Winter Mammals of the Białowieża Forest and Biebrza Marshes Trip report Winter Mammals 7–13 Feb 2015 7 day mammal watching tour in the Białowieża Forest and Biebrza Marshes Text and photographs by Łukasz Mazurek Tour Leader: Łukasz (Lucas) Mazurek Participants: Marc, Kris (B), Ian (uk) Wildlife: 16 mammal and 44 bird species recorded, full checklist on page 7 WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2015 Day 1, Saturday 7th Feb - Arrival The group arrived early and by 12:30 we were already on the bus and on our way north east. 1 Roe Deer and a few Buzzards were seen on the way. After checking in, a lovely dinner of traditional Polish soup and meats was followed by a short introduction to the area and a talk over a map. Day 2, Sunday 8th Feb - Białowieża Temp. -3° C, fresh snow Snow has fallen at night and we had a perfect winter aura. Early morning we have checked out the Bialowieza glade and found 3 Bison Bulls. We took our positions, allowed the animals to accept us and two of them came really close for a great photo session in the rising sun. After a hearty Polish breakfast back at our guestouse we have visited the Budy area where we saw 2 Wild Boar and very fresh footprints of a pack of Wolves in the snow. We followed them for almost 1 km and when they crossed the road we could count a total of 6 Wolves. We had lunch of sandwiches and freshly brewed coffee (standard at Wild Poland!) at a crossing of forest tracks and headed onto Pojedynacki tryb, one of our most favourite areas. The walk through an old forest was very enjoyable and brought sightings and good photos of 1 Wild Boar and 2 Bison bulls. WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 2 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2015 In the evening we decided to check out the meadows N of the forest for Bison but it looked that they had beed bothered by weekend tourists too much and hid in the forest as we saw none. We had a nice sighting of a family of ca. 7 Boar at a road side, though. Day 3, Monday 9th Feb - Białowieża Temp. -5° C, serious snowfall We decided to hit the meadows N of the forest in the early morning once again for the gut feeling that these herds will come out to feed on hay after a busy weekend. It was a great success and just before breakfast we saw a total of 39 Bison in three different herds at different locations. Heavy snowfall provided some drama and stunning pictures. Hot, freshly brewed coffee in the field was again a warm welcome before we arrived back at the guesthouse for a solid breakfast. One Roe Deer was seen on our way back. At breakfast, a flock of Bullfinches at the bird feeder in the garden took our attention and a few more bird species like Willow Tits, Nuthatch and Great Spotted Woodpecker were also seen. These birds out the window ignited a few requests, of which Black Woodpecker and a Nutcracker sounded doable so we checked out a couple of sites for them before lunch but the luck was not at our side and apart from wonderful winter scenery and a few Ravens we saw little. Another wish for that afternoon was photographing Red Deer which we did visiting a local Deer “whisperer” named Darek. This guy living in the forest has had Red Deer visiting his back yard for about 10 years now and Deer actually react to his calling, WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 3 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2015 especially when a bucket of corn can be seen in his hands :) A total of 7 stags came out and gave us some great views and photographs. After lunch, we took another long walk in the middle of the forest which was very enjoyable because of the wonderful scenery but wasn’t so successful regarding wildlife. A hearty Polish dinner of pork neck roast and a potato cake back at our guesthouse was very tasty and we enjoyed checking out our photographs from the day at a fire place. We also had a Wolf Howling drive at night with a bit of thrill when a doggy shaped animal was seen in a torchligh,t but came out to be a Fox. Day 4, Tuesday 10th Feb - Białowieża to Biebrza Temp. -2° C After breakfast we met Ewa, our guide to the Strictly Protected Area of the National Park - the UNESCO World Heritage site and a Biosphere Reserve. Ewa was very knowledgable and extremely enthusiastic (as always!) and apart from enjoying our time in the reserve, we had seen dozens of huge, centuries old trees, a number of birds, footprints in the snow, a Red Squirrel and 3 Wild Boar that gave us some great views. We had lunch back at our guesthouse while enjoying the birds at the feeder (Lesser Spotted Woodpecker) and we hit the road towards the Biebrza Marshes. On the way, we have spotted 8 Roe Deer in the fields and 3 more Boar at a road side. One Elk in a torchlight was also a nice welcome to the Biebrza Marshes as we approached our guesthouse - Leśniczówka Biebrzańska. As usual, we enjoyed a plentiful home cooked Polish dinner and drinks around the fireplace. WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 4 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2015 Day 5, Wednesday 11th Feb - Biebrza Southern Basin Temp. 0° C This early morning we went on an Elk Safari drive and saw a total of 9 Elks and 3 Roe Deer quite close. Satisfied with plenty of atmospheric photographs we came back for breakfast. Later, we have driven south to search for Beavers and Otters. The weather was gorgeous and we saw 2 White-taile Eagles, several Rough-legged Buzzards, 3 Great Grey Shrikes, Goosanders, Goldeneyes, Whooper Swan, 2 Foxes but water mammals were difficult to find because of high temperatures and rivers free of ice. One Otter was briefly seen by Marc. After lunch of traditional Polish pierogi at a roadside bar we continued our search. A drumming male Black Woodpecker gave us some good views in the scope and a female Grey-headed Woodpecker was a nice find. It was already after sunset as we spotted a Beaver swimming in one of the canals and soon after a Water Vole was spotted by Ian in a ditch very close to the minibus and we had some good views. As we slowly retreated towards our guesthouse, two more Beavers gave us good views swimming by their lodge and chewing some twigs on top of it but there was already little light for photography. Last sighting on that day were two more Elks in the torchlight near our guesthouse. WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 5 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, FEB 2015 Day 6, Thursday 12th Feb - Biebrza Southern Basin Temp. -1° C Early morning, we had another Elk Safari drive and saw 5 Elks. After the usual plentiful breakfast we drove around the southern basin of the Biebrza Marshes and transferred south to focus on finding more Beavers and Otters. We had some great views of an adult White-tailed Eagle, several more Rough-legged Buzzards, more Waterfowl, small and tame birds like Yellowhammers and Bullfinches and found two Otters that gave us long and good views coming on top of the ice to feed. At the end of the day we positioned ourselves near one of the Beaver lodges and waited for them to come out at dusk. Two American Mink were firstly seen fooling around. They obviously occupied the same lodge! Finally one Beaver came our and swam around for a while and we watched and photographed it as long as the dimming light allowed. On our way back for dinner, we drove slowly and found one Beaver chewing the twigs just at the side of the road. It gave us stunning views in a torchlight and was a great end of the day. Day 7, Friday 13th Feb - Biebrza to Warsaw Temp. -1° C in the Biebrza to +8° in Warsaw Once again we started early to try our chances with Elks and it has been a great morning with 6 Elks seen and photographed well plus a nice Red Squirrel as a bonus. After a hearty breakfast we headed south for Warsaw and stopped at a few sites for Otters briefly. Two Otters were seen there. Happy, we arrived at the Warsaw airport by 13:00 on time for everyone to catch their flights. Poland in particular is beautiful this time of year, especially where we visited on this tour; the extensive Biebrza Marshes, and some of the last remaining old-growth forest left in Europe, the primeval forests of Bialowieski National Park, on the border with Belarus. Our tour this year was highly successfully, recording 168 species of birds along with 11 species of mammals. This includes all 10 possible Woodpecker species, many of which we found at their nest holes, using the best local knowledge possible. Local knowledge also got us on track with a nesting Boreal (Tengmalm’s) Owl, while a bit of effort yielded the tricky Eurasian Pygmy-Owl and the trickier Hazel Grouse. We also found 11 species of raptors on this tour, and we even timed it to the day that the technicolored European Bee-eaters arrived back to their breeding grounds. A magical evening was spent watching the display of the rare Great Snipe in the setting sun, with Common Snipe “winnowing” all around and the sounds of breeding Common Redshank and Black-tailed Godwits.

