Els Safari & Beaver Watching in the Biebrza Marshes Trip report ELK SAFARI & Beaver watching 25–28 SEP 2015 4 day Bird & mammal watching tour in the Biebrza Marshes Text by Łukasz Mazurek, photographs by Danielle Lepetit & Łukasz Mazurek Tour Leader: Łukasz (Lucas) Mazurek Participants: Danielle, Miguel (ES) Wildlife: 7 mammal and 49 bird species recorded, full checklist on page 6 WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - ELK SAFARI & BEAVER WATCHING, SEP 2015 Day 1, Friday 25th Sep - Warsaw to Biebrza We met at the first communist Hotel MDM downtown Warsaw and were soon on our way out of the city. Stopped for lunch at a traditional Polish tavern about half way to the Biebrza. When we reached Biebrza Marshes and drove into the National Park, we already started to look out for Elk and within minutes Danielle and Miguel spotted an Elk on the side of the road. It was a female and soon its calf also emerged from the vegetation. Great views and it was our first minutes in the Park! A few kilometres further up north we stopped at Bagno Lawki watchtower and spotted a distant White-tailed Eagle perched up at a pole, had good views in the scope. Finally, we made it to the hotel, got checked in and after a brief introductory talk about the marshes we were on our way to Barwik trail into the marsh for an evening Elk Safari trip. Once out in the open marsh, we could hear many Cranes and also Elks rutting in the distance. Saw a Greater Spotted Eagle perched up a tree (great views in the scope) and a Common Buzzard hovering in the sky. At sunset hundreds of Cranes showed up in the sky, flying from all around into the marsh to roost. After sunset, we turned back and behind the corner of the forest saw a huge bull of Elk that slowly walked across the mowed fen. We watched it disappear into the reeds. Just before reaching our car we have heard a pair of Tawny Owls - a male and a female very close. A very nice start of the holiday. Gorgeous dinner back at our hotel. Day 2, Saturday 26th Sep - BIEBRZA MARSHES After a hearty Polish breakfast we went on a drive around the best sites Biebrza Marshes have to offer at this time of the year, our Wild Marshes trip. Firstly, we visited a Raised Bog, ate some northern bilberries still in fruit and saw common sundews. Later, we had a walk in the birch forest of Wolka - Kapice. Saw a Greater Spotted Woodpecker and a Grey Headed Woodpecker plus some fantastic evidence of Beaver activity. After a short visit at the Russian WWI military forts in Osowiec (Mute Swan, Common Buzzard) we had a walk at Mścichy. Everyone enjoyed the fantastic, vast open pristine landscape but it became quite windy and rainy in the meantime and we only saw a Grey Heron there. WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 2 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - ELK SAFARI & BEAVER WATCHING, SEP 2015 Later we stopped at Brzostowo for lunch of home made stuff served by the farmers. On the way, we have scored some Mallards and Buzzards as well as 200+ Cranes in the fields quite near that gave some great views. At one of the later stops at Góra Strękowa we have spotted a male Hen Harrier. Back on the Tzar’s road we have seen a young Elk bull very near and had great views. Our last trip this day was a long walk along the Honczarowska dike. We saw a Nutcracker and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, many Cranes, 2 Elks near on our way there and heard one more female moaning. Plenty of footprints: Boar, Roe and Red Deer, Elk, Racoon Dog. At a viewing tower at the far end of the dike we saw a yet another Nutcracker and 3 distant Elks, had a cup of hot tea (freshly brewed) and headed back. The walk back produced yet more Cranes in the sky, at least 2 Red Deer rutting very near and 2 more Elks, a huge bull and a cow very near that were a stunning view in the scope. Traditional substantial dinner back at the hotel. WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 3 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - ELK SAFARI & BEAVER WATCHING, SEP 2015 Day 3, SUNDAY 27th Sep - BIEBRZA MARSHES After the usual plentiful breakfast we went on a birding trip visiting a set of ponds near Knyszyn. Lots of nice birds there, White-tailed Eagles, Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk,Great White Egrets, Whooper Swans, some Ducks, Grebes and plenty of Lapwings (see the checklist). Afterwards we decided to chill out a bit visiting the baroque WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 4 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - ELK SAFARI & BEAVER WATCHING, SEP 2015 town of Tykocin with an old castle and a 17th century synagogue. We had a wonderful lunch at a traditional Polish tavern in Kiermusy and headed back to the hotel for a short break before our evening departure for Beavers. When the time was right, we boarded our car and drove down to meet the Beaver boat at sunset. Two boatmen carried us down-and up stream while we watched and photographed Beavers swimming and coming out ashore to groom their fur, mark the territory and chew some twigs. We have had some gorgeous views of at least 8 different Beavers and 1 brief sighting of an American Mink. Very happy, we stopped for dinner at a roadside bar U Dany and enjoyed some of the traditional Polish dishes. On our way back to the hotel we have seen some Fox, Elk and a Badger in car lights. Day 4, Monday 28th Sep - Biebrza to Warsaw The group decided to stay in bed until breakfast, all in all, we have been quite successful with wildlife sightings and we finished late last night. There was a full moon and an eclipse this night so I decided to wake up early and give it a try on my own and maybe also try to photograph some Elks. I woke up to the dense mist but the last stage of the eclipse and the Red Moon were still visible. Later, I moved on to check the nearby meadows for Elks and found one young bull that gave some fantastic views and photographs in the fog and the rising sun. A nice finish of a tour! Arrived on time, had a short walk in the Old Town and sat down at a small restaurant for lunch. Poland in particular is beautiful this time of year, especially where we visited on this tour; the extensive Biebrza Marshes, and some of the last remaining old-growth forest left in Europe, the primeval forests of Bialowieski National Park, on the border with Belarus. Our tour this year was highly successfully, recording 168 species of birds along with 11 species of mammals. This includes all 10 possible Woodpecker species, many of which we found at their nest holes, using the best local knowledge possible. Local knowledge also got us on track with a nesting Boreal (Tengmalm’s) Owl, while a bit of effort yielded the tricky Eurasian Pygmy-Owl and the trickier Hazel Grouse. We also found 11 species of raptors on this tour, and we even timed it to the day that the technicolored European Bee-eaters arrived back to their breeding grounds. A magical evening was spent watching the display of the rare Great Snipe in the setting sun, with Common Snipe “winnowing” all around and the sounds of breeding Common Redshank and Black-tailed Godwits.

