Day 1, Saturday 1st Feb - Arrival We had an interesting start as part of the group missed their flight and arrived a few hours later. While waiting for them, we had a walk in the Old Town of Warsaw and a nice dinner at a Jewish Restaurant with those, who arrived on time.! When everyone was finally here, we set off just before 22:00 and it was nearly 2 am as we !checked in at our guesthouse in Bia#owie$a. 4 Roe Deer were seen on the way.! Day 2, Sunday 2nd Feb - Białowieża Temp. -8 C.! We started at 9 am, after a hearty breakfast and saw 1 Bison at a small glade, followed by 5 Red Deer stags, 2 Bison at the edge of the Teremiski village and 6 Red Deer hinds. ! Still before lunch, we had a nice walk through the forest which brought Wolf footprints, a White-tailed Eagle and ca. 15 Ravens. After lunch at the forest glade, we transferred! to the meadows in the N of the forest where we saw another 15 Bison in total.! Day 3, Monday 3rd Feb - Białowieża !Temp. -11 that feels like -16 C, clear sky.! This morning we had an early start before breakfast and a short walk in the forest that brought 2 Black Woodpeckers, a selection of Tits, 2 Roe Deer and 3 Red Deer.! After breakfast we have found 7 Bison bulls at the edge of the forest and they allowed us to come really close and everyone enjoyed this unique photo-session.! WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 2 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2014 Later, we went for a walk west of Budy village and found 5 Bison sleeping around a haystack, plenty of footprints (Pine Marten, Fox, Wild Boar, Bison, Red Deer, Roe Deer), Black Woodpecker, several more Bison in the distance and 7 Red Deer.! Driving through the Teremiski village, once again we saw 2 Bison and 7 Red Deer. This evening we decided to visit the edge of the National Park in Bia#owie$a and had some great views of 7 Red Deer and 1 Bison bull in one frame, in the setting sun, a good end of a gorgeous day. ! Day 4, Tuesday 4th Feb - Białowieża to Biebrza !Temp. -13 C that feels like -18 C, sunny.! Once again we decided for an early morning walk in the Wolves territory and saw a Hare, Red Deer and heard a Pygmy Owl near.! After breakfast we met Arek, our guide to the Strictly Protected Area of the National Park - the UNESCO World Heritage site and a Biosphere Reserve. Arek was very knowledgable and extremely enthusiastic (as always!) and apart from enjoying our time in the reserve, we had seen dozens of huge, centuries old trees and a number of birds. Everyone had a good view at 3 White-backed and 1 Middle Spotted Woodpeckers. Back at our guesthouse, we had a delicious traditional Polish lunch of home made pierogi (dumplings stuffed with cabbage and wild mushrooms) and we hit the road towards the Biebrza Marshes. ! On the way, we have spotted 4 Red Deer in the fields and 4 Bison at a road side with the setting sun behind - a wonderful picture. Further along the way 3 Roe Deer were spotted and 1 young Elk as we approached our guesthouse in the Biebrza - Le%niczówka Biebrza&ska.! As usual, we enjoyed a plentiful home cooked Polish dinner and drinks around the fireplace.! ! WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 3 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2014 Day 5, Wednesday 5th Feb - Biebrza Southern Basin !Temp. -11 C that feels like -16 C.! This early morning we went on a drive in the Elk/Moose winter habitat and saw the total of 6 Elks quite close. Satisfied, we came back for breakfast.! Later, we have driven south to search for Beavers and Otters. The weather was gorgeous and we saw a Beaver and an American Mink at one site, followed by an Otter, a few Foxes, 1 more Beaver and a yet another American Mink fishing.! Birds seen this day included many Swans, Mallards, Black Woodpecker, Marsh Tits, Nuthatch and a Great Grey Shrike.! Day 6, Thursday 6th Feb - Biebrza Southern Basin !Temp. -7 to -5 C.! We had another early morning drive in the Elk winter habitat and saw the total of 13 Elks, most of them a bit further than yesterday but the last one - a female was very tame and gave us some great views.! After breakfast we had a short walk at Barwik that gave us fresh Wolf tracks and pooh as well as some good views of Willow Tits.! WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 4 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2014 Later, we transferred south to try for Beavers and Otters again and see if we could get any closer views. That proved to be a good decision as we had good views of an Otter close, followed by another Otter a bit more distant and a close Beaver. Everyone enjoyed the day and an earlier come back for dinner.! ! Day 7, Friday 7th Feb - Biebrza to Warsaw through Tykocin Temp.! -4 C.! Today we started after breakfast and transferred north towards Brzeziny Kapickie, saw 1 Elk on the way. We had a short but very successful walk the birch forest with very fresh evidence of Beaver activity, followed by 2 females and 1 male of Grey-headed Woodpeckers that gave us great views as well as a Middle Spotted Woodpecker.! Having briefly stopped at Goniadz viewpoint and Czechowizna Lake, we drove around the fishponds in Knyszyn and found 2 White-tailed Eagles, including one sitting on the ice and giving good views in the scope.! The group wished to see the small, baroque town of Tykocin that once had a significant Jewish population. We visited the synagogue museum and had lunch of sandwiches and different Polish soups in a small Jewish Restaurant Tejsza.! We departed towards Warsaw as it was getting dark and after a bit of traffic we checked! in at the Gromada Hotel at 18:00 and said goodbye. ! On the next day, we have arranged for a 3 hrs walk in the old town of Warsaw in the morning with a history guide. Everyone enjoyed that a lot. The group had their flight in the afternoon of that day (Sat 8 Feb) and some continued their journey through Poland to Krakow.! Poland in particular is beautiful this time of year, especially where we visited on this tour; the extensive Biebrza Marshes, and some of the last remaining old-growth forest left in Europe, the primeval forests of Bialowieski National Park, on the border with Belarus. Our tour this year was highly successfully, recording 168 species of birds along with 11 species of mammals. This includes all 10 possible Woodpecker species, many of which we found at their nest holes, using the best local knowledge possible. Local knowledge also got us on track with a nesting Boreal (Tengmalm’s) Owl, while a bit of effort yielded the tricky Eurasian Pygmy-Owl and the trickier Hazel Grouse. We also found 11 species of raptors on this tour, and we even timed it to the day that the technicolored European Bee-eaters arrived back to their breeding grounds. A magical evening was spent watching the display of the rare Great Snipe in the setting sun, with Common Snipe “winnowing” all around and the sounds of breeding Common Redshank and Black-tailed Godwits.

