LAUNCH OF UK’S FIRST EVER EMERGENCY SERVICES CYCLING CLUB

The launch of the ’s first ever cycling club to support emergency service workers and armed forces was held at New Scotland Yard, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, London SW1A 2JL on Tuesday 4 May 2021 10.00am.

Colin Nye Honorary President Bluelight CC said ‘ The club has been created to support all blue light workers, partner agencies and the armed forces to attain the physical and mental health be- nefits from cycling.

The last year has placed an enormous strain on our communities and we sincerely believe this is an opportunity to help our colleagues. They will also benefit from exclusive benefits that no other cycling club can offer.’

Chief Superintendent Roy Smith Metropolitan Police said ‘The work undertaken by the emer- gency services and partners like the armed forces is unlike other vocations and sometimes see!s our colleagues subjected to repeated trauma. Having a community built around a shared interest like cycling is an excellent way to decompress in a safe space. I am delighted to be able to sup- port this initiative in a small way and wish all those involved the very best of luck”. Background

In 2019 Colin Nye and two colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) originally arranged a charity cycle ride from London2Paris for June 2020 in aid of COPS (Care of Police Survivors.)

Partner businesses supported this venture by providing support and discounts to the original riders. This included Endurance Zone, WKG Sports, iPro hydration and Grand Tour Coffee. This event was cancelled along with the subsequent ride in 2021 due to travel restrictions. Imposed in response to the COVID19 pandemic.

But that was not the en, interest in emergency services cycling grew on Twitter and various other platforms. This led to a variety of emergency workers from different agencies meeting virtually on Zoom in March 2021 and the vision of the Bluelight Cycling Club was realised.

The club, which is a not for profit community interest company, will support five charities, each on linked to the relevant emergency services.

Paul Mcclenaghan Borough Commander LFB Havering

'I am supporting The Blue Light Cycling club because after the last few years we have had as respon- ders and always there helping people it!s a chance for my blue light light responders and military col- leagues and I to unwind. It will help with mental stresses that we all face and even give a chance to loose a bit of weight!! You don!t have to be a professional cyclist, it is for all levels and that!s what I love about it, and the opportunities the BLCC is going to give its members will bet excellent.’ Roy Smith Chief Supt. ‘Over the last year the nation has once again turned to our wonderful blue light heroes to keep us safe. As an ordinary member of public I am forever in awe of the courageous and selfless work delivered by the emergency services, tales of heroism up and down the country, day in and day out. I am supporting the Bluelight Cycling Club as I wholeheartedly believe using sport as a vehicle, the club can create a much needed space for wellbeing and peer support, as well as access to opportunity and initiatives” David Birch Endurance Zone founder

Sharron Davies MBE

‘I am showing my support to our brilliant emergency services and armed forces as we all need them at different times in our lives and in those times we are so very grateful. Both the Emergency services and armed forces have continued to work tirelessly through these very difficult and unprecedented times and we should all be extremely grateful for what they have done over the past year.

I!m also supporting this club as my family and I love our cycling and are all avid cyclists. I hope to be able to ride at some of the events and it will be my pleasure for my family and I to be able to meet so many of the members.’ OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNERS

Care of Police Survivors (COPS) Care of Police Survivors (COPS) is a charity that supports the families of police officers and staff who have lost their lives on duty. COPS provides peer support opportunities and access to counselling services to help surviving family members (#survivors!) rebuild their shattered lives of Police Officers who have been killed in the line of duty. We provide practical and emotional support ensuring survivors have the help they need to cope with such a tragedy, and that they remain part of the police family as they rebuild their lives.

The Fire Fighters Charity The Fire Fighters Charity offers specialist, lifelong support for members of the UK fire services community, empowering individuals to achieve mental, physical, and social wellbeing throughout their lives. We provide confidential, personalised support to the whole of the fire services community, delivering mental health, physical health, and social wellbeing services at our centres, remotely, online, and in communities around the UK. Championing the health and wellbeing of all those we support – serving, retired or dependant – we aim to ensure that our beneficiaries can live well, for life. And they!re not all firefighters. We exist to support all fire and rescue service personnel, whatever their role in the service. We are also here for all those who have retired, as well as for spouses and qualifying dependents.

Help for Heroes Help for Heroes believes those who serve our country deserve support when they!re wounded. Every day, men and women have to leave their careers in the Armed Forces as a result of physical or psy- chological wounds; their lives changed forever.

The Charity helps them, and those still serving, to recover and get on with their lives by providing physical, psychological, financial, and welfare support for as long as they need it. It also supports their families, be- cause they too can be affected by their loved one!s wounds. Help for Heroes receives almost no funding from the Government, which means it relies on the spirit and generosity of the great British public, its partners, and volunteers to keep going. It has already supported more than 26,500 people and won!t stop until every wounded veteran gets the support they deserve.

NHS Charities Together NHS Charities Together is the national charity caring for the NHS. Through our member charities, we fund projects that improve services for patients and we help NHS staff and volunteers both practically and emotionally so that they can continue with their vital life-saving work. We believe our collective mission is more important than ever as the NHS faces the most challenging time in its history. And we have been overwhelmed by the heartfelt support from across the nation to get behind the NHS during this critical time. A huge thank you to our amazing supporters – your help is making a huge difference to NHS staff, volun- teers, and patients.
