West Central Florida Regional Long Range Transportation Plan 2045 Planning for Tomorrow ampa Bay is growing up. Already among the top 20 most populated regions in the country, the Tampa Bay area is also one of the fastest growing. Visit any part ofT the region and you’ll experience growth firsthand. Construction is booming in St. Petersburg, Wesley Chapel, Bradenton, and many other areas. We feel it every day as traffic congestion worsens and commutes get longer. Add another one million people to the area over the next 20 years and it’s easy to see why we need a sustainable plan. The transportation investment decisions we make today will have a direct impact on the future safety, prosperity, health, and happiness of our region’s residents, businesses, and visitors. Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Transportation Planning Organizations (TPOs) are councils of local governments and transportation agencies that come together to plan, prioritize and fund the improvements that will shape our shared future. If you live in an urbanized area in the U.S., there is an MPO or TPO that serves you and your municipality. Because transportation doesn’t stop at county lines, the MPOs and TPOs of West Central Florida, each of which represent hundreds of thousands of citizens from Brooksville to Sarasota and Clearwater to Winter Haven, meet regularly to coordinate plans and priorities. Known as the MPO Chairs Coordinating Committee (CCC), the chairpersons of these MPOs and TPOs convene two to four times per year, and their support staff coordinates even more often. This Regional Long Range Transportation Plan is one of the CCC’s key work products.

EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA RIP CURRENT PROGRAM Randy L. Lascody National Weather Service, Melbourne, FL Published in National Weather Digest,Volume 22 Number 2 (June 1998), p. 25-30 ABSTRACT A rip current is a complex meteorological/oceanographic phenomenon that poses significant danger to beach goers worldwide. Rip currents are narrow channels of water flowing out past the surf zone that can pull even strong swimmers into deep water beyond the offshore sand bar. In Florida, rip current-related drownings averaged 21 per year during the period 1989-97. East central Florida averaged 4-5 rip current-related drownings per year during this period. An examination of east central Florida rip current data showed that large numbers of rescues occurred most often when long period ocean swells were impacting the beaches. This was in contrast to a study by Lushine (1991) which found that rip currents along the southeast Florida coast were mainly due to moderate onshore winds. The empirical forecasting technique developed by Lushine (LURCS) was adapted for use in east central Florida (ECFL LURCS). Available rip current data was used to calculate the Probability of Detection (POD), which is the percentage of events that are detected, and the False Alarm Ration (FAR), which is the percentage of unverified warnings/forecasts. For events with a greater than normal number of rip current rescues, the POD was found to be slightly better than the 1994 national average POD for severe weather (Crowther and Halmstad 1995). A high FAR showed the need to further improve ECFL LURCS and become aggressive in verification.

Yates (U.S. Geological Survey–St. Petersburg, Florida) TAMPA BAY HAS AN UNUSUAL geologic history when compared to many other estuaries in the eastern U.S. (Brooks and Doyle, 1998; Hine and others, 2009). It lies near the center of the carbonate Florida Platform (fig. 3–1), and is associated with a buried “shelf valley system” (including a paleo-channel feature located beneath the modern Egmont Channel) that formed in the early Miocene, about 20 million years ago (Ma) (Hine, 1997; Donahue and others, 2003; Duncan and others, 2003). Since that time the area has been subject to substantial fluctuations in sea level and alternating periods of sediment deposition and removal. These events have produced a complex distribution of siliciclastic and carbonate-based sediments within the bay, its associated barrier islands, and the inner Florida shelf (Brooks and Doyle, 1998; Brooks and others, 2003; Duncan and others, 2003; Ferguson and Davis, 2003). Sinkholes and other karst features in the underlying carbonate strata, which are common throughout the west-central Florida region, have been important factors underlying the development of both Tampa Bay (Brooks and Doyle, 1998; Donahue and others, 2003) and Charlotte Harbor, a geologically similar estuary located about 100 mi to the south (Hine and others, 2009). In the case of Tampa Bay, the underlying shelf valley system consists of multiple karst controlled subbasins (separated by bedrock highs) that have been filled by sediments, some of which were deposited fluvially (Hine and others, 2009).

University of Central Florida/HCA Healthcare Announce New Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program A new Vascular Surgery fellowship program, based at the Orlando VA Medical Center and Osceola Regional Medical Center, has received initial accreditation and is seeking immediate applicants to begin training in 2021. The program is part of a UCF-HCA Healthcare consortium that is building residency programs across Central and North Central Florida. The consortium now has 28 accredited residency and fellowship programs, and vascular surgery is the third fellowship based in the greater Orlando area. UCF and HCA Healthcare together with the Orlando VA Healthcare System will be training more than 480 residents and fellows in greater Orlando, Gainesville and Ocala by July to help alleviate the state’s physician shortage. Vascular Surgery is two-year fellowship program and applicants will need to have completed five years of surgery training in an approved residency program by July 1, 2021. Applications should be submitted through ERAS for both 2021 and 2022 start dates. The program will accept one fellow a year for a total of 2 accredited positions. Frederick Fisher, MD, will serve as the fellowship director. Dr. Fisher trained in General and Vascular Surgery at New York University Medical Center. He has served as Lead Vascular Surgeon at the Orlando VA since 2013. “We are proud to serve the vascular surgical needs of the Orlando Veteran community,” said Dr. Fisher, who joined the VA to build the fellowship program. The Orlando VA Medical Center is the primary site of fellow’s training and serves more than 118,000 veterans in Central Florida.
