Fundraising for Pigeon Valley Fire In February, after the Wakefield Fires, Reuben Prestidge rallied the student body to organise a food collection for the Red Cross Food Collection centre. It was a great success, with two van loads of foodstuffs and supplies being delivered to the Emergency Collection Centre. Reuben also organised a student Mufti day, with $1500 going to the Mayoral Relief Fund. Nice work, and a big thanks to everyone who donated. Broods Concert We were privileged to host Broods for their concert in recognition in all the hard working people involved in the recent Pigeon Valley bush fires. Nelson College Whanau group welcomed them when they arrived at Nelson Airport. https://www.facebook.com/NelsonAirportNZ/videos/2259126920997153/ Year 13 Leadership Conference and Mosque visit In the last week of term one, some of the student leadership group travelled to Christchurch to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference. This gave the student leaders a chance to mix and mingle, share ideas and gain new insights into school leadership from a student point of view and was attended by other school leaders from the Canterbury region. While in Christchurch the group visited the El Noor Mosque on Deans Avenue to express support to the Muslim community from Nelson College. Michael Lauer, a Year 11 student, completed a painting, which students and staff signed with words of support. Michael hand delivered it to some of the Mosque leaders during this visit. The group also visited Christs College to hand over a cheque for $1000 – these funds were collected from the last school mufti day and Christs College will use the money to help in their cause of supporting directly some of the victims families as two of their staff were shot and wounded in the mosque. Debating After some highly competitive debating at the Kahurangi-Marlborough Regional Debating Championships hosted by Nelson College for Girls, Ronan Thompson was selected for the Regional Team - he'll be going to the New Zealand Schools' Debating Nationals later in the year. Congrats too, to our junior team, Sam Twamley, Ben Thomas and Jay Simpson for coming in as Runners-Up in their section. Nelson College representatives on this year's Nelson Youth Council are Ollie Ransom, Hamish Smith, Theo Wheatley, Ryan Martyn and Nico Frizzell. Nelson Youth Council The Nelson Youth Council is a group of 20 people aged 14-24 who work to make the city a better place for youth and to give young people a voice in Nelson. There are representatives from every secondary school, as well as NMIT and the community. The group meets every month in the Council Chamber to discuss youth issues, actions and projects. Young Enterprise Trust Every year Nelson College nurtures budding entrepreneurs, who are active participants in the Young Enterprise Trust. The first session of the year had Pic Picot as a guest speaker, inspiring students with his famed rise to success in the world of peanut butter! Chess Congratulations to our sterling Chess Team who beat Marlborough Boys' College, with a grand total of 51 wins and 5 draws out of 64 games. Year 11 Geography Abel Tasman National Park research field trip On Thursday 28 March the Year 11 Geography class embarked on a field trip to the Abel Tasman National Park. We spent the day in the park with the main purpose to conduct counts of native bird species on both Adele Island and Appletree Bay on the mainland coastal track. We used the services of Abel Tasman Eco Tours to provide water transfers to and from the mainland, as well as a guided interpretive tour around Adele Island and Astrolabe Roadstead and Split Apple Rock (Kaiteriteri). The class was investigating the differences in the number and range of birds between each study location. We were interested in whether there would be more birds on Adele Island, which has been recently publicised as being ‘predator free’, compared with Appletree Bay. This would help the class assess the effectiveness of the management of pests such as rats, stoats and possums in the national park. The day was a great success, with settled weather and good preparation by the students contributing to this. The students thoroughly enjoyed being out of the classroom, learning about the protection of native birds in a practical and relevant way. The primary data collected during the field trip will be used by the students to write an internal assessment in the form of a research report. My thanks to Graeme Peake for accompanying one of the two groups on the day, as well as driving one of the vans. He also deserves credit for the excellent photos enclosed with his article! Mr David Purdie Teacher in Charge of Geography NC GYMBUDDY On Sunday 24th of March a dedicated year 12 business group set up a community gym stall for Race Unity Day at Victory square. The goal was to create a fun community gym for anyone to come in and try their service and pump some iron. The stall was a success with over 100 people getting involved lifting weights with another 50 people showing membership interest for our open access Community Gym and friendly Personal Training service. The boys are trying to make a community gym and offer training for the local Victory Nelson community so if you have a free space please contact [email protected] Also, if you have any gym gear or a venue available for them to use please contact the school. Sport Daniel Rogers - 2019 Marjoribanks Shield winner Josh Sheridan - Senior Athletics Champion & TSS Triathlon Nelson College Athletic Championships There were two stand-outs in college athletics this years. Daniel Rogers won the Marjoribanks Shield - awarded to the winner of both the 80m and 100m. The Shield was first awarded in 1898 for what was then the 100 yard dash. And Josh Sheridan won the Barron Cup for 400m, Duncan Cup for 800m and Talbot Cup for 1500m, making him the 2019 Senior Champion in Athletics, as well as winning the Tasman Secondary Schools Triathlon. Volleyball It has been a hectic season for our Senior A team. They performed well in the local NVA league on Thursday nights. In the first qualifying round for Nationals they lost to Waimea College in the final. They then headed off to Christchurch for the Mainland Competition where they placed 3rd. In the final round of Tasman Secondary Schools Championships the team had a great tournament winning this one and going to Nationals as the first seed from Tasman.

