The West Wing Weekly 6.21: “Things Fall Apart” Guest: Jennifer Palmieri [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to the West Wing Weekly. I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: Today we’re talking about episode 21 from season 6, it’s called “Things Fall Apart.” JOSH: This episode was written by Peter Noah and directed by Nelson McCormick. It first aired on March 30th 2005. HRISHI: I don’t believe we’ve heard the name Nelson McCormick before. Is that someone whose directed The West Wing before? JOSH: No, I think not. This is his first of what will turn out to be two episodes of The West Wing. He also directed an episode called “Transition.” Which we’ll get to. Oh we’ll get to it. HRISHI: Joining us later on this episode Jennifer Palmieri, Communications Director for the Hillary Clinton campaign and formerly for the Obama White House. JOSH: What do you think of this one? HRISHI: I, I like the plot of this episode. I think it’s interesting what happens with the convention and the nomination process, but the execution of it, I have issues with here and there. Really just a few moments here and there in the writing. JOSH: I think we will find ourselves in accord as I wrote down ‘Great bones, not enough meat’ HRISHI: Hey look at that. Yeah. That’s a good way of putting it. Rempt: President’s Forum Rear Admiral Rempt is a 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Initial assignments included deploy- ments to Vietnam aboard USS Coontz (DLG 9) and USS Somers (DDG 34). He later commanded USS Antelope (PG 86), USS Callaghan (DDG 994), and USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). Among his shore assign- ments were the Naval Sea Systems Command as the ini- tial project officer for the Mark 41 Vertical Launch System; Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) staff as the Aegis Weapon System program coordinator; director of the Prospective Commanding Officer/Executive Officer Department, Surface Warfare Officers Schools Com- mand; and Director, Anti-Air Warfare Requirements Division (OP-75) on the CNO’s staff. Rear Admiral Rempt also served in the Ballistic Missile Defense Orga- nization, where he initiated development of Naval Theater Ballistic Missile Defense, continuing those ef- forts as Director, Theater Air Defense on the CNO’s staff. -

The West Wing Weekly 1:19: Let Bartlet Be Bartlet Guest: Under Secretary of the Army, Patrick Murphy [Intro Music] JOSH: Well hello. You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. Today we’re talking about season one, episode nineteen of The West Wing : “ Let Bartlet Be Bartlet ”. And coming up later, the United States Under Secretary of the Army, the honorable Patrick Murphy, is going to be joining us to talk about this episode. JOSH: It first aired on April 26th, 2000. The story is by Peter Parnell and Patrick Caddell, which rhymes and that’s cute. The teleplay is by Aaron Sorkin and the episode was directed by Laura Innes, whom you know as an actor from her work as Kerry Weaver in 249 episodes of ‘ER’ and all sorts of other things. HRISHI: Part of the John Wells family then. JOSH: That is true. I have a ‘Laura Innes Directs’ anecdote- HRISHI: From a later episode. JOSH: Yes. It’s not a spoiler of any kind, except that I’ll probably tell the story again two years from now when we get to it. HRISHI: Sure, let’s hear it. JOSH: ok. So she directed an episode that I acted in, seasons after this one, and she’s a very serious director and I’m a not very serious actor and so Laura came up to me to discuss a scene we were about to shoot and she had really thought it through, all the different beats and psychologically where the characters were at, and she kind of talked me through it and said “This is my take and I think what you’re thinking here is this and that sort of reflects on - remember what happened last season - and I think what you’re trying to accomplish here...” and this and that and she kinda gave a five minute spiel and then I said “So.. -

JOSH: And mine is Joshua Malina. This is a very special episode of Blossom, no, of The West Wing Weekly. We finally got to sit down with Martin Sheen and so we decided to celebrate. Let’s give him his own episode. The man deserves it. Hrishi and I were planning originally to pair our talk with Martin with our own conversation about the season opener “20 Hours in America” but then we decided to make an executive decision and give the president his own episode of the podcast. 38/ Pere Antoni Pons The everydayness of power The West Wing If the effect is the same as what happens with me, after seeing any average-quality chapter of The West Wing (1999-2006) the reader-spectator will think he or she is witnessing an incontrovertible landmark in the latest phase of audiovisual narrative. After viewing one of the more dazzling, memorable episodes, he or she will not hesitate to believe that this is to behold one of the major, most perfect intellectual and artistic events of the early twenty-first century, comparable —not only in creative virtuosity but also in meaning, magnitude and scope— with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, Shakespeare’s tragedies, Balzac’s The Human Comedy, or the complete recordings of Bob Dylan. Over the top? Even with more rotund words, it would be no exaggeration. Nowadays, nobody can ignore the fact that a colossal explosion in quality has happened over the last decade in the universe of American TV series. The old idea according to which the hapless professionals —scriptwriters, actors and directors— the ones who lack the luck or talent to carve out a niche in Hollywood or to triumph in the world of cinema, have to work in television has now been so thoroughly debunked that it even seems to have been turned on its head.