Day 1, Saturday 1st Feb - Arrival We had an interesting start as part of the group missed their flight and arrived a few hours later. While waiting for them, we had a walk in the Old Town of Warsaw and a nice dinner at a Jewish Restaurant with those, who arrived on time.! When everyone was finally here, we set off just before 22:00 and it was nearly 2 am as we !checked in at our guesthouse in Bia#owie$a. 4 Roe Deer were seen on the way.! Day 2, Sunday 2nd Feb - Białowieża Temp. -8 C.! We started at 9 am, after a hearty breakfast and saw 1 Bison at a small glade, followed by 5 Red Deer stags, 2 Bison at the edge of the Teremiski village and 6 Red Deer hinds. ! Still before lunch, we had a nice walk through the forest which brought Wolf footprints, a White-tailed Eagle and ca. 15 Ravens. After lunch at the forest glade, we transferred! to the meadows in the N of the forest where we saw another 15 Bison in total.! After that we met at the monument of King Zigismund Wasa the Third near the Royal Castle and soon we were on our way to the Białowieża Forest. We were driving through completely flat landscape of Masovian Plain, with some Common Buzzards hovering over snowless fields, but soon we turned off the main road and entered Podlasie Region, with slightly undulating landscape of the fields around, small forests and villages with a lot of wooden houses. We found some Roe Deer in the fields and next Buzzards sitting along the road. We arrived in Białowieża just on time to have a tasty home-made dinner in our family run guesthouse. After dinner we took a short walk in the park just in front of our house to look for beavers, but they were busy elsewhere, so we came back and made our plans for the next days sitting at a fireplace. We started in the primeval forests of Białoweiza where perseverance ensured that six species of woodpecker, a Pygmy Owl and the elusive European Bison were enjoyed by all. The extensive wetlands and meadows of the Biebrza National Park were drier than usual after a protracted period with no rain. However, small flocks of trumpeting Common Cranes and over-flying raptors were conspicuous here. Greater Spotted, Lesser Spotted and White-tailed Eagles graced the skies. On the way to the third region, the sandy Baltic shores of the north coast of Poland, a lakeside stop at last yielded an Elk. Shorebirds, migrating finches, raptors and Wild Boar were the main attractions here. We visited an active bird ringing station where we watched the processing of Bearded Tit, Black Redstart and Reed Warblers. Visits to the ‘wooden’ village of Ploski and the delightful city of Gdańsk, famed for its architecture, added an element of culture to the mix and we were served prodigious feasts of typical Polish food and drink in all three hotels.

