Organizing for Effectiveness and Growth in Cooperative Financial Services a Focus on the Americas Foreword from the International Summit of Cooperatives
Financial Services ORGANIZING FOR EFFECTIVENESS AND GROWTH IN COOPERATIVE FINANCIAL SERVICES A FOCUS ON THE AMERICAS FOREWORD FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT OF COOPERATIVES We would like to thank Oliver Wyman for their focus on cooperative financial services in the Americas. This pioneering report complements three previous Oliver Wyman studies focused on of the European cooperative banking sector, and its publication is timely as international stakeholders seek to understand better the organizational challenges, dynamics, and opportunities this sector represents. In contrast with Europe, where cooperative banking has a significant market share (and in some countries is the majority of the banking industry), cooperatives in the Americas typically account for a smaller proportion of both deposits and loans, and are systemically less important than their shareholder counterparts. Nevertheless, across the Americas, cooperative banks and credit unions have a significant – and, this report argues, growing – role to play given the natural synergy of cooperative values, member service, and community development. We welcome the fact that the study challenges the conventional wisdom of growth and organizational effectiveness in the sector and seeks to identify practices that will enhance the relevance and sustainability of the cooperative model. Ultimately, we believe these will help to ensure broad access to the financial system by all. SUZANNE GENDRON STÉPHANE BERTRAND Managing Vice President Executive Director Cooperation and Corporate Affairs International Summit of Cooperatives Desjardins ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Oliver Wyman acknowledges the industry executives and other stakeholders who contributed their perspectives and served as a sounding board in helping formulate our hypotheses throughout this project. Their willingness to share their views is a testament to the collaborative nature of the cooperative movement. -

Barque from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Barque From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A barque, barc, or bark is a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts having the fore- and mainmasts rigged square and only the mizzen (the aftmost mast) rigged fore-and-aft. Contents 1 Etymology 2 Bark Three-masted barque (US Revenue Cutter Salmon P. 3 Barque rig Chase, 1878–1907) 4 Barques and barque shrines in Ancient Egypt 5 Barque of St. Peter 6 See also 7 References 8 Further reading Three-masted barque sail 9 External links plan Etymology The word barque entered English via French, which in turn came from the Latin barca by way of Occitan, Spanish or Italian. The Latin barca may stem from Celtic "barc" (per Thurneysen) or Greek "baris" (per Diez), a term for an Egyptian boat. The Oxford English Dictionary considers the latter improbable.[1] The word barc appears to have come from Celtic languages. The form adopted by English, perhaps from Irish, was bark, while that adopted by Latin as barca very early, which gave rise to the French barge and barque. In Latin, Spanish and Italian the term barca refers to a small boat, not a full-size ship. French influence in England led to the use in English of both words, although their meanings now are not the same. Well before the 19th century a barge had become interpreted as a small vessel of coastal or inland waters. Somewhat later, a bark became a sailing vessel of a distinctive rig as detailed below. In Britain, by the mid-19th century, the spelling had taken on the French form of barque. -

ocv S? PAPERS RELATING TO THE SHIPS AND VOYAGES OF THE COMPANY OF SCOTLAND TRADING TO AFRICA AND THE INDIES 1696-1707 Edited by GEORGE PRATT INSH, M.A., D.Litt. (Glasgow) RESEARCH FELLOW, GLASGOW UNIVERSITY PRINCIPAL LECTURER IN HISTORY, GLASGOW TRAINING CENTRE Printed at the University Press by T. and A. Constable Ltd. for the Scottish History Society 1924 Printed in Great Britain PREFACE This volume is a selection from the large amount of fresh manuscript material to which I have had access during my study of the activities of the Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies, commonly known as the Darien Company. Some of the papers, such as the correspondence of Sir Paul Rycaut, reveal in clear detail episodes known hitherto only in vague outline ; other documents, such as those dealing with the voyage of the Speedwell to the China Seas, throw light on enterprises not previously dealt with by historians of the Darien Company. In collecting this material I have received invaluable aid from several friends. Mr. J. J. Spencer has placed at my disposal his collection of Darien books, pamphlets, and manuscripts. Mr. Hugh Pillans of Edinburgh has given me the transcripts he had made of the Darien papers in the Archives of the Royal Bank. Mr. William Angus, Curator of the Historical Department of the Register House, and the staff of the Advocates’ Library have in every possible way facilitated my work among the manuscripts of which they have charge. To the Directors of the Royal Bank and to the Council of the Royal Society I am indebted for permission to use the Darien papers in their Archives. -

Mistletoes of North American Conifers
United States Department of Agriculture Mistletoes of North Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station American Conifers General Technical Report RMRS-GTR-98 September 2002 Canadian Forest Service Department of Natural Resources Canada Sanidad Forestal SEMARNAT Mexico Abstract _________________________________________________________ Geils, Brian W.; Cibrián Tovar, Jose; Moody, Benjamin, tech. coords. 2002. Mistletoes of North American Conifers. Gen. Tech. Rep. RMRS–GTR–98. Ogden, UT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station. 123 p. Mistletoes of the families Loranthaceae and Viscaceae are the most important vascular plant parasites of conifers in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Species of the genera Psittacanthus, Phoradendron, and Arceuthobium cause the greatest economic and ecological impacts. These shrubby, aerial parasites produce either showy or cryptic flowers; they are dispersed by birds or explosive fruits. Mistletoes are obligate parasites, dependent on their host for water, nutrients, and some or most of their carbohydrates. Pathogenic effects on the host include deformation of the infected stem, growth loss, increased susceptibility to other disease agents or insects, and reduced longevity. The presence of mistletoe plants, and the brooms and tree mortality caused by them, have significant ecological and economic effects in heavily infested forest stands and recreation areas. These effects may be either beneficial or detrimental depending on management objectives. Assessment concepts and procedures are available. Biological, chemical, and cultural control methods exist and are being developed to better manage mistletoe populations for resource protection and production. Keywords: leafy mistletoe, true mistletoe, dwarf mistletoe, forest pathology, life history, silviculture, forest management Technical Coordinators_______________________________ Brian W.
