WELCOME Welcome to the 2018 Glasgow Film Festival. Our festival is one of the biggest film events in Britain, attracting well over 40,000 admissions each year to sample the finest films available to humanity. This year, we promise you the perfect movie mix. Start the day with one of our free Rebel Heroes screenings, featuring stars ranging from Brando and Cagney to Pacino and Poitier. Stay for a matinee from an outstanding selection of world cinema titles, documentaries and homegrown hits, or try one of the fantastic titles in our focus on Irish cinema. Room for one more? Stay for a gala screening and meet the stars, or head to one of our amazing live events in Sound & Vision, including Mica Levi and Wrangler’s new project The Unfilmables. Give us a day of your time and we’ll show you a world of cinema; stay for the festival and you’ll discover a treasure trove of thrillers and scary movies, comedies and documentaries, cult fun and riveting dramas. We have movies that entertain, delight, excite, educate and illuminate but running throughout the festival are movies that inspire. Margaret Tait, Ida Lupino and Dame Muriel Spark were all born in 1918 and we celebrate those centenaries and the lives of women who broke down barriers, challenged pre- judices and defied all the odds. We salute the Scottish workers who played a part in opposing the Pinochet junta in our brilliant Closing film Nae Pasaran, we

1 remember the fight for women’s votes in 1970s Switzerland with The Divine Order, and the Deep Throat of American politics in Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down The White House. In these bewildering, chaotic times it is all too easy to surrender to apathy or wallow in despondency but we have the antidote - films to lift your spirits and show that individuals can make a difference; that small actions can have enormous consequences, and that it is possible to be the change you want to see. At Glasgow in 2018, all we are saying is give film a chance and let our festival become your festival.

13 Opening and Closing Galas Opening Gala: Isle Of Dogs GFT Wed 21 Feb (Doors: 18.00, Film: 19.00) Four years ago we proudly opened the Glasgow Film Festival by welcoming you to The Grand Budapest Hotel. This year we invite you to visit the Isle of Dogs as visionary director Wes Anderson returns with the UK Premiere of this beguiling, stunningly crafted stop- motion animated feature that is destined to win your heart. Taking a generous helping of inspiration from the great Akira Kurosawa, Anderson’s delight is set in a dystopian future Japan. An outbreak of “canine flu” has led to all dogs being quarantined on Trash Island, an exile colony. 12-year-old Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) defies the authorities to embark on a daring rescue mission to the island. All he wants is a chance to save his beloved dog Spots (Liev Schreiber). He is soon face to face with five local dogs - Chief (Bryan Cranston), Rex (Edward Norton), Boss (Bill Murray), Duke (Jeff Goldblum) and King (Bob Balaban). The canine quintet are eager for adventure and deter- mined to protect and serve Atari on his noble quest. Witty, wise and brimming with charm, Isle of Dogs is the very essence of why we all love the movies. We couldn’t have wished for a better film to begin the 2018 Glasgow Film Festival. 14 Director Wes Anderson Cast Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Scarlett Johansson, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Liev Schreiber, Bob Balaban USA 2017, 1h45m, N/C 15+ Thanks to Fox Searchlight Closing Gala: Nae Pasaran GFT Sun 4 Mar (Doors: 18.45, Film: 19.30) We are thrilled to close this year’s Glasgow Film Festival with the World Premiere of Felipe Bustos Sierra’s eagerly awaited feature-length documentary debut. One of the recurring themes of GFF18 has been the way in which individual actions have the power to change the world – a sentiment beautifully illustrated by Nae Pasaran. In 1974 a group of workers at the Rolls- Royce factory in East Kilbride showed their support for the people of Chile by refusing to carry out vital inspections of engines for Hawker Hunter planes – the fighter jets were being used by the military junta against the people. The boycott endured for four years but the Scottish workers never knew what impact they had; it was a matter of conscience and an act of solidarity against General Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship. Forty years later, Nae Pasaran reunites inspirational figures Bob Fulton, Robert Sommerville, John Keenan and Stuart Barrie to hear their story. It also ventures much further

15 to detail the horrors of the Pinochet years, meet survivors of the period and hear the Chilean side of the story. Expanded from an award-winning 2013 short, Sierra’s rousing, deeply emotional documentary reveals the real difference these men made - and celebrates the power of acting on your beliefs. We promise to bring you a big screen classic every morning for absolutely no charge, from Henry Fonda’s resolute people’s champion in The Grapes of Wrath to Paul Newman’s unbreakable egg-chomping chain gang member in Cool Hand Luke, Sidney Poitier’s shackled convict in The Defiant Ones and Steve McQueen’s ice-cool San Francisco cop in Bullitt. Japan seems to have developed a bit of a thing for clay in recent years, judging by Sôichi Umezawa’s gory Vampire Clay and Takahide Hori’s magnificent Junk Head, both premiering this year. : The Roar of Awakening based on the massive anime series, will get an extra special secret location screening, and Larry Cohen’s filming misdemeanours are documented in the hilarious King Cohen. Any self-respecting cinephile ought not to miss an exclusive screening of Anyab, a newly restored version of the Egyptian Rocky Horror Picture Show remake from 1981 – fancy dress keenly encouraged! These films are assured to grace midnight screenings, double bills and genre festivals the world over – the future of cult film is here. The -born actor was initially dubbed the ‘English Jean Harlow’, but made her mark playing bossy femme fatales, floozies and gangster’s molls in classic thrillers of the 1940s. By the following decade she was the only female director working in the Hollywood system. Fiercely independent, her tough, tightly coiled low-budget films were way ahead of their time in tackling taboos, exploring social issues and creating complex female characters. Lupino subsequently became a versatile and vastly prolific television director, working on every popular prime time show of the period, from The Twilight Zone to Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Virginian and Bewitched. Our centenary tribute to this maverick includes two of her most famous acting roles and three films that she directed. Sarah Forrest’s research for this new film began on the Isle of Lewis, where she spent time looking at the stories, landscapes and histories associated with ‘second sight’, a prophetic phenomenon that is particular to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Taking an explorative approach to this subject matter, her new film reflects on the

109 complex relationship between storytelling and vision, perception and belief. Crossing the Line. In her work, an experience of doubt (intellectual/emotional/psych- ological) is often used to destabilise the familiar. Objects misbehave. Holes appear in reality. Appear- ances deceive. Nothing can be something felt, perceived as present. In both filmmaking and writing, she uses this moment of friction to explore tensions between text/image, fact/fiction, material/immateriality, and subject/object.