In Biebrza National Park we stayed at Dolina Biebrzy http://nowadolina.dolinabiebrzy.pl/ In Białowieża we stayed at Gawra Pensjon at www.gawra.bialowieza.com This holiday, as for every Honeyguide holiday, also puts something into conservation in our host country by way of a contribution to the wildlife that we enjoyed. The conservation contribution this year of £40 per person was supplemented by gift aid through the Honeyguide Wildlife Charitable Trust, leading to a donation of £600. The donation went to The Workshop of Living Architecture, a small NGO that runs environmental projects in and near Biebrza Marshes. This includes building new nesting platforms for white storks, often in response to storm damage or roof renovation, or simply to replace old nests. The total for all conservation contributions through Honeyguide since 1991 was £117,457 to White stork (JB). June 2017. 2 DAILY DIARY Our visit to Poland seemed like one to lowland England of long ago; of things elemental: of water and of wood. The pulse of winter-water had come into the rivers long before we arrived; it was melt-water from snow-fields and iced lakes farther to the north and west.

Throw in a decent mix of owls, some amazing raptors, plenty of shorebirds, gorgeous flycatchers, the chance of Wallcreeper, some very special warblers, as well as some excellent migrants, this destination should be very high on the list of ‘must see’ places.

WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TRIP REPORT - AUTUMN BIRDS & MAMMALS, SEP 2014 Day 1, Mon 8th Sep - Arrival After meeting at Warsaw Airport we were soon heading towards our first destination – Bialowieza Forest. After getting through an usual traffic jam in Warsaw we took the road towards Bialystok, then turned right to a local road along the Bug river. We drove through picturesque countryside with a mosaic of wet meadows, small patches of forest and strips of farm fields, passing the numerous White Stork nests along village road (a week or so too late to see the birds around). Roe Deer, Fox and Hare were seen in some places on the way, as well as Common Buzzards and Kestrels. After ca. 4 hrs we finished our drive at a family run Wejmutka guesthouse in the Bialowieza village in the centre of Bialowieza Forest.! Day 2, Tue 9th Sep - Białowieża We left the hotel at 5.00 a.m. to check some forest meadows searching for European Bison. We started with the area around the Strict Reserve out of Bialowieza village. In poor dawn light we saw some dark silhouettes, which were 6 Red Deer, single Wild Boar and two bulls of Bison. When the daylight developed, we found another 4 Bison. We arrived at a right time because after 20 minutes all the animals disappeared in the forest.

Stopped for lunch at a traditional Polish tavern about half way to the Biebrza. When we reached Biebrza Marshes and drove into the National Park, we already started to look out for Elk and within minutes Danielle and Miguel spotted an Elk on the side of the road. It was a female and soon its calf also emerged from the vegetation. Great views and it was our first minutes in the Park! A few kilometres further up north we stopped at Bagno Lawki watchtower and spotted a distant White-tailed Eagle perched up at a pole, had good views in the scope. Finally, we made it to the hotel, got checked in and after a brief introductory talk about the marshes we were on our way to Barwik trail into the marsh for an evening Elk Safari trip. Once out in the open marsh, we could hear many Cranes and also Elks rutting in the distance. Saw a Greater Spotted Eagle perched up a tree (great views in the scope) and a Common Buzzard hovering in the sky.

It was a sunny day and we saw lots of stuff on the way: A Great Crested Grebe, Mute Swan and a few Mallards in the ponds just outside Warsaw, several Cranes and 30+ White Storks, a Kestrel, Marsh and Montagu’s Harrier, a few Common Buzzards and Hawfinches. After a hearty Polish dinner at our guesthouse in Białowieża we had a short talk about the area and the plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sun 26th April - Białowieża We started off at 5 in the morning and after a sip of teas and coffees we set off to search for Bison that come out of the forest at dawn. At the first place we stopped we have found two Bison bulls grazing and a Lesser Spotted Eagle, followed by another one that gave us really long and close views. Next place we stopped at - we saw one Bison in the distance so decided to drive as close as possible.

Driving through the city we saw some typical urban birds: Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie and Black-headed Gull at the Vistula River. Out of Warsaw we noticed a few Buzzards hovering over the fields. With some stops on the way (lunch, coffee), finally we reached our hotel late afternoon. Białowieża welcomed us colder - only +3 °C. With extra energy after a big hearty dinner we discussed our plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sunday 31st Jan - Białowieża Forest Temp. +5°C, drizzle in the morning We went out early morning to look for our first Bison, but we had started the day with White-tailed Eagle flying over the Strict Reserve. After a few visits to different places, finally we found 1 Bison near the village and then 5 Bison bulls in the far end of the village clearing. Wet but happy we went back to our family-run hotel for an excellent breakfast. After breakfast we decided to explore the northern part of the Białowieża Forest.
