The most obvious problem is that while I do this every year, you all do it once only. The special significance of what it feels like to complete twelve years of schooling can only be imagined by those experiencing it. I have a dim memory of release and relief, knowing that I would never have to go back to school again! It shows how wrong we can be about our future directions. I hope you enjoy the feeling of transition, of leaving the old and preparing to embrace the new. I expect you may feel that you have lost something too, a sense of really belonging somewhere, of being connected to place. You may have nostalgic reminiscences about the matches or contests you were involved in, of the teachers that you had, of the social occasions you enjoyed. Dr K.A. It’s not just his shirt which is loud. Comedian Gabby Millgate is not quite sure why she was invited to tag along today for Dr Karl’s regular Thursday gig with ABC radio.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

It is very pleasing to reward so many talented science students, across all undergraduate years. The Foundation awards 20 scholarships to recognize excellence and to encourage further study in physics. For 2017 the number of female recipients were lower than we had hoped, a result that can be improved especially as the ISS continues to show leadership in the gender equity and diversity space. The Foundation has been able to support the School in several ways, with a total of $300,000 transferred in 2017. Support was provided to our Julius Sumner Miller Fellow, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM, and to Dr Chris Stewart. This is a very pleasing outcome and we gratefully acknowledge all donations to the Foundation and the Messel Endowment to enable this support to continue.
