Recommendations for Moscow by Lighthouse Main sights KREMLIN Moscow's most famous political and historical landmark. The Kremlin is a walled-in complex of cathedrals, palaces and government offices, with several buildings open to the public, including the Armoury, Patriarch's Palace and the State Kremlin Palace. RED SQUARE The Red Square is the heart and soul of Russia, rich in symbols of its turbulent and intriguing past. Stroll over the square, visit the Lenin Mausoleum and make sure to pass through the shopping mall “GUM” for their famous ice-cream. ST BASILS CATHEDRAL The cathedral (see picture on the left), with its bright colours and onion shaped domes, is one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world. CHRIST THE SAVIOUR CATHEDRAL Located on the northern bank of the Moskva River, the Christ the Saviour Cathedral as the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world. NOVODEVICHI CONVENT Founded in the 16th century, Novodevichi convent is the only ancient nunnery which served as a fortress at the same time. The convent provides an example of the highest accomplishments of Russian architecture with rich interiors and an important collection of paintings and artefacts. PARK POBEDIY Victory Park is an open-air museum about the Second World War (the Great Patriotic War is Russian) on Poklonnaya hill, known for its aspiring obelisk (+140 meters high). While simply walking around the park you'll be amazed to see a lot of tanks, cannons, jets and other weapons from different countries that took part in the war. There are four memorial temples: Georgiy Pobedonocez Church (Saint George Church), Memorial mosque, Synagogue, Catholic Chapel which were all built to remember war victims. Popular neighbourhoods PATRIARCH’S PONDS This green space in central Moscow is great for people-watching and an ideal spot for some rest and relaxation. The park’s pond also serves as an ice rink in the winter and is home to swans in the summer. CHISTYE PRUDY (CLEAN PONDS) Clean Ponds is a lovely little pond that graces the Boulevard Ring. The paddle boats in summer and ice skating in winter are essential parts of the ambience and make it a popular hang-out. Ironically, the ponds used to be very filthy as the sewage from nearby areas was dumped there, particularly from butcher's rows located in the vicinity. In the 17th century, however, the ponds were ordered to clean. Since then, the area has become one of the most favorite places to stroll for many Muscovites. BOLSHAYA NIKITSKAYA STREET Bolshaya Nikitskaya is a street in the heart of Moscow, parallel to Tverskaya street and Vozdvizhenka passing into Novy Arbat. Not only does it have a lot of quaint restaurants and shops, but it also has a rich history dating back to the 16th century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolshaya_Nikitskaya_Street). KUZNETSKIY MOST AREA In downtown Moscow, located between Tverskaya Street and Kitay Gorod, you find the small area Kuznetskiy Most. In Soviet times, many buildings were used by the Government and the area became quite boring. But in the beginning of the 90s, a revival took place and currently it is known for its nice restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs. An important landmark of the area is that it is home to the Federal Security Bureau (former KGB). KITAY GOROD Kitay Gorod is one of Moscow’s oldest areas, emerging in the 14th century when the Kremlin expanded. While translating to China Town in Russian, there has never been a Chinese settlement here. Instead, the name likely stems from the word Citta, meaning fortification, as the walls of Kitay Gorod protected the city from unwanted visitors.