After that we met at the monument of King Zigismund Wasa the Third near the Royal Castle and soon we were on our way to the Białowieża Forest. We were driving through completely flat landscape of Masovian Plain, with some Common Buzzards hovering over snowless fields, but soon we turned off the main road and entered Podlasie Region, with slightly undulating landscape of the fields around, small forests and villages with a lot of wooden houses. We found some Roe Deer in the fields and next Buzzards sitting along the road. We arrived in Białowieża just on time to have a tasty home-made dinner in our family run guesthouse. After dinner we took a short walk in the park just in front of our house to look for beavers, but they were busy elsewhere, so we came back and made our plans for the next days sitting at a fireplace. We started in the primeval forests of Białoweiza where perseverance ensured that six species of woodpecker, a Pygmy Owl and the elusive European Bison were enjoyed by all. The extensive wetlands and meadows of the Biebrza National Park were drier than usual after a protracted period with no rain. However, small flocks of trumpeting Common Cranes and over-flying raptors were conspicuous here. Greater Spotted, Lesser Spotted and White-tailed Eagles graced the skies. On the way to the third region, the sandy Baltic shores of the north coast of Poland, a lakeside stop at last yielded an Elk. Shorebirds, migrating finches, raptors and Wild Boar were the main attractions here. We visited an active bird ringing station where we watched the processing of Bearded Tit, Black Redstart and Reed Warblers. Visits to the ‘wooden’ village of Ploski and the delightful city of Gdańsk, famed for its architecture, added an element of culture to the mix and we were served prodigious feasts of typical Polish food and drink in all three hotels.

