Colin Nye Honorary President Bluelight CC said ‘ The club has been created to support all blue light workers, partner agencies and the armed forces to attain the physical and mental health be- nefits from cycling. The last year has placed an enormous strain on our communities and we sincerely believe this is an opportunity to help our colleagues. They will also benefit from exclusive benefits that no other cycling club can offer.’ Chief Superintendent Roy Smith Metropolitan Police said ‘The work undertaken by the emer- gency services and partners like the armed forces is unlike other vocations and sometimes see!s our colleagues subjected to repeated trauma. Having a community built around a shared interest like cycling is an excellent way to decompress in a safe space. I am delighted to be able to sup- port this initiative in a small way and wish all those involved the very best of luck”. Background In 2019 Colin Nye and two colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) originally arranged a charity cycle ride from London2Paris for June 2020 in aid of COPS (Care of Police Survivors.) Partner businesses supported this venture by providing support and discounts to the original riders. This included Endurance Zone, WKG Sports, iPro hydration and Grand Tour Coffee. This event was cancelled along with the subsequent ride in 2021 due to travel restrictions. Imposed in response to the COVID19 pandemic. But that was not the en, interest in emergency services cycling grew on Twitter and various other platforms. This led to a variety of emergency workers from different agencies meeting virtually on Zoom in March 2021 and the vision of the Bluelight Cycling Club was realised. The club, which is a not for profit community interest company, will support five charities, each on linked to the relevant emergency services. Member Benefits On May 4 this club will officially launch its website and club kit along with the benefits scheme supported by David Birch from Endurance Zone. The club has also teamed up with Wahoo Fitness, an international indoor bike trainer and ac- cessories company As a member you will have access to hundreds of exclusive discounts with some of sports biggest brands. Nike, Adidas, Muc-Off, Giant, SIS, Cyclist Magazine, Cycling Weekly, Le Col, Grand Tour Coffee, Audible, Reebok, Pelotan, Velo Skin, Bum Butter, RGT, Rouvy, Fulgaz the list goes on. We have also secured free unlimited group rides on RGT with no additional costs to our members. Members will also be put into a ballot to enter any Velo29 event free of charge plus further partner events through out the year. Money saved and exercise combined, what could be better! • THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..The Missing Links………………And More(Useless Information)
THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..the missing links………………and more(useless information). In this historic year of the 2014 TdF Grand Depart taking place right here in the North of England, The Tootler has collected together a few interesting facts associating our great club with the worlds greatest bike race and some of the heroic riders who make the connection; roughly, possibly.Admittedly they are loose connections but there are worse things than being loosely connected so taking the advice of Ernest Hemingway to “write drunk, edit sober”, in this late night conceived and rambling compilation Tootler will attempt to connect Houghton CC, the late great Chis, the Vaux Grand Prix road race and the Tour de France. Firstly some relevant background information. For the benefit of recent members (and those under sixty five) the great Chis was a Houghton grammar school boy called Peter Chisman who joined the club in 1954 and who, apart from a wonderful career as an amateur and a professional also inspired hundreds of kids to take up bike racing. In the north east, at least in bike racing terms, the ninteen sixties and seventies were the belle epoque, the beautiful era, a golden time. Friday night at the clubrooms would be packed. There was a separate time trial and road racing notice board. The time trialling notices, race details and start times would be displayed on the RTTC notice board; and the BCF notice board would detail all road races, entrants, times, meeting points etc for those members racing on the road that weekend.