Day 1, Saturday 1st Feb - Arrival We had an interesting start as part of the group missed their flight and arrived a few hours later. While waiting for them, we had a walk in the Old Town of Warsaw and a nice dinner at a Jewish Restaurant with those, who arrived on time.! When everyone was finally here, we set off just before 22:00 and it was nearly 2 am as we !checked in at our guesthouse in Bia#owie$a. 4 Roe Deer were seen on the way.! Day 2, Sunday 2nd Feb - Białowieża Temp. -8 C.! We started at 9 am, after a hearty breakfast and saw 1 Bison at a small glade, followed by 5 Red Deer stags, 2 Bison at the edge of the Teremiski village and 6 Red Deer hinds. ! Still before lunch, we had a nice walk through the forest which brought Wolf footprints, a White-tailed Eagle and ca. 15 Ravens. After lunch at the forest glade, we transferred! to the meadows in the N of the forest where we saw another 15 Bison in total.! After that we met at the monument of King Zigismund Wasa the Third near the Royal Castle and soon we were on our way to the Białowieża Forest. We were driving through completely flat landscape of Masovian Plain, with some Common Buzzards hovering over snowless fields, but soon we turned off the main road and entered Podlasie Region, with slightly undulating landscape of the fields around, small forests and villages with a lot of wooden houses. We found some Roe Deer in the fields and next Buzzards sitting along the road. We arrived in Białowieża just on time to have a tasty home-made dinner in our family run guesthouse. After dinner we took a short walk in the park just in front of our house to look for beavers, but they were busy elsewhere, so we came back and made our plans for the next days sitting at a fireplace. We started in the primeval forests of Białoweiza where perseverance ensured that six species of woodpecker, a Pygmy Owl and the elusive European Bison were enjoyed by all. The extensive wetlands and meadows of the Biebrza National Park were drier than usual after a protracted period with no rain. However, small flocks of trumpeting Common Cranes and over-flying raptors were conspicuous here. Greater Spotted, Lesser Spotted and White-tailed Eagles graced the skies. On the way to the third region, the sandy Baltic shores of the north coast of Poland, a lakeside stop at last yielded an Elk. Shorebirds, migrating finches, raptors and Wild Boar were the main attractions here. We visited an active bird ringing station where we watched the processing of Bearded Tit, Black Redstart and Reed Warblers. Visits to the ‘wooden’ village of Ploski and the delightful city of Gdańsk, famed for its architecture, added an element of culture to the mix and we were served prodigious feasts of typical Polish food and drink in all three hotels.

