Vol. 15, No. 2 (2014) Physico-chemical Parameters and Their Variations in Relation to Fish Production in Zhob River Balochistan Ghulam Dastagir1, Naeem Tariq Narejo2* and Shaista Jalbani2 1 Department of Zoology, University of Balochistan, Quetta 2Department of Fresh Water Biology and Fisheries, University of Sindh Jamshoro Received 10 September 2014, Revised 22 November 2014, Accepted 24 November 2014 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abstract The study of physico-chemical parameters of Zhob River was carried from January- December 2011 and correlated with fish production. The samples of fish were procured from, Zhob River Balochistan with the help of local fishermen. Total 557 (342 Schizothorax progestus, 105 Caratus auratus, 60 Tor tor and 50 Glypothorax sp.) were procured from January to December. Noticeable difference in the values of temperature, pH, transparency and DO were not observed throughout the year and as per standards for aquatic biota. The length- weight relationship values indicated positive allometric and regression co-efficients (b) are 2.67, 2.50, 2.17 and 2.65 termed as satisfactory growth in C. auratus, S. progestus, Tor tor and Glypothorax sp., respectively. The values of condition factor (Kn = 1.0, 1.01, 0.97 and 1.31) in case of C. auratus, S. progestus, Tor tor and Glypothorax sp.respectively from Zhob River, Balochistan. Condition factor values show fluctuations in all size groups in different fish species. It is concluded that the physico-chemical parameters of Zhob river Balochistan were found to be within the suitable ranges of fish culture. Shahid Shaukat, Muhammad Usama Zafar and Waqar Ahmad Department of Environmental Science, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology Gulshan-e-Iqbal Karachi, Pakistan Abstract: A study was conducted to assess the water quality of KeenjharLake and its canal leading to Dhabeji treatment and pumping plant. Fourteen samples were collected deterministically from various areas of the lake. Twenty-two water quality parameters were measured in all collected samples, including Turbidity, DO, TDS, chloride, alkalinity, hardness, nitrate, sulphate, six heavy metals and coliform bacteria. Most of the physicochemical parameters were within the WHO permissible limits. The water samples from Kotri and Dhabeji (before pumping station) were of poor quality characterized by the levels of Pb, Cd, Cu and nitrate that exceeded the WHO permissible limits. The rapid change in global climate has given rise to many disasters that pose a severe threat to the human life, property and infrastructure. Disasters like floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, sediment disasters, avalanches, GLOFs, and cyclones with storm surges are some prominent manifestations of climate change phenomenon. Pakistan, which is ranked in the top ten countries that are the most vulnerable to climate change effects, started planning to safeguard and secure the life, land and property of its people in particular the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized. However, recurring disasters since 2005 have provided the required stimuli for accelerating the efforts towards capacity building of the responsible agencies, which include federal, provincial, district governments, community organizations, NGOs and individuals. Prior to 2005, the West Pakistan National Calamities Act of 1958 was the available legal remedy that regulated the maintenance and restoration of order in areas affected by calamities and relief against such calamities. -

The release of untreated wastewater from Kotri industrial area and other sources have made the lake water polluted. This study was subjected to determine the impact of such pollutant sources on the water quality of Keenjhar Lake. The study involves analysis of water quality parameters of Keenjhar Lake and its feeding source (KB Feeder). The sampling sites were selected based on the sources of con- tamination. The water samples are tested for physical, chemical and micro biological parameters. The result of water analysis indicates the contamination level of lake is quite alarming for the sites of Kotri effluent and WAPDA colony where total dissolved solids, chlorides and other ionic metals were quite higher in concentration than other sites. These sites are also contaminated with fluo- ride and arsenic which are carcinogenic elements. The study reveals that the contamination level of feeding source is causing a big non-reversible damage to the lake if continued to be uncontrolled. -
