Anthony Crisp PEOPLE WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY IN SOCIETY AND IN THE CHURCH Theological reflections on the consequences of contemporary social welfare policies as seen through the lens of social capital theory ANTHONY GERARD CRISP ABSTRACT Jürgen Moltmann suggests that where liberal market welfare policies are introduced people with learning disabilities are disadvantaged, whereas Christian communities provide a more favourable environment. This hypothesis is investigated by assessing the social capital available to two groups of people with a learning disability. The members of one group are being supported to live independent lives as ‘citizen consumers.’ The second group are members of a Roman Catholic parish community supported by their families. The results suggest that both groups have few resources of bridging or linking capital. The second group have larger and richer resources of bonding capital which comes largely through family networks. They also had significant resources of spiritual capital but not religious capital. In the light of the results, a theological critique is undertaken of some aspects of contemporary social policy and consumer culture. A distinction is made between human relationships as transactions and as gifts. Insights from the theology of gift relationships are offered. The question is raised whether it is appropriate to consider gift relationships as a form of capital and Churches as a form of social capital. Liturgy is considered as a form of liberative praxis.     (Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context. In today’s world, LGBT issues are being discussed more than ever before…in the media, in community programs, in schools, churches, offices, in the streets, and in people’s homes. These discussions are often emotionally charged as this can be a threatening topic for many people, and clear information is often difficult to find. Being an ally is important, but it is challenging as well as exciting. This list is not exhaustive, but provides some starting points. Add your own ideas and suggestions! Don’t assume heterosexuality. We tend to assume that everyone we meet is heterosexual even though we know this is not true. Often people hide that they are LGBT until they know it is safe to “come out” in a given situation. Use neutral language when first working with students/clients/customers until you know for certain what the person prefers (for example, the gender of their significant other). Educate yourself about lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender issues. There are many resources, reading lists, and organizations available for information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Explore ways to creatively integrate LGBT issues in your work. Doing so can be a valuable process for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Integrating LGBT people and issues instead of separating them out as a “special topic” is an important strategy for conveying and creating respect and acceptance.

According to the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, universal design (sometimes also called inclusive design or barrier-free design) is the design and structure of an environment so that it can be understood, accessed, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age or ability. That means planning around peoples’ diverse needs and abilities (like kids, parents, seniors, people with injuries or illnesses, and people with disabilities) to create environments that actually meet those needs and abilities. In short, universal design is simple, useful, and accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Rather than everyone getting, “the same,” universal design incorporates the needs of diverse users. A familiar example of universal design is the curb cut, which provides wheelchair users, people with strollers, and workers using hand trucks better access to streets and curbs at differing levels. In order to facilitate people with differing abilities, of differing ages and sizes within society, systems must be designed with the user at the center of the design process. A universally designed environment makes life easier, safer, and more inclusive for everyone.