    THE BulletinAPRIL 2013 The Magazine of the Nelson College Community 1 From the Acting Headmaster – Mr Tim Tucker The staff and students of the school have been busy in recent months. Even more gratifying is that the industry has been rewarded with many many fantastic results. It remains that the provision of high quality courses and the best possible education for our boys are our greatest priorities. The opening of the Gibbons Trade Education Centre is one example of the Old Boys, Community and College working together to provide the best for our boys. The Centre is a modern purpose-built facility which is providing students with the highest quality preparation for a career in their chosen trades area. I would like to acknowledge all the sponsors and supporters of this project but especially the Gibbons family. The family was personally involved in the project at all stages and willingly gave considerable time and resources to ensure the highest quality results. The Education Review Office visited the school in August 2012 to assess the quality of teaching and learning occurring at Nelson College. The ERO visit involves a great deal of investigative work from their team and extensive review of our courses and policies. Nelson College is one of only 15% of schools nationwide to receive the highest grade of review. The grade of review is measured by the length of time until the next visit – ours will be five years! Perhaps most importantly it is reassurance from the highest level that we are delivering high quality learning in a positive and motivating environment or as ERO put it, "students are highly engaged in learning" ..

    the bulletin December 2016 The Magazine of the Nelson College Community 1 Message from the Headmaster Dux 2016 Tena koutou katoa Congratulations to 2016 Dux recipient Finn Thompson The core business of the College continues to be to equip young men with the social and academic knowledge, skills and attitudes which will enable them to make considered and safe choices in their transition into adulthood. This has been endorsed in another outstanding Education Review Offi ce report from the visit in September this year. We have been accorded a second 4-5 year review cycle, placing us, as a school, at the highest level of performance recognition. Whilst the report is not a public document yet, at Senior Prizegiving I disclosed a paragraph about the quality of teaching. The ERO inspection team stated that: “Students appreciate the choices and responsive teaching methods they benefi t from at the school. The opportunity for authentic learning in many subject areas is raising student engagement and achievement. High expectations are clearly stated and evident for all and student successes are widely celebrated.” I cannot speak too highly of the quality of teaching and non-teaching staff at this school. Their commitment to the welfare and positive development of the boys is simply outstanding and they are core to the success that the boys and the College have achieved. Academic Performance The boys continue to perform well above the National average in all areas of academic attainment, including NCEA, Photo courtesy Vibeke Friis Trade Qualifi cations, Scholarship and Cambridge Examinations. In particular the broad achievement benchmark targets set by the Minister for all New Zealand schools for 2017 have already been attained, or are close to being achieved.

