Since the second half of the 19th century, Putney has been one of the most significant centres for rowing in the UK, and is home to more than 20 rowing clubs based on the River Thames at Putney Embankment. Each year, more than 250,000 spectators gather here to watch the start of the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, which has had Putney as its starting point since 1845.
Putney’s bustling commercial centre is anchored by the Exchange Shopping Centre, which is home to more than 40 shops, whilst the high street features a mix of national chains and independents stores.

WHAT’S A BID? A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined area within which businesses decide on priority actions and contribute funds to deliver them. BIDs have proved to be key in helping town centres evolve and thrive. Many BIDs are already in places across south west London, and others are emerging, with over 50 in London alone.
A five-year business plan to improve the town’s performance is developed with businesses, who then vote on whether to take the plan forwards. If a majority of businesses vote “yes”, all businesses above a set threshold pay a levy to fund the activities, usually around 1-2% of their premises’ rateable value (that’s £5-£10 per week for the majority of businesses). The BID is managed by a company formed from and led by levy-paying businesses.

In 2016, technology giant Apple confirmed that the iconic power station will house its new London campus in 2021. The firm will become the largest office tenant at the former electricity generator, with 1,400 staff across six floors in the central boiler house.
The successful regeneration of Battersea Power Station will create 20,000 new jobs, inject £20bn into the UK economy and help to fund the Northern Line extension, the first new Underground line since the Millennium.
