Phase 1 : - Until the end of the Cold War in 1989, India was involved in exploring and enhancing its diplomatic influence as a moderating force in easing armed conflicts in Asia and Africa by disentangling them from the superpower rivalry between USA and USSR. Also, we learnt the hard way that the UN could not be relied upon to impartially resolve vital security disputes such as Jammu and Kashmir. India, thus, utilised the UN only to focus on common causes such as anticolonialism, anti racism, nuclear disarmament, environment conservation and equitable economic development. - Humbling of India in the 1962 border war against China meant a definitive redesign of the country’s diplomatic style to privilege bilateral contacts over the third party role by the UN. 2. Phase 2 : The 90s decade - Sudden end of the Cold War, the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1990 and the resultant emergence of the United States as the unrivaled power in world politics changed global dynamics. - Uncertain political climate caused by unstable coalition governments along with the balance of payments crisis constrained India's capability to be active in various bodies, especially in the Security Council (UNSC) and the General Assembly. - India showed pragmatism in enabling the toughest terms on Iraq even after eviction from occupied Kuwait, or in reversing the hitherto stated position on Zionism as racism.

  • INS Kavaratti
INS Kavaratti drishtiias.com/printpdf/ins-kavaratti Why in News Recently, INS Kavaratti has been formally inducted into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Visakhapatnam. Key Points It is named after the capital of the Lakshadweep group of islands. It is the last of the four indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvettes built under Project 28 (Kamorta class), by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. The ship is regarded as one of the most potent ASW stealth corvettes to have been constructed in India as it joins three other ships of the same class INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt and INS Kiltan, at the ENC. Its induction is a game-changer in the eastern seaboard, especially with the Chinese submarines trying to increase their presence in the Indian Ocean. It has enhanced stealth features resulting in reduced Radar Cross Section (RCS) achieved by the superstructure along with optimally sloped surfaces. INS Kavaratti and INS Kiltan are the first two major warships in the country to have the unique feature of the superstructure made of carbon fibre composite material. It has high indigenous content with the state-of-the-art equipment and systems to fight in Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare conditions. Some of the major equipment/ systems developed indigenously include Combat Management System, Torpedo Tube Launchers and Infra- Red Signature Suppression System, etc. The high level of indigenisation incorporated in the production accentuates the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative. 1/2 The ship is the reincarnation of the erstwhile Arnala Class missile corvette of the same name, INS Kavaratti-P 80, a ship that played an important role in the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.

  • Types of Warships.Docx
Type of Warship A warship is a naval ship built primarily for naval warfare. They usually belong to the Navy of a country. They are different from merchant ships as warships typically carry only weapons, ammunition and supplies for their crews, while the former is not armed and carries supplies necessary for trade and commerce. This article will give a brief history of warships before elaborating upon the types of warships available in the 21st century. The information from this article will be useful in the upcoming IAS Exam (GS 3). Brief History of Warships The ancestors of today's warships can be the galleys and triremes of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Being narrow and long, they were manned by oarsmen (always consisting of slaves and prisoners of war) who engaged in ramming, which would enable boarding action. Development of on-ship artillery lent a new dimension to ancient naval warfare, where coastal cities/towns could be besieged with them. Gradually, ramming fell out of fashion and boarding was still in use until the late 14th century. The development of cannons made ships much heavier to be moved by oars alone, hence warships began to rely on sails. Sails in fact made them more manoeuvrable and, with the canons onboard, could shoot down boarding parties at distance. By the middle of the 17th century, warships were carrying increasing numbers of cannon on their broadsides and tactics evolved to bring each ship's firepower to bear in a line of battle The development of these ships soon enabled European colonialism and eventual domination of the major oceans by them.