    THE BulletinDecember 2013 The Magazine of the Nelson College Community 1 From the Headmaster Kia ora As Headmaster it is with a great deal of pride that I can report that 2013 has been another exceptional year in almost every area of College life. Our hosting of the QUAD tournament saw a large number of Old Boys visit the College and over 120 enjoyed an excellent dinner in the College Hall, catered by our Year 12 Food & Hospitality class. It was heartening to see a 40 years on reunion group as well as three separate 1st XV groups gathered to share memories and to celebrate their time at the College. The following are extracts from my Senior Prizegiving address which elaborate on some highlights:- SENIOR PRIZEGIVING ADDRESS 2013 has seen over 40 Boys honoured with BOT medallions and will take their place on the Honours Board recognizing their achievements of being selected for a NZ representative team, event, or winning a NZ title. They have achieved this level of distinction in a diverse and varied selection of academic areas, sporting codes or co-curricula activities. The Arts have continued to flourish. In music a multitude of outstanding performances both at College events and in the Community have occurred and we are fortunate to have Ms McDowell as the driving force as music remains at the centre of College life. In Drama, the highlight of the year was a quite stunning and innovative interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet written and directed by our Head of Drama Mr Walton, outstanding results were also recorded in Theatre sports and in the Shakespeare Festival, where once again a boy was selected as a NZ Shakespeare scholar and he will travel to London next year.

    the bulletin December 2014 The Magazine of the Nelson College Community 1 Message from the Headmaster 2014 has been a busy, challenging and eventful year. The College continues to show unprecedented roll growth, strong academic and sporting success and sound financial and commercial development. Our school roll will grow again in 2015, with an anticipated 1266 boys incorporating 1100 MOE funded boys, 50 Internationals and a full Preparatory School of 116. Seismic strengthening work was completed on the Hall in mid-October in time for graduation events and prizegiving. Seismic work on the remaining two classrooms will be completed over the summer. It is pleasing to report that all of our buildings will then have seismic ratings of above 67%, a huge relief for the College. Academic highlights from 2013 include Oliver Coleman, the 2013 Dux receiving the National Subject Scholar award for Biology and our NCEA Level 2 pass rate in 2013 being at 88%, our highest in eight years. Of note is the exceptional achievement rate of our Maori boys with 75% of them leaving the College with a Level 2 qualification compared to the National statistic of 45%. One of the important components of our vision for the co- curricula life of the College has been to raise the profile and performance of Cricket and Football up to the level of Rugby, Volleyball and Basketball. I have been delighted with the quality and sportsmanship exhibited by all of our teams but in particular the 1st XI Football team who won the Nelson Men's Division 1 competition and finished a credible 7th at Nationals beating both MAGS and AGS.

Robertson has been the Head Coach of the Canterbury national provincial team since 2013, guiding the team to three Premiership titles in that role. He also assisted the team to five successive titles between 2008 and 2012, first as the Assistant Forwards Coach for four years and then as the Assistant Coach in 2012.

    the bulletinDecember 2018 The Magazine of the Nelson College Community 1 Message from the Headmaster College News Tena koutou katoa Dux 2018 It is my pleasure to provide you with a brief report on the College’s year, the 162nd in its history and my 13th year as Headmaster. I have been privileged to have led and been part of this College’s growth, and I am proud of our progress throughout this time. Academic Performance The boys continue to perform well above the National averages in all areas of academic attainment including NCEA, Trade Qualifications, Scholarship and Cambridge Examinations. The broad achievement benchmark targets set by the MOE for all NZ schools for 2018 are close to having been achieved. Co-Curricula Performance In 2017/2018 Nelson College students have continued to achieve success nationally and been selected for international honours: (a full list is included in this edition of the Bulletin) Old Boys & Community Contribution Thank you to Old Boys who have contributed in a multitude of ways in support of boy’s participation in the College, Photo courtesy Chris Phillips Thank you to the following who have made contributions or who are sole funding significant projects -these include Photo courtesy Chris Phillips • Matakitaki Lodge – upgrades and equipment (funded by the Christchurch OBA branch and Owen bequest) Thomas Peterson was announced Dux at the End of Year Senior Prizegiving Senior Prizegiving 2018 • The College’s Whare, it’s a carved façade is nearing completion and has been supported by the Trust Foundation and held on Thursday 1 November 2018.
