BOSTON & MAINE - ITS FITCHBURG DIVISION 8 AND HOOSAC TUNNEL IN STEAM DAYS Photographed by J. W. Deely and E. R. Blanchard That portion of the Boston & Maine which stretches west from Boston to Troy and Mechanicsville, N. Y., was, until the early years of this century, the Fitchburg Railroad. It has since been operated as the Fitchburg Division of the Boston & Maine. The Hoosac Tunnel was originally thought of as a canal tunnel in 1819, but was ultimately built as a railroad tunnel be tween 1851 dnd 1876 a cost of SB-million to $20-million - no one actually knows. In all, 139 lives were lost in its con struction. Its building saw hand drills and black powder give way to pneumatic drills and nitroglycerine blasting. HUMPTY DUMPTYC (1934) Film Prints Ub lwerks' Humpty Jr. is a thrill-seeking chip off the block, despite mother's warnings, "Be careful! That's how your father got crocked!" Humpty "falls" for pretty Easter E~g, and in a production number like a Busby Berkley egg-mus1cal they court to the catchy tune of "Spoonin' In A Spoon". Yipe I Villainous Bod Egg steals Easter and a "scrambling" chase scene ensues. Easter falls into a pot of boiling water. Via spaghetti lasso Humpty rescues, but she emerges with Mae West demeanor. Humpty also gets dunked and the hard boiled pair are just tough enough to crack Bad Egg. One of the best Cami-colors. THE LITTLE RED HEN (1934) A perky, strutting barnyard hen wants to sow grain - reap it - bake it into Dread. Around the farm, she asks, "Who will help me ... ?" Pig: "Not II I'm much too fatl" ~~~k~e: 1 ~~lo~1,roie~!t;hef~~:;:, Weill She requires no help in eating it herself! Based on a simple English repetitive folk tole about Laziness_ vs Industry - THE LITTLE RED HEN is "Ub" lwerks' catchiest, purist "Fairytale". Cleorl'{ he was surer of himself in a barn yard than in the realm o magic. Also, "Ub" was happier depicting comic animals. That is why his early "Mic~eys" never drag nor disappoint. His former employer Walt's version of this story hatched four months later in a new Technicolor Silly Symp, hony, THE WISE LITTLE HEN. Mostly, Disney and Celebrity Productions were careful not to pooch on exact titles. Yet many of the "Foirytoles" years before were plotted as Lough-0-Groms. THE LITTLE RED HEN remains as delightful, as irresistible, as ageless as a Silly Symphony. It owes much of its lilting, zippy spirit to Corl Stalling who scored the first Sillies - bs to lwerKs' always funny, recycled, infectious drawings. Who con forget: "Not II My feet ore flat". ALADDIN AND THE WONDERFUL LAMP (1934) Thrills, excitement, romance! An Arabian Night's tale brought to life by Ub lwerks in a dazzling display of color and tricky animation. Held prisoner in a gloomy: basement, on evil merchant's lamp boy polishes old lamps for his master. When he catches sight of the Sultan's beautiful daughter riding by on her elephant, he reaches through his barred window for one of her flowers. Such rapture! But a new supply of old lamps tumbling down from the trapdoor above quickly brings him back to reality. Rubbing and polishing, rubbing and polishing - he seems doomed to a miserable future. But what it this? As the sheen of copP.er emerges from a dingy old lampf,o genie also emerges, offering to grant any wish the lamp oy desires. Naturally he wishes to be in the Sultan's palace - where he startles that paunchy potentate by declaring his love for hi~ daughter. The Sultan 1s unimpressed by such a rog'ged ur chin, so wish number two instantaneously clothes him like a resplendent Prince. The third wish brings a shower of gold f,~i~d. convincing the Sultan he is indeed worthy of the Princess' Ub lwerks pulls out more tricks than the Genie in this Cinecolor cartoon.