Quinton Motor Club Ltd Forewo rd This publication is the result of over two years of investigative research and subsequent communication with many past members of Quinton Motor Club. No formal record of the Club ’s history or its activities existed before this task was under taken. I would particularly like to acknowledge the involvement of the following: Mike & Hilary Stratton , who were the driving force behind the w hole project and have spent countless hours in research and communication with past members , far and wide, a s well as many long journeys from their home in Devon to meet with the rest of us in the Midlands. The other members of the organising committee for the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for their hospitality at meetings, contribution of ideas, research fo r memorabilia , general good humour and enthusiasm that this milestone should be fittingly celebrated (in alphabetical order): Ray Barlow, Susan Butcher, Mike Harris, Nick Jones & Graham Towns hend. This publication has only been made possible by people tur ning out cupboards, garages and lofts to unearth long forgotten gems regarding the Club and its history. Foremost in this is Mike Adams, who has been the major source of information in that he has not thrown ANYTHING away sinc e he joined the Club in the mi d -1970s. Three big cardboard boxes arrived at my house one day in the early Spring of 2008, Ginny was not hap py when they were returned just over a year later, she thought she had seen the last of them..!! Others, not on the organising committee, that h ave unearthed memorabilia are (in alphabetical order): Peter Bayliss, John Davi s, Steve Eagle, Peter Gray , Neil Henderson and finally Dave Bullock who attended the first meeting of the Club and whose recollections of the early years has enabled me to piece together the scant infor mation that still exists from fifty years ago..!! We all hope you enjoy this publication and that its contents makes you smile and brings back happy memories of your time in Quinton Motor Club .

  • This Is Not Just the History of a Cycling Club
A CENTURY AWHEEL 1889-1989 A HISTORY OF THE DE LAUNE CYCLING CLUB WRITTEN BY MIKE RABBETTS This is not just the history of a cycling club. The fortunes of the De Laune C.C. over the past hundred years mirror the dramatic changes in the social life of Britain which have taken place in that time; and the collection of letters its members sent from the trenches of the First World War forms a uniquely personal record of their horrific - and light-hearted - experiences. The De Laune takes its name from a Kent landowner and philanthropist of the nineteenth century. It was formed as a strictly all-male club in 1889 when the Victorian cycling boom was getting under way - on roads that could be identified by their dust, and at the Herne Hill track, where quads, triplets and tandems rattled the boards. The De Laune survived police raids on its racing men (and the Great Grape-throwing Scandal of 1903) to tour, race and dance its way through the 'twenties and 'thirties. After the Second World War it played a major part in a nationwide cycling revival, mainly through the efforts of E. N. Chippendale - the "Chip" to whom this book is dedicated. World-class riders like the international star Alan Jackson put the De Laune in the top rank; and pranksters like Jackson staged mud-battles on the river and hid bikes and pyjamas in trees. From the "penny-farthing" races and garden parties of the 1890s to the discos and women's road races of the 1980s, the social historian and general reader - as well as the cycling enthusiast - will find much of interest here.

Message from our Sponsor Castrol Ltd . It gives Castrol great pleasure to continue sponsorship of Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club's National Rally in 1980. Castrol's close association with the Club began over ten years ago and we are delighted that their principal event has risen in stature over this period to become what is generally regarded as Britain's Premier National Rally. Recently the event has become well known for attracting overseas stars and this year is again no exception as the top ten contains many of the world's leading drivers. We extend an especially warm welcome to these overseas visitors who will be familiarising themselves with classic Welsh forest conditions prior to the Lombard RAC Rally. It is also the final round of the Castrol/ 'Autosport' National Championship so a close fight for all important final points will be a major feature of an exciting day's sport. We wish all competitors, officials and spectators alike a very successful and enjoyable Castrol National Rally and thank them for their continued support. Vic Sallows, Sales Manager Castrol Limited. The return of peace has brought back to College life a game which inspires among its adherents a devotion unequalled even by that of the enthusiasts who daily send their flimsy aircraft soaring to destruc- tion in the many roofs and trees which abound in and around our august seat of learning. We refer, of course, to golf. Who but a golfer can discourse about his sport with such a wealth of technical verbiage, and pursue it so wholeheartedly that he deems no room too small in which to swing a club, and no hour of the day too early or too late for practice? Who but a golfer would cling so tenaciously to such habits as that of pedalling furiously up the Hun- dred on his long-sufiering steed five minutes after the beginning of Prep., with his tell-tale bag on his back, hoping against hope to be unobserved? Not the tennis player, nor the cricketer, who are de- terred by such a trifle as a shower of rain; nor is it the cyclist, who hopes for nothing more than that his battered old wreck will at least hold together till the end of term, and certainly none of these in their capacity as members of the J.T.C., as they wearily set to work with bianco and polish to prepare for yet another inspection.