In Biebrza National Park we stayed at Dolina Biebrzy http://nowadolina.dolinabiebrzy.pl/ In Białowieża we stayed at Gawra Pensjon at www.gawra.bialowieza.com This holiday, as for every Honeyguide holiday, also puts something into conservation in our host country by way of a contribution to the wildlife that we enjoyed. The conservation contribution this year of £40 per person was supplemented by gift aid through the Honeyguide Wildlife Charitable Trust, leading to a donation of £600. The donation went to The Workshop of Living Architecture, a small NGO that runs environmental projects in and near Biebrza Marshes. This includes building new nesting platforms for white storks, often in response to storm damage or roof renovation, or simply to replace old nests. The total for all conservation contributions through Honeyguide since 1991 was £117,457 to White stork (JB). June 2017. 2 DAILY DIARY Our visit to Poland seemed like one to lowland England of long ago; of things elemental: of water and of wood. The pulse of winter-water had come into the rivers long before we arrived; it was melt-water from snow-fields and iced lakes farther to the north and west.

Throw in a decent mix of owls, some amazing raptors, plenty of shorebirds, gorgeous flycatchers, the chance of Wallcreeper, some very special warblers, as well as some excellent migrants, this destination should be very high on the list of ‘must see’ places.

WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TRIP REPORT - AUTUMN BIRDS & MAMMALS, SEP 2014 Day 1, Mon 8th Sep - Arrival After meeting at Warsaw Airport we were soon heading towards our first destination – Bialowieza Forest. After getting through an usual traffic jam in Warsaw we took the road towards Bialystok, then turned right to a local road along the Bug river. We drove through picturesque countryside with a mosaic of wet meadows, small patches of forest and strips of farm fields, passing the numerous White Stork nests along village road (a week or so too late to see the birds around). Roe Deer, Fox and Hare were seen in some places on the way, as well as Common Buzzards and Kestrels. After ca. 4 hrs we finished our drive at a family run Wejmutka guesthouse in the Bialowieza village in the centre of Bialowieza Forest.! Day 2, Tue 9th Sep - Białowieża We left the hotel at 5.00 a.m. to check some forest meadows searching for European Bison. We started with the area around the Strict Reserve out of Bialowieza village. In poor dawn light we saw some dark silhouettes, which were 6 Red Deer, single Wild Boar and two bulls of Bison. When the daylight developed, we found another 4 Bison. We arrived at a right time because after 20 minutes all the animals disappeared in the forest.

It was a sunny day and we saw lots of stuff on the way: A Great Crested Grebe, Mute Swan and a few Mallards in the ponds just outside Warsaw, several Cranes and 30+ White Storks, a Kestrel, Marsh and Montagu’s Harrier, a few Common Buzzards and Hawfinches. After a hearty Polish dinner at our guesthouse in Białowieża we had a short talk about the area and the plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sun 26th April - Białowieża We started off at 5 in the morning and after a sip of teas and coffees we set off to search for Bison that come out of the forest at dawn. At the first place we stopped we have found two Bison bulls grazing and a Lesser Spotted Eagle, followed by another one that gave us really long and close views.     Trip report Winter Mammals 30 Jan - 6 Feb 2016 8 day mammal watching tour in the Białowieża Forest and Biebrza Marshes Text and photographs by Andrzej Petryna Tour Leader: Andrzej Petryna Participants: John, Lesley, Philip, Rosemary Wildlife: 16 mammal and 36 bird species recorded, full checklist on page 7 WWW.WILDPOLAND.COM 1 WILDPOLAND TOUR REPORT - WINTER MAMMALS, JAN - FEB 2016 Day 1, Saturday 30th Jan - Arrival After a few stops at Warsaw hotels all our team was gathered together in the van and left Warsaw warm (+12°C), heading towards Białowieża. Driving through the city we saw some typical urban birds: Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie and Black-headed Gull at the Vistula River. Out of Warsaw we noticed a few Buzzards hovering over the fields. With some stops on the way (lunch, coffee), finally we reached our hotel late afternoon. Białowieża welcomed us colder - only +3 °C. With extra energy after a big hearty dinner we discussed our plans for the next days over a map. Day 2, Sunday 31st Jan - Białowieża Forest Temp. +5°C, drizzle in the morning We went out early morning to look for our first Bison, but we had started the day with White-tailed Eagle flying over the Strict Reserve. After a few visits to different places, finally we found 1 Bison near the village and then 5 Bison bulls in the far end of the village clearing. Wet but happy we went back to our family-run hotel for an excellent breakfast. After breakfast we decided to explore the northern part of the Białowieża Forest.

Pristine primeval forests – some of the last in Europe – and extensive wetlands stand as a final refuge for wildlife that has been squeezed out of much of the rest of the continent. For mammals, the cold winter months are one of the best times to visit. The snow not only creates a beautiful wintery landscapes, but forces the animals of the forests and marshes to overcome their shyness and venture out of the shadows in search of food.
