About WrdeUp

Starting as a celebration for the Junior Football Club (HTJFC) when winning the South West Community club of the year award, WrdeUp is actually five years old this year.

Our first event in 2013 culminated with a Take That Tribute act headlining. This proved very popular and many people asked if it could be done again, so in 2014 a new festival “Higworts” took place with Kingsland Road from X-Factor as the headliners with an ABBA tribute act as support.

Again with great weather and atmosphere at the 2014 event, it was suggested we should go again in 2015 and with a rebranding to “WrdeUp” (which will hopefully become Highworth’s very own music festival) we showcased both local acts, a tribute act who brought the music of alive and our headliners Dr and The Medics.

We have raised money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, HTJFC, Severn Freewheelers and a number of local good causes, with acts such as The Great Pretender (Queen tribute), Dave Finnegan's Commitments and Los Palmas 6 (Madness Tribute)

So why call it “Wrde Up”? Well Wrde was the very first recorded name for Highworth in 1086 and stayed until 1094 when it changed to Wortha. It then changed to Worde in 1155 for 3 years until Wurda, Wrda, Worthe and Wurthe were used from 1158 until 1241. 1241 brought about the first name similar to today which was Hauteworth.

WrdeUp is a not for profit organisation and relies heavily on the support of the local community for funding via ticket sales and local business for sponsorship.

As we move forward we aim for the Festival to continue to be a fun day for all the family giving local artists a chance to perform whilst at the same time giving a local organisations and charities opportunity to promote themselves and raise funds to help them develop and help others.

WrdeUp is a Community Interest Company (CIC) which is a type of company, designed in particular for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good. Our objectives are very simple, to create a fun family day out for the residents of Highworth and the community from the surrounding areas. Whilst helping our community develop and encouraging local performing arts, we also aim to give financial aid to local charities by providing a fund pot that can be applied for by 30th September each year.

Whether a group or a individual, please contact the WrdeUp Organisation at www.wrdeup.org.uk/contact for more information and an application form.

The Secret Police Are the Worlds longest running and most respected Police tribute band. In early 1996, guitarist Michael Findlay and his brother, drummer Cameron, were touring in a band called Bold as Love playing all the great music of Jimi Hendrix. Mike & Cam had always loved the music of The Police and decided it would be great to start a new band covering the material as at the time there was no-one covering the Police. They needed someone who could play bass and sing like Sting however. John Green was playing bass in an Oxfordshire band at the time and like Mike & Cam, John loved the music of The Police. An audition was set-up which happened in the back room of a pub in Stroud, June 1996. It worked, the songs sounded great and there was an instant chemistry between the three men. They rehearsed for the rest of June/July and after warm up gigs in local pubs booked their first show for August 1996. This took place at the famous Grand Theatre in Clapham. The house was full with 1800 people for an 80’s theme night and their reaction to The Secret Police was fantastic. The band has since appeared at venues throughout the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Playing at universities, music festivals, private parties, birthdays, weddings and corporate events. The band plays all the greatest hits of The Police like no other - with incredible power and intensity. The authenticity of the sound is beyond question and the performance goes way beyond just sounding like The Police. The band has passed close scrutiny by Outlandos - the official Sting and The Police Fan Club. In April 2003, Police and Sting fans were in London to see Sting appearing at The Royal Albert Hall. The Fan Club arranged a special show by The Secret Police for fan club members at Dingwalls, the famous Camden Town venue where The Police played in 1977. This most critical audience agreed that the gig was as close as it gets to the real thing. Praise indeed, from the very people best placed to judge just how good The Secret Police are. Young Vintage A four-piece young band who put a modern swing beat to both old classics and modern up to date songs but always with their own twist. An example of some classics are Ain't nobody and dancing in the moonlight and modern songs that are well received are Sorry and Seven Nation Army, these are just a few but there are always many surprises to their set of songs at every gig. Now let’s describe the band; Charlie-Anne is on lead vocals and plays acoustic guitar, with a voice that is quirky and very recognisable as hers. Jason Keen is the drummer, a strong character that has played drums for many years. The lead guitarist is Leo Phipps who is a great guitarist that is always learning new songs and willing to jump in and play all the many different styles and rhythms that are asked for. Then we have Jacob Smith, a typical bass player cool and laid back but very talented. The band are very popular in and around Wiltshire because they do have a great unique sound, playing pubs, clubs and festivals they have had great reviews and publicity.

Our repertoire comprises some well-known traditional tunes, a few obscure gems and a number of more modern songs from the 4 corners of the UK with few thrown in from America for good measure. We have songs of murder, love, debauchery, death, insanity, camels and heart break – there is something here for everyone! The band has evolved over a number of years with the current line-up coming together in early 2017. Bob Shaw (Guitar, Mandolin and Vocal) and Phil Heasman (Box drum and Bowler hat) from the original line-up were joined by Joe Rendall (Guitar and Vocals) and Mike Rendall (Bass).
