Biological studies on endemic 5 fauna give hints on a Pliocene age (Stankovic, 1960). Methods: Total of 630 subjects aged over 18 years were selected at random, from the primary healthcare register, to constitute a representative sample of a population in the district of Tetovo, adjusted for age and sex. MetS is defined according to the definition of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII). Results: The prevalence of MetS in the district of Tetovo was 28.25%. It was significantly higher in women than in men (34.06% versus 22.26%, p=0.004). The largest number of people with MetS living in rural areas (31.32% versus 23.60%, p=0.002). Of the particular components of MetS, 52.06% of the population had increased arterial blood pressure, 46.35% reduced values of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 43.17% abdominal adiposity (AA).

    PORTALS AND DOORS IN TRADITIONAL OHRID ARCHITECTURE Elena Nikoljski Panevski, Vladimir Karanakov ABSTRACT The basis for this scientific work is traditional Macedonian architecture, with emphasis on old doorway of family houses and religious objects (sacral and profane architecture). Ohrid has always been interesting for examination from these aspects, because of the fact that it has lots of historical monuments. The old part of the city contains houses, museums and churches which are one of the quality examples for traditional Macedonian architecture. The main purpose of this paper is to learn more about details in architecture, and of course, the value of details, especially old doors, portals, their dimensions, characteristics, art style, their constructors etc. This is because there is a lot of information originating from literature, books, study works and other written sources about Macedonian traditional architecture, but there is not much information about their details such as doors, windows, portals, etc. These beautiful, genius objects were built in the 19 th century. Today, they attract people who love art with its special charm and beauty, and inspire specialists - architects - for its contemporary application and creation, releasing it from fake values. There are many towns in Macedonia with well-preserved architecture dating from the 19 th century: Krushevo, Kratovo, Novo Selo, Tetovo, Debar, Struga, Prilep, Kriva Palanka, Strumica. Introduction The referendum of November 7th, 2004 in Macedonia — that wanted to reject the law on new municipal boundaries — failed completely. The turn out was only 26%. Since the end of the war of 2001 this referendum was the most serious test for the stability of the country so far. For the moment, Macedonia has left the past behind and has its eyes back on the future. To understand the current political situation in Macedonia this article describes the ups and downs which Macedonia has experienced in its struggle for stability in recent history and especially since the war of 2001. I will give special attention to the topic of decentralisation: the proposed changes to municipal borders, the role of the different political parties in this process, the popular response to it and the outcome of the referendum. Also the international position of Macedonia and the role the EU, the USA and Iraq played during this ‘crisis’ is explained. The article ends by looking forward. 2. Ethnic composition Macedonia was part of Yugoslavia until 1991, when it became an independent republic. Macedonia is a country with just over 2 million inhabitants, representing a wide variety of different ethnic groups. There are three cities on the lake's shores: Ohrid and Struga on the Macedonian side; Pogradec in Albania. There are also several fishing villages, although tourism is now a more significant part of their income. Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake of the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288 m and a mean depth of 155 m. It covers an area of 358 km² containing an estimated 55.4 km³ of water. The water at the surface of Lake Ohrid moves predominantly in a counter-clockwise direction along the shore, as a result of wind forcing and earth rotation - phenomenon known from oceans. In terms of vertical water exchange, convective mixing during winter cooling is the dominant process. However in an average winter only the top 150-200 meters of the lake are mixed, whereas the water below is stably stratified by salinity.     Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are UNESCO natural and cultural heritage sites. Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC in Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia. Mother Theresa of Calcutta was born in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. There are four national parks in Macedonia: Galichica, Mavrovo, Pelister and Jasen, which cover an area of approximately 110,000 hectares. Approximately half the population of Macedonia is under 30 years of age. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia became an official member of the United Nations Organization on April 8th, 1993. The vote was unanimous and it became the 184th member. Macedonia is known for its vineyards that cover approximately 74,000 acres. Approximately 700,000 tourists visit Macedonian lakes and mountains every year. More than 400,000 people visit the 22 or more Macedonian museums every year. The film ‘Before the Rain’ from Milcho Manchevski , obtained the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival, and was also nominated in the 1995 Academy Awards. The first Macedonian opera took place in 1926. One of the most renowned operas is 'Goce', by Kiril Makedonski, which performed on May 24th, 1954. Gligor Smokvarski’s ballet ‘A Macedonian Story’ first performed in 1953. Macedonia is known for its cultural and artistic scene, and has over 99 cultural, artistic, and educational associations presenting performances in Albanian, Turkish and Roman. There are over 99 amateur cultural, artistic and educational associations presenting concerts, music, theatre and art exhibitions. This paper explores the direct and indirect connections among tourism impact factors in the area of sustainability. Exploratory factor analysis is conducted in order to assess the underlying dimension of residents’ satisfaction with given impacts of tourism development. The authors use the three-pillar sustainability concept (socio-cultural, environmental and economic) and suggest a model that measures residents’ attitudes on tourism impacts. The model is empirically tested by elaborating the case of Ohrid (North Macedonia). The study informs tourism policy makers how to manage tourism impacts and to improve sustainability perspective. The proposed model can be adopted and applied to any tourism destination facing unsustainable development.