In Biebrza National Park we stayed at Dolina Biebrzy http://nowadolina.dolinabiebrzy.pl/ In Białowieża we stayed at Gawra Pensjon at www.gawra.bialowieza.com This holiday, as for every Honeyguide holiday, also puts something into conservation in our host country by way of a contribution to the wildlife that we enjoyed. The conservation contribution this year of £40 per person was supplemented by gift aid through the Honeyguide Wildlife Charitable Trust, leading to a donation of £600. The donation went to The Workshop of Living Architecture, a small NGO that runs environmental projects in and near Biebrza Marshes. This includes building new nesting platforms for white storks, often in response to storm damage or roof renovation, or simply to replace old nests. The total for all conservation contributions through Honeyguide since 1991 was £117,457 to White stork (JB). June 2017. 2 DAILY DIARY Our visit to Poland seemed like one to lowland England of long ago; of things elemental: of water and of wood. The pulse of winter-water had come into the rivers long before we arrived; it was melt-water from snow-fields and iced lakes farther to the north and west.

Throw in a decent mix of owls, some amazing raptors, plenty of shorebirds, gorgeous flycatchers, the chance of Wallcreeper, some very special warblers, as well as some excellent migrants, this destination should be very high on the list of ‘must see’ places.

WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TRIP REPORT - AUTUMN BIRDS & MAMMALS, SEP 2014 Day 1, Mon 8th Sep - Arrival After meeting at Warsaw Airport we were soon heading towards our first destination – Bialowieza Forest. After getting through an usual traffic jam in Warsaw we took the road towards Bialystok, then turned right to a local road along the Bug river. We drove through picturesque countryside with a mosaic of wet meadows, small patches of forest and strips of farm fields, passing the numerous White Stork nests along village road (a week or so too late to see the birds around). Roe Deer, Fox and Hare were seen in some places on the way, as well as Common Buzzards and Kestrels. After ca. 4 hrs we finished our drive at a family run Wejmutka guesthouse in the Bialowieza village in the centre of Bialowieza Forest.! Day 2, Tue 9th Sep - Białowieża We left the hotel at 5.00 a.m. to check some forest meadows searching for European Bison. We started with the area around the Strict Reserve out of Bialowieza village. In poor dawn light we saw some dark silhouettes, which were 6 Red Deer, single Wild Boar and two bulls of Bison. When the daylight developed, we found another 4 Bison. We arrived at a right time because after 20 minutes all the animals disappeared in the forest.

Stopped for lunch at a traditional Polish tavern about half way to the Biebrza. When we reached Biebrza Marshes and drove into the National Park, we already started to look out for Elk and within minutes Danielle and Miguel spotted an Elk on the side of the road. It was a female and soon its calf also emerged from the vegetation. Great views and it was our first minutes in the Park! A few kilometres further up north we stopped at Bagno Lawki watchtower and spotted a distant White-tailed Eagle perched up at a pole, had good views in the scope. Finally, we made it to the hotel, got checked in and after a brief introductory talk about the marshes we were on our way to Barwik trail into the marsh for an evening Elk Safari trip. Once out in the open marsh, we could hear many Cranes and also Elks rutting in the distance. Saw a Greater Spotted Eagle perched up a tree (great views in the scope) and a Common Buzzard hovering in the sky.

It was a sunny day and we saw lots of stuff on the way: A Great Crested Grebe, Mute Swan and a few Mallards in the ponds just outside Warsaw, several Cranes and 30+ White Storks, a Kestrel, Marsh and Montagu’s Harrier, a few Common Buzzards and Hawfinches. After a hearty Polish dinner at our guesthouse in Białowieża we had a short talk about the area and the plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sun 26th April - Białowieża We started off at 5 in the morning and after a sip of teas and coffees we set off to search for Bison that come out of the forest at dawn. At the first place we stopped we have found two Bison bulls grazing and a Lesser Spotted Eagle, followed by another one that gave us really long and close views. Next place we stopped at - we saw one Bison in the distance so decided to drive as close as possible.

Driving through the city we saw some typical urban birds: Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie and Black-headed Gull at the Vistula River. Out of Warsaw we noticed a few Buzzards hovering over the fields. With some stops on the way (lunch, coffee), finally we reached our hotel late afternoon. Białowieża welcomed us colder - only +3 °C. With extra energy after a big hearty dinner we discussed our plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sunday 31st Jan - Białowieża Forest Temp. +5°C, drizzle in the morning We went out early morning to look for our first Bison, but we had started the day with White-tailed Eagle flying over the Strict Reserve. After a few visits to different places, finally we found 1 Bison near the village and then 5 Bison bulls in the far end of the village clearing. Wet but happy we went back to our family-run hotel for an excellent breakfast. After breakfast we decided to explore the northern part of the Białowieża Forest.
