The ballot measure will give the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Civilian Oversight Commission subpoena power to help fight deputy misconduct and corruption as well as force the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to first produce a study that looks at reducing the jail populations and redirecting the cost savings to alternatives to incarceration to reduce recidivism, prevent crime, and permanently lessen the population of people cycling into and out of jail that are experiencing mental health, drug dependency, or chronic homelessness issues before spending over $3.5 billion on building new jails. "We know that jails alone are not the answer,” said Senator Mitchell who represents a large swath of L.A. County including Culver City, Ladera Heights, and a large part of South L.A. Resolution in support of Adult Education Whereas, the LAUSD Superintendent, John Deasy, and the LAUSD school board are proposing the elimination of adult education in Los Angeles; Whereas, Adult Education is essential to the communities it serves; Whereas, Adult Education teaches basic skills and job training that are essential to working class communities; Whereas, Adult Education is teaching parents to help their children succeed in school; Whereas, the elimination of Adult Education will decrease opportunities for communities that need these educational services the most; Whereas, the elimination of Adult Education will make the recession worse especially in this economic climate; Now, therefore, be it resolved that the South Robertson Neighborhoods Council officially takes a position of support for Adult Education. Motion to support changing Venice Blvd. and surrounding streets into a parking meter zone Agenda Item: GB031512-6 Date: 15 March 2012 Proposed By: Doug Fitzsimmons Full Proposal The Expo line opens at Venice and National in spring of this year. Although the project includes a parking lot, nearby businesses and residents are concerned that overflow parking (and those looking to get around overnight parking restrictions) will flood the surrounding streets. At a public meeting to discuss the problem in late February, the community attendees were in vocal support of the establishment of a parking meter zone (PMZ) along Venice and adjacent streets. The Department of Transportation is ready to implement a PMZ with enough community support. The PMZ does not mandate meters, but makes their installation possible. Indeed, residents requested that the PMZ be extended to include residential streets south of the 10 Freeway, in the hope that this would help in the establishment of a Preferential Parking area (once that moratorium Doug Fitzsimmons President is lifted). A map is attached. Brian Kite Metering would likely be in effect from 8am-8pm with a two-hour maximum. Standard Vice-President $1/hour rates would apply. Demand Change. 2020 VOTER GUIDE The Council on American-Islamic Relations, California (CAIR-CA), is a chapter of the nation’s largest American Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. CAIR-CA’s mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. If there were ever a time to take heart in our collective strength, it would be now, as we look back on the year that just ended. In 2016, we were shocked by the deaths of 49 mostly LGBT, mostly young people of color in Orlando. We were shocked by the election of a presidential candidate who won the White House on a wave of racism, sexism, homo- and transphobia and fear of immigrants and Muslims. There is no question that we now face an unprecedented challenge to the civil rights that we have worked so hard over the past three decades to achieve. Yes, the challenges we face seem greater than ever. But our community and our state are prepared to meet them. In 2016, Equality California worked with California elected officials and allied organizations to pass eight new laws protecting LGBT civil rights. We saved lives by legalizing organ transplants between HIV-positive donors and HIV-positive recipients. We adopted a travel ban on business trips by California state employees to other states that pass new laws that target the LGBT community.

UCLA Office of Government & Community Relations OVERVIEW OF 2014 LA COUNTY, STATE, AND FEDERAL ELECTIONS Dear Colleagues: The November 4th General Election was important for our campus. With the retirements of Congressman Henry Waxman and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, UCLA will be represented by a new member of Congress for the first time since 1975 and a new Los Angeles County Supervisor for the first time in 20 years. Also, voters selected a new State Senator that will represent the 26th District and includes the entire UCLA campus. Additionally, there were many other important races throughout Los Angeles County. This document prepared by Government & Community Relations staff, summarizes the preliminary results from key races in Los Angeles County at the federal, state and local levels of government. The election results are current as of November 5th. The final results have not been certified at this time, with absentee and provisional ballots still being counted in some races. Further updates will be provided if there are significant changes. LA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESULTS Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors District 3: Sheila Kuehl was successfully elected (52.7%) defeating Bobby Shriver (47.2%). Her term will begin on December 1, 2014. UCLA Community and Local Government Relations co-hosted a candidate forum in September on campus for the two candidates. The third district covers the western part of Los Angeles County, including the UCLA campus, the Westside and the Santa Monica Mountains to the Ventura County line, the San Fernando Valley and east to Atwater Village. Sheila Kuehl (’62) served for eight years in the California State Senate and six years in the State Assembly.
