happy to credit these individuals accordingly and publish on the website. LET US HASTE TO KELVINGROVE by Louise Ramsay 73-75 Airlie St. EARLY in September, as you may already know, your own nature column writer and editor was nominated for Alyth the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Environment Award 2007. As he won’t be telling you about this himself I thought Alyth Voice readers might like to hear about the prizegiving in early December from the wife’s perspective. For me it was something of a long day. I had risen at five to drive to Mill of Fyal from where Charles Dobb LICENSED GROCER drove me and Alison Bowman to Dundee to catch a train to Newcastle. We were going to a conference on carbon reduction communities so that we could pick up some new ideas to bring back to Alyth. It was an interesting day. • DVD Hire • Lotto Outlet • Shoe Repair • Mark Lynas, the climate change writer addressed us in the morning with an overview of the current state of cli- • Irvine’s Butcher Meat • Photocopier • mate change science, which was predictably alarming. We heard about Ashton Hayes, in England, a village in • Mobile Top-up • Laundry • which people have become so involved with carbon reduction that some of them even display their carbon foot- prints on their front windows. Another talk was about the practicalities of carbon reduction: new kinds of insula- FREE HOME DELIVERY! tion and various approaches to space heating and examples of where they have been installed in village halls OPEN: 8am - 10pm Mon - Sat and such. 8am - 8pm Sunday I attended a couple of workshops – one on motivating communities and one on liaising with the Local Council. Then, stuffing pamphlets into my bag I rushed off early to the station and jumped on a train back to Edinburgh. Tel No: 01828 632306 My plan was to go through to Glasgow on the train, changing on the way into my evening clothes for the glamor- ous dinner we had been promised at the Kelvingrove Museum. It seemed a little daunting – trying to do some- thing about my hair, makeup and jewellery in the train lavatory and then traipse down the platform in my evening shoes. I spoke to Paul on his mobile phone just after I had got on the train in Newcastle and realised that I was PEEL FARM going to pass through Edinburgh not long after he had arrived there by car. He agreed to pick me up at Waverley LINTRATHEN and drive me through. Pushing my luck I asked if there would be time for me to just nip into our children’s flat and wash my hair very quickly and change. He agreed. He subsequently regretted this. When we finally got into the Tel: 01575 560718 car to leave Edinburgh the rush hour was at its peak (6pm) and we were stationary for ages, first on George Street and later on Lothian Road. It was one of those situations when you know that the only thing to say is noth- ******** ing. Anything I might have said would have made matters worse. We were going to be late, and it was all my Courtyard and Coffee Shop fault. Open Weekends Only from 2nd Feb. We did finally get out of Edinburgh and sped along the motorway. Paul’s much despised Sat Nav (which I have 10.00am - 4.30pm now almost given up insulting, it has saved the day so often) got us to Kelvingrove only 20 minutes late. We were directed up to the gallery where unusual whisky cocktails were thrust into our hands. I walked up to ********** the first person I saw and introduced myself. She turned out to be the mother of Andy and Jamie Murray. That was quite exciting. Things were looking up, and Paul was beginning to thaw. I thought perhaps the divorce was Will re-open 7 days from off. 21st March The dinner itself was held in the main en- trance hall of the gallery, a vast, and magnifi- Blairgowrie Mobile Foot Clinic cently Victorian space with the added interest Working towards a healthier community of glass cases of stuffed animals on the way to the loo. The tables had been dressed up in Do you Suffer Discomfort from: Glenfiddich colours (black and gold). We were • Callus or Corns seated at the front and things looked promising. There was wine on the table and cutlery, so it • Fungal Infections or Athletes Foot seemed likely that dinner was on its way. But • Verrucas or In-growing Toenails that was where I was wrong. The next bit of the Treatment in the comfort of your evening was the award ceremony itself. As it was being televised they had rightly decided own home not to confront us with food during the filming. On another we Scotsman’ 01250 872005 discovered the family of Ewan MacGregor. Just 01/12/07 Mobile 07904 382840 in front of us was the stage with shiny silver steps. Kirsty Wark, in the highest heels I had ever seen, presided and a different person presented the award to each winner – someone from the relevant ]AVAgt|ÄÉÜ|Çz field. There were some amusing moments. One of the best bits was the man with a mop who came out between MENSWEAR & WOMENSWEAR presentations and polished up the shiny steps again to make them immaculate for the next shoot. He was given a GARMENT ALTERATION SERVICE cheer and a bottle of wine, or possibly whisky at the end. We had been warmed up a bit at the beginning and also clapped too enthusiastically at some point so one of the awards had to be re-shot because they were short on CURTAIN MAKING / SHORTENING time. (It wasn’t a live recording – the programme went out the following evening). The award presenters read out (Customer to provide own Fabric & Trim) the names of the four nominees for each category, short films were shown describing their achievements and then the presenter opened an envelope and revealed the winner. The other categories were literature, art, music, ~ Collection & Delivery Service ~ entrepreneurship, sport and food. The environment was quite far down the list and Paul and I were getting more Contact: Mr Joe Chalmers and more nervous. The other environmentalists seemed so deserving of the award. The chances of Paul winning ~ ALYTH ~ did not seem very great. The winners of the other awards were mostly very well known. We both decided it was a Tel: 01828 634241 most amusing experience to be there and that was quite enough. Finally the environment’s turn came. Vanessa Collingridge, a very attractive, heavily pregnant, youngish woman, whom I subsequently discovered is a rather well known journalist and broadcaster, got up to present the dâtÄ|àç Y|Ç|á{BXyy|v|xÇà fxÜä|vx BVÉÅÑxà|à|äx cÜ|vxá award. The usual routine, the names, the films and the envelope. “And the winner is Paul Ramsay!” Paul leapt to his feet in delight and on to the stage and embraced both Vanessa and Kirsty warmly and made a very elegant GRANGEMOUNT little speech in praise of Glenfiddich whisky (with a bit in Gaelic) – they cut that bit later - and then (quite rightly) in praise of me and our children for our support. He should really have thanked his beavers – but you can’t say CATTERY Aberbothrie, Alyth everything. It was really a complete surprise and a wonderful moment. Paul went off to get photographed and SPECIAL DIETS CATERED FOR interviewed and then we rang up our children. INDIVIDUAL HEATED CHALETS They did finally feed us. Paul missed his starter while he was away being a media darling. Later Alex Salmond Set in the quiet rural setting of beautiful Strathmore put his arm round him and a group of young people congratulated him on his stage presence. They reckoned he PERSONAL ATTENTION had been the best. I had to agree of course. FROM THE OWNERS One thing I did find out, and this came from his mother, was that Ewan MacGregor was conceived in Alyth. There DENNIS & LIBBY MELLOY must be genius in the water. Tel: 01828 632284
